Does anyone know anything about the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine? I got a fairly large invitation package from them a couple days ago. It is a ten day long program and it costs around $2,500, which seems really quite ridiculous and not very prestigious. Is it a legitimate, good program? Has anyone ever attended?

i don’t know. doesn’t everyone get those. the price turned me off back when I got them (i’m a hs senior now). I’d go with something legit like SAMS at CMU

Yeah…it’s pretty pricey. My only problem is that I can’t afford to spend 6 weeks at something like SAMS this summer simply because I don’t have the time.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on the Forum on Medicine?

My son did NYLF-Med in Chicago and really enjoyed it. He wants to go to Marquette, and it gave him a chance to meet people from the Midwest. We’re from New Orleans.

It did cost a lot. You not only add the tuition, but cost of clothes, travel, hotel, if you make it a mini vacation, which we did.

The great thing is, he got to see cadavers, surgeries. Kids were throwing up. He said, No way he’s going into surgery. So it wasn’t just an expensive summer camp.

You stay in a dorm, you eat in the dining hall. You do do some sightseeing.

And there’s no academic pressure, no papers, no big projects, which I guess is why people say it’s no good for college apps.

Although we still haven’t quite recovered financially from last summer’s programs, I’m still considering something similar again. I mean, it’s better than gaining another 30 pounds playing video games all summer.

I got full financial aid to attend the program so it was completely worth it in my opinion. I met amazing people from Cali, Oregon, and MA and still keep in touch with them. I was lucky to also tour Harvard Medical School and still regularly email one of the med students! The program just helped me realize that I truly DO want to have a career involving both scientific research as well as clinical practice.

It can be a lot of fun, but it’s not prestigious.

Do it for the good time, not for the app.
