I am a native american interested in Dartmouth and am even considering ED. Does anyone know if they still offer the native american fly in program? If so, how competitive is it to be chosen to fly up? I think it would help me decide, as I am torn between Dartmouth, RICE, and another ivy league. Thanks!

I also noticed that for the class of 2012 they have a whopping 4% native americans, while most schools only take 1% or less. Any insight on this? I’m guessing its in my favor??

Seems to have a different name, but same premise as the Fly-in. Deadline is tomorrow tho’ - but I imagine if you contact the admissions office they may grant you a slight extension to finish up the app and get your materials in.

I went on the fly-in program last fall. I’m not sure how competitive it is, but I know people that didn’t make it into the program that applied to Dartmouth and are now students there. There were about 50 of us in October '08. I believe there was another section in June '08, but I don’t know how many were in that one.
I think that they mail prospective Native students information about the program – that’s how I found out/applied. I’m just making a guess here, but I think that everyone that selected “American Indian” as their ethnicity on a College Board test that was sent to the school may have been contacted?
As for the stats… yes, Dartmouth loves Native Americans. One of the goals of the college is to educate Natives, so it’s in your favor.

Anarchy Bunny, great link! I don’t remember the name “Dartmouth Bound”, but this is definitely the same program. The deadline’s tomorrow, but if you call Admissions and ask for an extension of a couple days… just fill it out and fax it in. I think there’s a peer rec part of it, but that may have changed.

Being Native American is certainly a boost in the college admissions process, and maybe even more so at Dartmouth than at most other schools… after all, Dartmouth was founded to Christianize/educate Native Americans.

That’s great!
Cornell and Amherst both have them… some other schools do too, although a lot of them are “diversity” weekends or something along those lines. There’s people on here that could tell you more about other fly-in programs. Out of the ones I knew about, Dartmouth’s had the nicest deadline. Search around on college websites and you might find some?
As for scholarships geared towards Natives… there are a few… I think the Bureau of Indian Affairs offers some? For any URM, the Gates scholarship is probably the best… there’s also Coca-Cola, which I think considers minority status.
The only Native-specific one I applied for was the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons scholarship (oh, Fastweb). The application was really short. I don’t know how competitive it is or how many people receive it.

I hope that you get into the Fly-in program – it’s a great way to find out if Dartmouth’s for you.

yes, they have been VERY nice and willing to work with me. I hope I get accepted! I think that it will really come down the essays, as my scores and rank are probably above average for a native american.

sorry to divert from dartmouth, but can anyone give me the links for other fly-in/minority weekend programs whose deadlines have not passed? i’ve tried looking for cornell and amherst but i couldn’t find anything. also can anyone explain more about the gates scholorship??

I am definetaly still pretty set on Dartmouth, one of my relatives actually worked as an assistant debate coach a while back and loved it! I really want to do some sort of research as part of the undergraduate experience so I’m open to any other comments/suggestions, etc!

muffin- I pm’ed the link to you. Since there are other schools listed and this is a Dartmouth forum, it may not be PC to do so. For anyone who wants to find it, do a search for Fall Diversity Programs.

thank you so much!
and yea, i’m sorry about that. i’ll be sure to let everyone know whether or not i get accepted to dartmouth bound, i’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!
