Naval Academy given high ranking

Report notes its selectiveness, places it in top 20 of liberal arts schools

And you thought it was hard to get into Amherst? Try the U.S. Naval Academy. U.S. News and World Report released today its annual rankings of universities and colleges in America, and it says that the Annapolis institution is tougher to get into than the top colleges.

More important for the Naval Academy, perhaps, is that it beat out the Army and Air Force academies in the first rankings to include the service academies....

I can't believe that USNews ranked USNA and West Point with liberal arts colleges?? Anyway, Navy came out on top with West Point and Air Force trailing the boat school.

St. John's protests magazine's rankings

The latest college rankings place the Naval Academy among the top liberal arts colleges in the country, but again prompted St. John's College to protest the very notion of rating colleges.

According to U.S. News & World Report magazine's2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges," the Naval Academy, with a score of 80, ranked 20th among liberal arts colleges in the United States, tied with Oberlin College in Ohio....

While it's all a beauty contest, it's nice being pretty and having others tell you so.

While I've not seen the publication, this could really be fun for braggin' rites, knowing that last season USNA was among the top 3 or so in the engineering rankings, and now is among the top 20 in the liberal arts. Talk about double dipping.

In the end, it's essentially meaningless, but let's not tell anyone. ;)

This is a good ranking to enhance the credibility of our academic prowess to skeptics like we have seen in our forum before.

But, to many, this is an alarming statistic.

To be considered a liberal arts college, over 50% of the degrees awarded must be from liberal arts majors. Even though USNA still ranks fairly high in engineering, we have fallen dramatically from our top 5 ranking last year. Perhaps this is an indication that we are not producing as many engineers. I say that we all are deeply immersed in the engineering curriculum so to be ranked with the liberal arts colleges should not be a trigger to push the panic button.

I myself am a history major and proud of USNA with this ranking. We must cherish that we are also an academic institution in addition to producing combat leaders.
