National Youth Orchestra 2 - selected as an Alternate Violinist chances

Hi CC adviser,
I have an 8th grader boy. He applied NYO2 last December and selected as an Alternate musician.
I have three questions.

  1. I just want to know if there is any chances getting off the waitlist?
  2. Does anyone know someone who was an alternate and made to the main program later month?
  3. As he is trying to apply a pre-college in NYC and Boston and high school’s with music concenturation program, could he use the “Alternate” as a personal accomplishment? We submitted all the documents and are waiting a result but we would like to add into his application if it has any value.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Cheers!

Oh, thank you so much.

I just wanted to follow up.
My son didn’t make to the program as everyone who made to the program said yes.
We will try again next year.
Cheers!

Still an amazing accomplishment!

Thank you so much. I will let my son know.

Update.
We added NYO2 accomplishment for my son’s boarding school applications.
I think it helped to get in Phillips Academy with outstanding students scholarship.
Thanks to music 2023’s advise.

Wonderful news! Phillips Academy is an amazing school and to have solid scholarship going in is even better! Congratulations!

Thank you so much.
Our family is very very excited. One concern is how is he going to balance between heavy workload from school and practice Violin. He is kind of lazy and setback easily.
Thank again guys!

I’m sure first year as a boarding student will come with its own surprises and challenges as well but I suppose the school will have a strong guidance and counseling team to help overcome these issues. Best of luck with this transition.

Thank you for your best wishes.
I will update you in one year from now if you are interested.

Sure thing! Will look forward to hearing of his amazing journey! All the best!

Oh, HereWeGoAgain2018
As I stalking your threads, your kid is also a musician. sorry!
If he goes to Andover, do you know any good Violin teacher you can recommend near Andover or even Boston area?
Thanks in advance.

@sheepdad my daughter attends an arts high school in the Boston area and although she is not a violinist the music director at her school is a violinist and there are many kids who take lessons from various teachers. Give me a couple days and I will get back to you with a possible list. You can also ask Phillips Academy to see if they have any teachers coming to the school to give lessons. I bet there are other kids there who have the same need. A teacher who comes to Phillips Academy to teach would be ideal considering the distances.

You can also consider enrolling your son at the NEC Prep. There are many orchestral and chamber opportunities there and if he is interested in playing such repertoire this might also give him that path. He would have to have transportation arranged each Saturday though. Again, Phillips Academy might have other kids enrolled going there each Saturday so the transportation might already be arranged. Suggest asking them about this as well.

If coming to NEC Prep then the violin lessons can be there on Saturdays as well. I know many kids who do this. 1:1 lesson earlier in the morning followed by ensemble participation.

Will be back with some names.

This is very helpful. Thank you so much again for your willingness to help out.
I am going to revisit PA in two weeks. I will find out from the school in the meantime.
Tho, I am not sure my son is NEC Prep level. can you look at it and tell me?

Appreciated again.

Hi @sheepdad it’s my pleasure if I can be of assistance.

I am not an expert by any means so I don’t think I will review and comment on the videos but what I can say about NEC prep is that they have suitable programs for very young kids (Suzuki etc) all the way up to HS seniors preparing for conservatory applications. A large number of orchestras place young musicians according to their levels and also coached chamber music ensembles. Suggest you review their web page and give them a call as well.

Best of luck!!! This is all so exciting.

Thank you @HereWeGoAgain2018.
I will keep you updated.
Best!

@sheepdad my S loved his two years in the NEC Prep program (and wished he began earlier). I think there’s a wide range of ability in the program - however, your S is exceptional!

@drummergirl Thank you.
In the west coast, we only have Colburn pre-college. They are hard to get in like Julliard prep.
NEC is a little different than those two prep schools I guess.
I made an appointment NEC this week for visiting. I will update how it went.
Best!

We just came back from the spring revisit day and met a couple of Violin students at the school.
They told us that going out to Boston every weekend is eventually effect my son because a lot of EC/Sports events are happening also over the weekend. And they are pretty satisfied with their adjunct Violin faculties. They are serving every level of the players.
