Does anybody know anything about the National Youth Orchestra of the United States? How competitive is it to be accepted ?

It isn’t scheduled to start until 2013.

Yes, woodwinds, but the application is due next week.

Applications start 6/1 and stop early September. We’ve been getting info on this for a few months. My kid will try out. How competitive? Probably very. Audition must be on video.
Good Luck - here’s the FAQ.

This sounds like a fabulous opportunity! As for competitive - I would guess it will be one of the most competitive youth orchestras for that age group there is. But fantastic if one is chosen.

It does sound pretty good. The age level won’t work for my S, however–he will have “missed it by that much” (for any “Get Smart” fans out there). Wish they would have started it a year sooner!

It will be competitive I am pretty sure, very competitive. What is interesting is the exclusion of students already in music performance programs in college. In one sense that makes it less competitive, but given the level of performers I have seen at the pre college level or students who were high level who don’t do music in college, I am pretty certain it is going to be as competitive as the top youth programs out there. Given that this is coming out of Carnegie Hall and having a conductor like Gergiev, you can bet there will be a lot of kids competing to get into this because of its visibility as well as the level.

good thread.

So the results are out today. Did anyone make it in?

My kid is an alternate as is best friend (different instrument). We know of several that received notes indicating they were not accepted

I’m an alternate too. I wonder how many alternates there are… Should I be hopeful?

My son was accepted on double bass.

Congrats Momtheroadie! As for being hope t-concerto. You never know. I do know that there was a hard time filling one instrument and our local youth orchestra was approached and that kid (with desire as mo major turned them down!

If you don’t mind me asking, what instrument was that NYO spot for?

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement patientpoppa. I’ll pray for the best and remember that there is more than one road to success.

Sure. My kid is flute, best friend oboe. Both principal in local youth orchestra. How about you?

Violin, congrats to your kid and the friend!
