THE NAVAL ACADEMY is hosting the annual "Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS)" for students who have just completed their junior year who want to know what life is like as a midshipman. There are different weeklong sessions available in June when the high school students can experience all of the various trainings, drills, seminars, and other aspects of a Naval Academy student. Interested students should apply by April 1, 2005 online at www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm.

It's a good program that I highly recommend! If anyone wants to know anything about it, just ask here or PM me.

Army has one too. A friend's son did the Coast Guard summer program last year, and now is a first year at USAF in Colorado Springs, based in part, on his successful participation and the recs that he received. It sounds wonderful for kids who are interested in one of the academies.

Yea, they told us that kids who attended NASS were given more consideration in the admissions process, which is completely fair. There were three types of kids at the end of NASS: those who flat out hated it, those who were indifferent, and those who liked it. I would imagine that the majority of applicants from NASS come from the last group, and, unlike applicants who didn't attend, they have a good idea of what midshipmen life is like and whether or not they'd want to do it.

One of my friends did it last year and he is headed to anapolis in fall. They even flew him out right before Thanksgiving and he got to see a football game and experience life during school. He said it was it was a lot of work, but now he knows a little bit more of what to expect, and it made the decision to attend easier when he was getting into all kinds of other schools.
