Naval Academy Computers

I don't think I'll be able to survive without my Mac :(

I hear ya, buddy.

Here at work I'm forced to use a Windoze PC made by Hell. Can't stand it.

I bring my PB G4 from home, work on it, then transfer the files.

I hate firewalls and Lotus Notes! I used to be able to use my Mac full-time at my last job! :(

thankfully i found this out....all the things i've heard here..i've heard before...so i guess it really must be true...when i went on a recruit visit a 3/C was watching tv on her desktop....(family guy)...so are you saying we can't listen to music? Her speakers were pretty loud...i thought someone was going to burst in and start yelling at us...can we watch dvd's plebe yr.? I mean, a dvd player is installed on the computers...i hear how ever in your plebe yr. you'll be sooo busy, the only thing you'll do in your room is sleep....

You are not allowed to have media (movies or music) or games on your computer during Plebe Year.

So have stated those who are there now. I actually read the rates document, but no longer have it.

"ward hall monitors your every key stroke"

That's complete BS. They may flag searches for "bombing USNA" or "how to join Al Qaeda" but they're not gonna wait for you to say, "this place sucks" on AIM to your brother and then kick you off.

Do you work in Ward Hall?

If it's like where I work (a large school district), they CAN monitor every keystroke if they want to, but there volume of traffic makes it unlikely they'd peek in on you without a reason.

you try to stop almost 4000guys or 1000 in my case from not looking at porn, haha ...good joke.

Watch your roomate get expelled for it, and I guarantee you'll think twice.

Do what we did: subscribe to Penthouse. It's safer.

Ward Hall can monitor anything you do on the network, in fact, you give up your privacy by using the network.

BUT...

They monitor the network MOSTLY for illegal activity....that would be downloading illegal music, P2P file sharing networks, personal servers, etc.

Porn, while not acceptable because it does not promote good order and discipline, is not illegal (assuming of age) or hazardous to the network. Oh and lots of people look at porn as davygravy3 says.

Many people get their ports shut off for downloading viruses, not porn.

Moreover, to search 4000+ computers for porn is wasting time and lacks manpower. If they do search, they do it by flagging.

I work real close to computers, so I have a good idea!

Zaph, porn won't get you kicked out...just tours, restriction, and demerits....just imagine about 1000 MIDN getting fried for porn, it won't happen.

Plebes do not rate their computer for entertainment (except for computer games on the weekend). In my company that means NO speakers...not sure about the extra screens. Computers, other than issued, maybe allowed via chit. Additionally, operating systems other than Windows XP, may be allowed, also via chit.

Jadler03- you're at USNA now? What year?

So you can have your own computer with a permit for it? What restrictions are there on that?

Zaphod--I used to work in Ward Hall but they got ****ed off that I forged six college degrees.

Basically you have to have a good reason for adding it.

Well, I know just enough about them to be dangerous, so bear with me...

How would they know it was illegal, and what is a "personal server"?

Wasn't sure how picky they were. I would have been stunned if Mids NEVER looked, of course.

As for frying 1,000 Midshipmen, you wanna bet? Let me tell you of the time when close to 85% of my class got fried for UA because they didn't show up for a pro lecture on a Saturday morning. The cartoon in the Log was the OOW leaning on a 4-foot-tall stack of Form-2's with a big grin saying, "So! We can't fry all of you, eh?" No, I was not one of them. I went (It was about submarines, and I was very, VERY gungy about subs). I dragged my roomate with me, saving him, too.

With regard to media privilages for plebes....I was on my CVW 2 weeks ago and friday night plebes were allowed to listen to music, watch dvds etc....the person in my room borrowed 40 Year Old Virgin from a firstie...pretty sick. They said privilages depend on who is in charge that day and whether or not they are having a good day....

You cannot setup your computer to be a server (to be a web or any other host). Though, for IT/CS students MySQL servers are permitted.

ITSD publishes an instruction, just like COMDT, USNAINST, and BUPERS does.

Flagging is when another computer is setup to search for certain things through the network. For example, if ITSD wanted to flag the "f" word, anyone who typed and submitted an "f" word would be known.

Now-a-days, they just have huge briefs...telling everyone what they did wrong and not to do it again (slap on the wrist). They could secure liberty too.

Personal server must be like your own servant. Either that or it would be hosting files on your computer (via a webpage, FTP host, etc). Flagging would be those lovely guys at Ward Hall saying "Damn...that Brian kid sure looks at a lot of porn." Then they would pay closer attention to me (by flagging me).

And it probably wouldn't get you kicked out but I'm sure they would somehow humiliate you. I can only imagine all the ways they could screw someone over in the head for pleasuring themselves too many times to porn websites. And if everyone did it, they could very well put restrictions on there. If they started filtering websites that contained certain keywords (porn, pornography, etc) or that were categorized there, a lot of people would be pretty mad. And it's not hard to do so I could easily see them doing it if they figured that the entire class was being a bit too rebellious. They could also do time restrictions (no internet after midnight) or something like that. Then, that would screw over people that actually needed to work!

All possibilities...but I'm no Academy grad so I wouldn't know...

Ok so let's say they brief you on "NEVER LOOK AT PORN AGAIN YOU LITTLE PUKES!!!" So then people still do it...then do they single people out and issue consequences for individuals or continue to "slap your wrist"?

Yes, JL2010...it does depend who is on deck and at the end of the spring semester, most companies give plebes some privileges back. So it was not odd that this happened.

However, for the first semester and part of the second semester, it is usually pretty strict!

Wow...at least they cut the plebes some slack. It's an entire year! Breaks are good every once in a while (morale, etc).

Thanks, jadler.

Last time I knew how to program a computer was in 1987, and that was in TurboPascal 3.0, the rocking language of the time! :D
