I applied to the NYSC without really knowing what it was, and was fortunate enough to be accepted. I have looked at the website, and have seen the basic idea of the camp, but was wondering if anyone has attended the camp or has heard anything about it from someone who has. Does anyone know how selective the camp is, and how beneficial it is for college?

i thought only seniors are taken. so no benefit for college. it’s not super selective - only statewide - unless you happen to be in big states. not very technical, camp is fun if you enjoy outdoors.

Yea, I thought it was only seniors as well. What state are you from? I’ll be one of the delegates from Maryland.

Thanks for your response. I probably should have been more clear, I am a senior from Illinois, and was wondering about if they teach you stuff that will be helpful in college as opposed to actually helping you get in.

My son attended a lot of summer programs, including Duke TIP, our state’s governor’s school and RSI. He really enjoyed them all, especially RSI, where he did research, wrote a paper and had to present it to professors. But his favorite was NYSC. It wasn’t a super-heavy academic program, although there were a lot of lectures by people in different fields and classes of some sort, but he learned a lot and met some great people. He really liked the non-academic things they did - camping, rafting, climbing, etc. It was more like a “regular” summer camp, but with learning thrown in. He would tell you to go if you’re accepted and expect to have a great experience.
