How efficient is it to get around the campus on the UCSC shuttle bus system.
What happens after midnight when the campus shuttles stop running and you are visiting a friend who lives at another college. How would you get back to your dorm?

Also, are the campus shuttles so overcrowded that students find they are late to class because of this?

My brother went to UCSC for a couple years and I found myself riding the shuttle all the time. It is extremely convenient. Not many colleges have a shuttle system to get around the campus. From my point of view, the shuttle is not all that necessary as I am pretty sure the sidewalks go from one side of the campus to the other. In other words the shuttle is a convenience, not a necessity. The shuttle usually only had a handful of people on them, and at the busy class times, at most they were half-full. The shuttle is comparable in size to a city bus.

The buses are actually really convenient, because it can be a 15-20 minute walk across campus. Especially when you are getting to class, they are convenient but they are often packed during class times, and sometimes its faster walking than waiting for the next one. There are lighted sidewalks, etc. and it's not all that bad walking around, even at night. Also, many students have bikes and can quickly get around campus on them - this is a very bike-friendly campus.

is it really a bike-friendly campus? i went to a tour of ucsc a couple of days ago and they said bikes aren't incredibly popular because of all the hills. but i would like to bring my bike, if it's not too difficult biking

To get to classes, walking is easy (not to mention awesome because you get to walk through the forest). Buses are pretty frequent too but I agree that sometimes they're so packed that walking would be faster.

I used to work across campus until 1am at night and I'd have to wait for the city bus... which comes about once an hour. That was a pain. I wouldn't recommend walking across campus at night. The lamps are dim and there are mountain lions (i haven't encountered any... yet).

I think I would be more concerned on tripping at night than encountering mountain lions. It's Rare (with the capital 'R'). Shuttles are great to get around. It is definitely pack during major class times, so I would definitely suggest walking or taking a bike. Honestly, I just got a bike a couple months ago and now I've been using it almost every single day. It might be hilly, but it's not so bad after riding around a few times.

As long as you have a gear-mountain bike and relatively decent endurance, you should have little trouble navigating through the campus. You can put your bike in front of the busses if you get too tired too. I think a Bike is a great way to get around. It is also a good way to drive around the Santa Cruz area. There are some trails behind the campus for some fun on the weekends.

^ Well you are in the middle of the forest. You will see deer and other wild life around the area as well. I dont think you need to worry about Mountain lions though as they do not want to be around you.
