Navigating the Campus/Busses

Can someone give insights on the campus buses at UD. I saw none during Accepted Student Day. What is their schedule Mon- Fri and Weekends. One parent told me that they stop at 6pm Mon-Fri and that there are none on weekends. How do the kids at Laird campus make it down to the rest of the campus especially when it is dark/bad weather? Since there is only one library seems like those at Laird campus would need to study in their dorms if busses are not available evenings or weekends.

Also are there shuttles to get students without cars to places like Target, Walmart, the Christiana Mall, a grocery store, etc?

Appreciate info from those familiar with this.

Also how far it it to walk from the North or West dorms to the heart of campus? Is it safe to do this at night?

Busses run M-F about every 20 minutes from about 4:30 am until 6:10 PM. Evening busses run every 40 minutes seven days a week from 6:10 until 10:10 pm. Night busses run seven days a week about every 20 minutes from 10:10 pm until 2:00-4:00am. There is no bus service during the days on Sat. or Sun. There are a number of routes (see the campus bus website for details). Depending on how fast you walk it takes about 10-15 minutes to get from the West Campus dorms and 15-20 minutes from the North campus dorms to get to the Library (if you consider this the heart of the campus). While the campus is well lighted and there is a reasonably good amount of campus/Newark police patrols it is still a good idea to take sensible precautions when walking at night (avoid walking alone) as you would anywhere. There are DART bus routes that run from the campus to the stores/mall you asked about. Actually only a relatively small number of freshman (I believe about 400 -500) are housed on the Laird (North) campus. Most of the freshman are housed on the East and West campus dorms. Hope this info is helpful.

The UD smartphone app tracks the buses on each route in real time. It’s pretty cool. And you can do the same thing on the http://udshuttle.com/</a> website.

I’ve found the UD website to be filled with valuable information.

I’m going to try and address each point of your post as clear as possible.

Firstly, there are a couple buses that run on the weekends. They are the evening route 1 and 2, and I THINK the late bird (which runs from like 11-3am or something). All of these buses don’t start running until later in the day.

When you son/daughter comes to the school, make sure they obtain a bus schedule (which can be found on the buses themselves or in Trabant right across from the lounge to their left). The schedule is hard to understand at first, but once they get it it’s extremely helpful for when their phone dies and can no longer track the buses via the app (which I highly suggest they download if they have a smart phone).

No buses running or you’re running late for something? You walk. From Laird to Trabant I hear it’s about a 15-20 minute walk, which goes by faster than you would think. Add another 5 if you’re walking from Trabant to the library (the times also depend on how fast you walk, too).

The only shuttle that provides transportation to a convienence store is the east campus bus. You need to catch it on time at the spot, or else you suffer a 50 minute wait to catch it again. It goes as far as Pathmark and the K-mart (however, you will need to get off at the first Technology Park stop and walk across the road to get to the actual stores from there). Otherwise, you take the Dart bus 55 or 35 (pretty sure either either one of those, but don’t take my word for it; do your research) to the Christiana mall. From there you can go to the mall, Target, Michaels, etc.

From north-west campus (depending greatly on the route you take, believe me, the route makes a huge difference) I THINK takes 15-20 minutes. I never actually walked that distance so it is different for everyone.

Also, a general rule of thumb is that you assume nowhere is safe at night and travel with a friend. Recently there were a lot of thefts this year, and people were physically assaulted (you can sign up for alerts from the police). Just make sure that whoever is going there is smart enough to realize that nowhere is 100% safe and that they shouldn’t travel across campus in the middle of the night. UD is literally “one with the city” so anything can happen.

Hope this helped!
