As the deadline is approaching, it's getting harder and harder for me to choose my college. I'm a Seattle guy who is infatuated with urban life, and obviously Whitman and its geography are nothing close to that. But after talking with one of the Whitman students on the phone, she made it seem like Whitman is still an amazing school for even those crazy east coasters. Right now it's pretty much Whitman or NYU (or maybe UW), and I really love every aspect of both schools besides location. Is there anyone on the same boat as I am? Help out a fellow friend!

Can you get on the facebook for the admitted students? THats where my kid found the group that made the difference. Walla Walla is a small town. BUT you won't find a better group of peers if you are in the range of kids who really fit in there.

The town might not have much, but anyone who says that little goes on on campus is frankly lying to you. My choice was between Occidental (right in the middle of LA) and Whitman. I chose for location and have never regretted it.

One major advantage Whitman has over NYU is the fact that Whitman is a campus, with a central area for students to gather. NYU is more choppy, and since it's in the city, it's not as comforting as the typical college setting.

I didn't visit the NYU campus, but I passed by it, and it seemed very bleak and lacking as far as a connected, cohesive campus goes. Whitman is very well-run, and they don't set you up to deal with annoying technicalities. They have been the easiest and most welcoming admissions staff to work with.

Walla Walla itself is really not that bad. I come from a small town and really didn't want to go to college in another one, but Walla Walla is growing. Plus, there is SO much to do on campus that many students speak of the "Whitman bubble" and never feeling the need to venture off campus because everything is there.

The problem with city/commuter schools is that it takes away from the social aspect. Rest assured that you will be very well taken care of at Whitman. That was the major selling point for me!

kimchi - Have you visited both schools? My son was prepared to love NYU, but the visit convinced him he would not be happy there. He loves the city, but the campus is very spread out and the vibe he got from talking to students is that there's very little in the way of "campus life." Social life is spread out around the city, rather than concentrated on a campus. It also seemed difficult to move around from one college to another if you decide you want to double-major, minor, or change majors. If Whitman has a course of study that suits you, it would be a great choice.
