Navy ROTC Scholarships

I heard that the first NROTC Board for the 2008 academic year met for the first time on 10/5. Does anyone know the schedule?

How long does it take to hear after a Board meets if you get chosen?

TIA

is their first board meeting really on October 5th?? im curious because ..my recruiter said to send in all of my application by august 17th to ensure that the board received everything by August 21st which was when he said they would first meet...

^^^^^
The Selection Board is scheduled to meet in August and September; however, if they don't have enough applications they will postpone the board for a future date. Last year, the first Selection Board didn't meet until October.

I know the Board did not meet in August or September.

On a somewhat related topic, does anyone know when NROTC should show up as an "agency" on the DoDMERB website? Should it be shortly after the NROTC application is complete, or not until the application has been reviewed by the board?

Today, my recruiter mentioned NROTC not using the DoDMERB physical in favor of a MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) physical. Has anyone else heard this?

NROTC uses DODMERB. If you are only applying for NROTC and not USNA, then I believe that DODMERB comes after you actually get the scholarship. If you are applying for both, then you apply for DODMERB as soon as you can with all the USNA applicants.

Navy ROTC uses DODMERB for medical exams. Exam results aren't requested until aafter a scholarship is offered.

Well I know for a fact that the board was meeting in September because I have already been extended an offer for an NROTC scholarship.

And as far as I know NROTC is still using DODMERB. Both my USNA and NROTC applications appear in my DODMERB account and I haven't heard anything otherwise.

Interesting, we were told by the Navy that the Board did not meet in Sept. I don't know what to believe any more.

Anyway, congratulations on the scholarship. Judging by your user name I assume USNA is your first choice over NROTC?

Area coordinators can automatically give a certain amount of scholarships to extremely competitive candidates without even consulting the board, so maybe he got one of those.

Thanks GreatAmerican. That's why there is no mention of NROTC in my DoDMERB account, only USNA.

Yes, USNA is my first choice.

But I am applying to Rice, Vanderbilt, and University of Texas on the NROTC scholarship as a backup plan.

I recieved an early/automatic scholarship for NROTC- I had an interview with the Recruitment CO back in August or July. However I'm not sure which school I want as my first choice- does it really matter? Say I put Northwestern down as my first choice but then decide that I would rather go to UVA, will I be able to?

My dd and I recently met with officers from two of her "backup" NROTC schools, and we asked your very question. In both cases, the schools have very active units (120-170 mids each), and are very high demand schools. Both of the officers said that, while you can change your mind about which school is your number one, try to be sure that you have the one you like most as your number one if it is in high demand for NROTC. Some schools' slots fill up very fast.

Yes, it matters on the school, PlebeWannaBe. It's not a major problem to change from one to another IF there is a billet available at the school you request. At the toughies (Northwestern, Penn, Cornell, a few others) there are nearly always billets that go unfilled. Notre Dame tends to be the most popular and can be very challenging to both get in and get a billet there simultaneously. UVA is a mixed bag ... depending on a number of variables such as residency, timing, etc. So the short answer is that it does matter but it may not be irrevocable.

btw, for someone who asked about the "when" of the Board ... I believe my son got announcement of his last year on Oct. 8, and that was the 1st board to meet. These are awarded throughout the spring, and there is a sort of "down time" from December - March as I recall, when the Board does not meet, thus no awards.

Thanks for all the help-I'll try to narrow my schools down. It's been hard- nothing looks as good as USNA to me :P

My "Number 2" son was thinking about NROTC at Virginia Tech and UVA, but by the time he got around to finishing up his NROTC app, the billets were all filled for the incoming class of Freshmen. USNA came through late, and was his first choice anyway, but he waited too long give himself other options. Unsolicited advice: Don't wait.

At schools like Notre Dame, if you don't get picked up for a billet there at the first board, you get wait listed. This year we had a bunch of kids wait listed, but a lot kids didn't get in to Notre Dame itself, so everyone on the wait list was given a scholarship. It all comes down to luck with the wait list, so it is very important to put a lot of thought into the school choice. Also, make sure to get your application in as soon as possible.
