National Youth Leadership Forum on Law

Not to be confused with the National Student Leadership Forum...

An invite came in the mail today. My friend's sister participated last year and says it's not scam but didn't elaborate so if anyone has any stories to tell, merci beaucoup. At $1200+, is this program prestigious or just a "filler" for college apps. I would like to go if it's an enriching experience (planned major is International Relations), not b/c of the latter.

filler...prestigious would be RSI or TASP. If you have to pay for a program, it diminishes the value. RSI = free

from what i heard those things are pretty crappy. they really just lecture. for peopel in california i would recomend cosmos.

what do you mean by cosmos?

COSMOS is a summer program. if you're in CA, why don't you do the "Center for Clinical Immunology at Stanford (CCIS)" summer research internship. Stanford pays you 1.5K, and it looks awesome on resume. It is extremely hard to get into; only open to CA residents, statewide. They choose 20 interns from a pool of around 200 applications.

I got into both CCIS and RSI, unfortunately, had to turn down CCIS for RSI!

cosmos is run by the ucs where you spen 3 weeks at a college and do certian things related to whatever subject you want.

I went to a NYLF on Tech two summers ago. I don't know if it's much different than Law, but most of the ten days were all lectures from rich people. However, I did gain some sense of leadership because we all had to do a project that was presented to Tech moguls. The Tech forum cost me $2000+ for ten days, but I guess it's a pretty prestigious opportunity.

heheh i went to the NYLF Tech in San Jose two summers ago too. Or was it this year? no it was two summers ago.

total S-C-A-M

These kinds of programs are not scams unless you're only there because it's prestigious or for a filler. You get to meet and have fun with many people from all over the country regardless of the city you're going to. I went to NSLC this past July.

Many people get them. All the juniors in my 6th period got one, and more than half got it in my 5th (that makes 20 or so). Selective, my @$$.

I've gotten so many of those forums/conference things... they could be enlightening, but virtually anyone with a decent (165 or higher, I'm guessing) PSAT score could go.
