I just received a nomination in the mail today for the National Young Leaders Conference. Does anyone know if this is a worthwhile thing to attend, is it legit, or is it just a waste of time and money? Any info or input is welcome - thanks!

Most people denounce all programs like NYLC as garbage, but one of my friends went to this program and enjoyed it immensely. She got to hear speeches from Senator Casey and other famous politicians, and was later invited to attend the inauguration (which she did, but it didn’t turn out too well). So if you really want something to do over the summer in that field and have a few thousand dollars you really don’t care about (or can get a scholarship to it) then I would say go for it. That isn’t to say, however, that you could probably find a much more worthwhile opportunity for your summer (ie volunteering, taking college class, going on a mission/foreign service trip, etc.)
PS: But if you do go, I would recommend calling them and telling them you have a difficult financial situation. I hear that they often will just cut a few hundred dollars off the price without any questions.
