Dingman Lifts No. 8 Navy Over No. 4 Maryland, 7-6

College Park, Md. -- Junior Ian Dingman scored his third goal of the game with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter to give No. 8 Navy a 7-6 victory over No. 4 Maryland on Friday night at Byrd Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,512.

The game was all Navy during the first 30 minutes of play as the Midshipmen bottled up the Maryland offense and were leading 5-1 at the half. Senior All-American Joe Walters scored the lone Terrapin goal in the first half of play, converting an extra-man opportunity off an assist from sophomore Max Ritz.

Maryland came out at the start of the third quarter with renewed energy and it showed just 23 seconds into the period when Walters found an open Xander Ritz on the right side of the crease. Ritz buried a shot past Navy All-America goalie Matt Russell to score the Terps' second man-up goal of the game.

Senior All-American Bill McGlone pulled Maryland to within two goals just over 30 seconds later with his only goal of the game and the comeback seemed to be on. But Navy settled down and built the lead back to three goals on Terrence Higgins' second goal of the season at the 5:48 mark.

The Terps would cut the lead back to one on goals from freshman Dan Groot and Max Ritz and looked to complete the comeback with 12:22 left in the game, but Russell would not let Navy fall apart. With momentum on the Terps' side, Russell made two big saves on Walters and Xander Ritz to maintain the one-goal advantage.

That lead held up until the 3:22 mark when Walters took a feed from Brendan Healy and laced a shot past Russell to tie the game at 6-6. The play started with junior Ray Megill stripping Steve Looney of the ball in the Terrapin defensive zone and starting the clear that led to Walters' second goal of the game.

It looked as if the Terps would take the lead for the first time in the game on the ensuing face-off. Senior David Tamberrino won his 11th draw of the game to give Maryland possession of the ball with the clock winding down. But the Terps never got another shot off. The Mids caused a Maryland turnover with 1:16 left in the game and cleared the ball, setting up Dingman's game-winner.

The loss was the second-straight heartbreaker in the series for the Terps. Last season in Annapolis, Graham Gill scored with 14 seconds left in the game to give Navy a 9-8 win.

Defensively for Maryland, sophomore Jason Carter made seven saves after replacing starter Harry Alford midway through the first quarter. Megill finished the game with a career- best four caused turnovers in addition to two groundballs. Tamberrino finished with a game-high seven groundballs.

Maryland returns to action next Saturday night, April 15, when it renews college lacrosse's greatest rivalry for the 102nd time against Johns Hopkins. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start at Homewood Field in Baltimore and will be broadcast on ESPNU.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. All-American attack Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) scored a team-best three goals, including a strike with eight seconds remaining to lead No. 11 Navy to a 7-6 victory over fourth-ranked Maryland Saturday night at Byrd Stadium.

"It was a tale of two halves," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "It's exactly the type of game that I thought it would be. Honestly, it could have gone either way down the stretch. We were able to score some goals early and had a cushion. That was one of the most important things for us (to have a cushion)."

Another in a long line of one-goal games between the two ball clubs, Maryland was forced to climb back from a 5-1 halftime deficit as the Midshipmen capitalized on the Terrapins' mistakes. Navy scored four-consecutive goals between the first and second quarters with the latter three on extra-man opportunities. While Maryland fired just four fewer shots than the Mids in the opening half, All-American attack Joe Walters was the lone Terp to find the back of the net and that was on an extra-man situation.

Navy opened the door for the Terps in the second half when just six seconds into the third quarter close defenseman Victor Barger (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was flagged for a cross check. Senior middie Xander Ritz faked Navy All-American keeper Matt Russell (Madison, Conn.) both directions before sticking in an extra-man score for the Terps. Thirty seconds later, senior Bill McGlone fought through a trio of Mids to find the goal from two yards out and narrowed Navy's lead to 5-3.

The Mids were able to briefly interrupt Maryland's momentum when sophomore Terence Higgins (Chappaqua, N.Y.) faked his defender, switched shooting hands and fired a bullet from the left side into the net to give Navy a 6-3 lead with 5: 48 remaining in the third quarter.

Second-line midfielder Dan Groot and McGlone hooked up in last minute of the third quarter, as Groot produced his third goal of the year on an eight-yard shot straight up the gut to get the Terps to within two heading into the final period.

An errant pass by Dingman just a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter was scooped up by pole Ryan Clarke who connected with Max Ritz in transition and subsequently scored the Terps' fifth goal.

Maryland knotted the game with 3:22 to go when Walters pocketed his second goal of the game on a shot from seven yards out on the right side.

The Terps won the ensuing face-off, but were unable to put the ball into the net. Navy's short stick midfielders Ward Hackett (Oxford, Md.) and Geoff Leone (Massapequa, N.Y.) fought off Maryland's attack to pick up the ground ball and head to the offensive side of the field. After a shot failed to meet its intended mark, Navy had time to set up a final play.

Reminiscent of last year's matchup in which Graham Gill's goal with 14 seconds remaining gave Navy the win over Maryland, senior co-captain Jon Birsner (Levittown, N.Y.) set up behind the goal and found Dingman planted five yards out to the right of the goal. Dingman went right, but was forced to roll left with his shot sailing past keeper Jason Carter's right ankle with just eight seconds remaining on the clock.

"The intended play was designed to get a quick shot off," said Dingman. "We tried to set a screen, but it wasn't open, so I had to roll off my guy and luckily it went in. It's a play we worked on this week in practice in case of crunch time."

Russell had a phenomenal game in goal for the Mids where he stopped nine shots on goal, including five in the second half. Maryland, meanwhile, pulled starting keeper Harry Alford at the 8:16 mark in the second half and replaced him with Carter who stopped seven shots for the Terps.

Six of the last eight meetings between Navy and Maryland have been decided by one goal, including the last two. The Mids have won three in a row against the Terps, achieving the feat for the first time since 1969-71. It's also the first time Navy has won back-to-back games against the Terrapins in College Park since 1964 and 66.

Navy returns to action next Saturday when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to face off against arch rival Army in the annual Star Game. Action is set for 1:00 pm at Michie Stadium and will be televised by ESPNU.
