Naviance in a nutshell?

mom2sons: at our school the answers to your questions are:

–you can choose either 1600 or 2400 scale SAT via a pulldown menu
–no SATIIs on the scattergrams
–I guess nobody at our school takes the ACT–at any rate I get a “not enough info” message when I try to choose ACT from the pulldown
–our school only lists W GPA; I don’t know if UW would be an option at a school that keeps track of both

It seems to be customizable to the school. Our vertical axis is on a (weighted) 5.0 scale, and there’s a drop-down box to choose if you want a 1600 or 2400 SAT scale, or ACT, on the horizontal axis. No SATIIs are used. Each data point is shown as either a red ‘x’ for ‘denied’ or a green square for ‘accepted’, along with various other symbols that denote early decision, early action, deferred, etc.

There are many schools that allow users to log in as guest, if your school doesn’t subscribe to Naviance. Just do a google search of Naviance + your state + “guest login”.

Thanks for the info - I guess I’ll use 1600 or 2400 based on what the school reports. Some report all 3, and others use just R and M. I’ll try the guest login as well.

Spent a fun hour digging thru my S’s school Naviance. It appears to be four years of info on applications, acceptances, admits, denys (?). Scattergrams have drop down menus allowing for a choice of weighted or unweighted GPA as well as 1600 SAT, 2400 SAT, ACT or IB.

There is also a list by school of the number of acceptances and number of current attendees. Those with current attendees are also on a map. Woo hoo what a great source of info. You can really see how your child’s stats compare to stats of those who applied from the same school. Very valuable. At the price (dollars and time) of each application, it is worth doing your hw. Just need to find out source of data to verify its accuracy.

The GPA on Naviance is plotted according to the high school’s own grading system. We have weighted and unweighted shown, and the SATs are highest combined for each student.

I really wish ours did weighted vs. unweighted. I may have to ask the guidance counselors why ours doesn’t.

Found something REALLY interesting on Naviance tonight. This assumes your kid has loaded the schools to which he/she intends to apply into the software.

Go to “College Match” and it shows a list of all the schools you’ve listed. It then shows where students who applied to School X also applied…so for Carleton, it lists Mac, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Brown and Grinnell as the top four. Scroll to the bottom of the page and there is a real gem (again, assuming scores and GPA are entered). It shows you a list of “matches” based on your scores and GPA, and how many kids in that range FROM YOUR SCHOOL were accepted. It is also possible to “adjust matches,” which shows you the parameters the system uses and lets you change them.

Very, very interesting stuff.

I just tried this, CountingDown, and found that only one of the schools we’re applying to is on our match list…but three schools we considered and rejected are on it. Part of me now wants to resurrect these schools for consideration, but I think that would prompt a family rebellion, and probably rightly so.

^^ Yeah, there was at least one noteworthy school on S’s list that wasn’t in the “match” list. OTOH, we saw comforting news on others he likes a lot.
