Navy Federal Credit Union

So I sent in the paperwork and a check to the NFCU in the provided envelope.

Will they send us any kind of confirmation or any other paperwork before we report? Or will we just find out everything on I-Day?

I'm thinkin' about calling the USNA office to see if they got my information.

My daughter received her pin number and account confirmation in the mail today. She mailed the check and paperwork out about ten days ago.

I got a pin number a week or two back, recieved my VISA card in the mail last week!

Member since August 3rd, 1986. :D

Zaphod...you might want to sit down, cuz this is gonna make you feel just a little old...

...but that's when I was born...

This will make you feel older...that's more than a year before I was born...

Just activated my Visa card today...so excited!! I've never had any kind of card, credit or debit, before!!

And yes, they will send paperwork. And more paperwork. And confirmation beyond confirmation.

Holy crap that makes me feel old and I am not as old as zaphod. I was born in 83, I've got 4 years on basicly everybody. But if you really want a good bank I recommend USAA, no actual bank locations which sucks, but they refund ATM fees, interest bearing savings accounts and you can link it with car insurance. Which I highly recommend everyone using USAA, it is significantly cheaper for military members. I've been with them since 1998. See yall soon.

I second that for USAA. I've used USAA for a while now because I come from a military family, and I've really enjoyed the great benefits that the bank provides. I'm sticking strictly with USAA and not even bothering with NFCU.

How do you deposit checks with USAA? I just joined and was kinda curious as to how that works since they don't have bank locations.

They send you prestamped/addressed envelopes that you can send deposits in with. Plus how often do you actually deposit something besides a paycheck. And in the navy all they use is direct deposit, so that doesn't even happen. Just saves you some money on ATM's and gains you some on savings account.

Do yourself a favor: Cancel it and cut it up RIGHT NOW. You don't need it.

The Bible got it wrong: It's not love of money that's the root of all evil; it's credit cards.

Learn to live on cash. Trust me. I'm still paying for pizzas I ordered 10 years ago. Don't make the mistakes I did.

Smart man. It's what I have even now. They CANNOT be beat in terms of banking, insurance, or anything else they do. PERIOD.

So Zaphod, you're a member of NFCU and USAA? What did you find wrong/unsatisfying about NFCU that made you start using USAA?

Nothing unsatisfying. I used NFCU the whole 10 years I wore the uniform.

However, when I got out in 1996, I quickly discovered that USAA has the BEST insurance rates on cars and homes anywhere. Upon my divorce, I needed to start over, so I went with USAA on everything. Couldn't be happier.

USAA is designed to do everything on the phone or online. NFCU didn't have that back then, nor did they have insurance.

Having had both, I say the NFCU is a great bank, but USAA cleans its clock.

Question:

Do they have a choice between NFCU and USAA? Do they give them a choice?

Our son has an account w/USAA already and would hate for him to have to juggle two, plus, in terms of loans in the future, his account would be older.

We've had USAA for over twenty years and they are great!

Marmadillo, just want to make sure you know that it doesn't work like a credit card. There is not a large amount of another persons money at your disposal. You deposit, and you can spend. I am assuming you know this but you mentioned debit and credit. It just works where visa is taken. Don't worry Zaphod we aren't borrowing any money.

Yeah, I got mine about a month ago, and I have 460ish dollars, in it and a 100 to add. Yay.

We weren't offered a choice, but it was a very different world 20 years ago. Even if they don't now, there is nothing stopping you from changing your direct deposit later (say, after Plebe Summer).

Good for you! :)

Not sure I am understanding the difference between the NFCU and the NACC- can someone please elaborate?

I believe our son received paperwork in his last mailing to sign up for the NFCU, which he did, but I do not recall seeing anything about the NACC. Thanks for any info!

Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the term "NACC".

NFCU is Navy Federal Credit Union, and is a bank (Credit Union) just like any other, but which caters to the Navy and Marine Corps.

I've been a member since 1986, and stopped using them for reasons having NOTHING to do with them (divorce) only 2 years ago. They have branches at almost any Navy or Marine Corps base (sometimes more than one), and in some major cities (there is a branch in downtown Miami, where nary a ship moors). They have great service and are very convenient.

USAA (now that we're clarifying) is a bank/insurance provider/investment broker that caters EXCLUSIVELY to the military, CIA, FBI, etc. They offer a complete range of financial services, and are absolutely PHENOMINAL. I actually interviewed for a job with them a while back (didn't get it) and you WOULD NOT BELIEVE their facilities!

If I had to do it all over again, I would have been with USAA from 1986. When it comes to banking, however, you can't go wrong with either.

yup, I know it's a debit card and don't worry Zaphod, I'm a cash kind of person too (Dave Ramsey, anyone?). I have the Visa debit card just in case of emergency stuff and eBay -- my brother got stuck in Vermont last year before he got his debit card and couldn't rent a hotel room with cash, that sort of thing. USAA DOES sound phenomenal; since we already have our insurance through them with our parents, my brother likes the idea of their reimbursement of ATM fees.
