Mids Seek Third Straight Win Wednesday Against Holy Cross After completing a two-game road sweep of the Lehigh Valley, the resurgent Navy men's basketball team hosts Patriot League-leader Holy Cross on Wednesday night, beginning at 7:00 pm, in Alumni Hall. The Mids currently stand 13-12 overall and 3-7 in Patriot League play, just one game back in the win column for the fourth and final home Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal.

However, as Navy searches for its third straight win, the task won't be an easy one. Holy Cross is tied atop the league standings with a 10-1 league record and a 19-7 overall record. The Crusaders lost their last game, a 48-45 decision at co-leader Bucknell on Friday night, but still control their own fate, virtue of a higher RPI than the Bison.

The Crusaders are led by Keith Simmons, the odds-on favorite for Patriot League Player of the Year. Simmons is averaging 17.8 ppg overall, bumping the average to 18.5 in Patriot League games. He is also averaging 6.0 rpg in league play and is shooting 50.8 percent from the field in PL play. Torey Thomas is averaging 14.2 ppg in Patriot League play and has already dished out 125 assists this year, averaging 4.81 per game for the entire season. In conference games, Thomas averages 5.27 apg per game. The last member of the double-digit club for Holy Cross is center Tim Clifford, who chips in 10.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg, while shooting 45.0 percent from the field.

As a team, Holy Cross is averaging 63.3 ppg while giving up 58.0 ppg. In Patriot League play, Holy Cross is allowing foes to score just 53.7 ppg. The Crusaders shoot 42.8 percent from the field, 36.7 percent from long range and are allowing foes to connect on just 40.4 percent of its shots. In league games, Holy Cross is outrebounding foes by over seven per game.

Greg Sprink leads the Mids with a 16.8 ppg average after dumping in 29 points in Saturday's win over Lafayette. The Mids are shooting a blistering 46.1 percent from three-point range over the last three games and rank 20th in the nation in three-pointers per game. The Mids have made 10+ three-pointers in three straight games for the first time in school history.

Paul Harris Named Patriot League and ECAC Track Athlete of the Week

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy junior middle distance runner Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) has been selected the Patriot League and ECAC Track Athlete of the Week following one of the best weekends in Navy men’s track & field history, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Harris provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in two events and broke two school records at the Iowa State Classic last weekend.

He opened the weekend by competing on Navy’s distance medley relay unit that posted a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:41.71 to place second last Friday. The effort Harris, junior Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas), junior William Ricks (Sussex, Va.) and junior Jeff Sarchione (Alliance, Ohio) ranks as the fifth-fastest time in the nation and the third-best clocking in Navy’s indoor program history.

The product of Woodbury, Minn., came back on Saturday to top a field of more than 90 runners in the 800-meter run. Harris became the first Navy runner in program history to complete the indoor 800-meter run in less than 1:50.00, crossing the finish line with a blistering time of 1:48.46. The clocking places him third in the country, less than a second off of Lopez Lomong’s (Northern Arizona) national-best time of 1:47.60. Harris owns the top-three indoor 800-meter run times in program history and has won the event in each of his four races this year.

Less than two hours later in the 4x400-meter relay, the final event of the meet, Harris bounced back to once again etch his name in the record books. Harris, Ricks, junior Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior indoor team captain Cameron Lindsay (Kernersville, N.C.) teamed up to break the school record with an eighth-place time of 3:12.07. The showing was more than a second faster than the previous program record set during the 1979-80 indoor season.

The Patriot League and ECAC have recognized the Navy junior twice this season, as he first earned weekly accolades following two first-place efforts against Princeton on Jan. 6. He has earned the Patriot League’s Track Athlete-of-the-Week honors five times during his career.

Harris, last season’s Patriot League Indoor Championship Track Athlete of the Meet, and the Midshipmen will head up to West Point, N.Y., to compete at the 2007 Patriot League Championship this Friday through Sunday.

Navy Men's Swimming Team Chases Fourth League Crown

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's swimming and diving team will attempt to win its fourth Patriot League title in as many years this week when the league's championship meet takes place on the Bucknell campus in Lewisburg, Pa.

The three-day championship was originally slated to run Thursday through Saturday, but due to the weather conditions in the area the meet has been pushed back one day and will now run Friday through Sunday.

The Mids have won the league crown during each of their previous three seasons as members of the Patriot League by margins of 180, 185 and 200 points, respectively.

"Many factors go into putting together a great meet," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "This year we have improved in several of the areas I felt we could have done better in during past meets. And now, we have the opportunity to find out how good we can be in the water and on the boards. We are ready for the chance to go up to Bucknell and compete for this year's championship."

Using times posted during the 2006-07 season, Navy swimmers are the No. 1 seeds in a total of eight events. Those Mids ranked first in multiple events are Kevin Mukri (Sr., Silver Spring, Md.) in both backstroke events, Adam Meyer (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) in the individual medley events and Cody Reeb (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) in both distance freestyle events.

Additionally, Kevin Kysiak (Jr., Western Springs, Ill.) is the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, as is Alex Oldenkamp (So., Coppell, Texas) in the 50 freestyle.

Navy also returns Kevin Teague (Sr., Lexington, Ky.), the top-seeded diver on both boards who is attempting to win the two events for the fourth-straight year.

Other Mids who return after winning an individual event title at the championship are Mukri, winner of the 200 backstroke in 2004 and '05, Danny Flemming (Jr., Loganville, Ga.), who won the 500 free in '06, David Guthmann (So., Waxhaw, N.C.), the '06 champion in the 1650 freestyle and last year's Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Meet recipient, and Tyler Hill (Jr., Houston, Texas), the '06 200 fly titlist.

Navy Aims For Patriot League Championship This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men’s track & field team will look to claim its third Patriot League Championship over the last-four seasons when it heads up to Army’s Gillis Field House for this season’s indoor league championship. The action will commence with the heptathlon on Friday and conclude on Sunday afternoon.

The Midshipmen, who finished second at last year’s league championship, were picked second in the preseason poll behind defending Patriot League champion Army. The Mids finished the regular season with a 6-1 mark, including a 95-86, N-Star win over the Black Knights in West Point two weeks ago. Last weekend at the Iowa State Classic, Navy provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in two events and broke two school records.

Highlighting Navy’s 800-meter run contingent that ranks 1-2-3 in the Patriot League this season is junior Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.). Last Saturday at Iowa State, Harris ran the 800 meters in 1:48.46, a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, a school record and the third-fastest time in the nation this year. He owns the top-three indoor 800-meter run times in program history and became the first Navy runner to break the 1:50.00 in school history. Harris, last year’s Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet, also owns the top time among league runners in the 500-meter run. He crossed the finish line in less than 1:03.00 during both efforts this season and set the league championship record with a 1:04.15 clocking last year.

Recording a pair of top-10 800-meter run times in school history this year is junior Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.). Last weekend, Meekins posted the seventh-fastest time in program history with a 1:51.48 showing, ranking only behind Harris in the league this season. He has placed second at the Patriot League Championship in each of his first-two seasons with Navy. In addition to the 800-meter run, he picked up first-team all-league honors with Harris, junior William Ricks (Sussex, Va.) and senior Cameron Lindsay (Kernersville, N.C.) in the 4x400-meter relay in 2006. Last weekend, those four runners teamed up to break a 27-year-old record in the 4x400-meter relay by more than a second with a time of 3:12.07.

Harris, Ricks, junior Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas) and junior Jeff Sarchione (Alliance, Ohio) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with a time of 9:41.71. Their effort ranks at the top of the Patriot League, third in the program’s all-time record books and fifth in the country this year.

Ricks will also be looking to defend his league title in the 400-meter run this season. At last year’s championship, he led the way with a 49.01-second clocking. Last weekend, he posted a season-best time of 49.18 seconds, only 0.01-second behind Lindsay’s team-best time during the same meet. Lindsay also races in the 500-meter event, where he holds the league’s fourth-fastest time of 1:04.19, which he set at the Penn State National Open.

Sarchione holds the team’s top times in the 1,000-meter and mile run events this season, ranking among the Patriot League’s top-four runners. Sarchione tops the league with his 2:25.93 showing in the 1,000-meter run at the Penn State National Open and places fourth in mile run with his 4:08.21 clocking last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.

Navy has a pair of runners that rank among the top 10 in the Patriot League in two distance events. Sophomore Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.) raced to a time of 8:23.32 in the 3,000-meter run last weekend for the fourth-best time in the league, while his mile-run performance of 4:11.69 at Army ranks eighth. Junior John Kress (Colorado Springs, Colo.) owns the second-best 5,000-meter run time with a 14:37.61 showing and holds the league’s ninth-best time in the 3,00-meter run with an 8:28.16 clocking.

Junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai’i) seeks to provide the Midshipmen with a scoring punch in several events this weekend. Belany tied the program’s 10th-fastest 60-meter hurdles time with an 8.28-second showing at the Penn State National Open. One week later at Army, he soared 23’7-1/2” (7.20 meters) for the league’s third-best mark on the year. At last year’s Patriot League Championship, he accumulated 4,682 points in the heptathlon to place third.

The field events are also shaping up to be a strong area for the Mids, as they bring back a pair of two-time, defending league champions. Junior Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) has won the triple jump five times this year and owns the top distance in the league this year. He posted a distance of 48’11-1/2” (14.92 meters) last week and owns six IC4A-qualifying efforts in seven meets. Last year, he earned first-team all-league distinction with his 45’11-3/4” (14.01 meters) performance.

Senior Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) won the high jump at the 2005 and ’06 league championships and will battle with teammate Cole Herron (Sanger, Calif.) for the top spot in 2007. White cleared 6’10-3/4” (2.10 meters) in Navy’s Four-Team Meet one month ago for the top-height in the Patriot League, while Herron’s 6’9-3/4” (2.08 meters) last weekend ranks second.

Junior thrower Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) has won the shot put in each of his four meets this year and enters the weekend with the top mark in the Patriot League. He uncorked a toss of 55’3/4” (16.78 meters) one month ago and has thrown further than 53’ (16.15 meters) all-four times.

Following the Patriot League Championship, the Midshipmen will head up to Boston to compete in the IC4A Championship on March 3-4. Navy has already qualified in 14 events this season, with a total of 24 entries. At last year’s IC4A Championship, the Mids placed ninth out of 51 scoring teams.

Navy Women's Swimming Team Aims to End Title Drought

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's swimming and diving team will look to end a four-year drought at the Patriot League Championship when the 2007 meet is held this week on the Bucknell campus in Lewisburg, Pa.

The three-day championship was originally slated to run Thursday through Saturday, but due to the weather conditions in the area the meet has been pushed back one day and will now run Friday through Sunday.

The last time Navy won the league crown was in 2002, with Bucknell winning each of the last four titles. The Mids have placed second, third, second and third, respectively, over the last four seasons.

"This is a very exciting time of year," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "The league meet will be a great challenge for our team. From the times posted throughout the league during the regular season, I can see up to four teams battling for the championship. We look for our upperclass to lead the way and focus the energy and excitement of all to challenge for the title."

The lone returning swimmers for Navy who have won an individual event at a past league meet are Aubra Thomas (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), who has totaled six titles in the two breaststroke events and 200 individual medley, and Kelly Zahalka (So., Richmond, Va.), winner of the 400 individual medley one year ago. Also back for the Mids are Julie Holland (Sr., Shrewsbury, Mass.), Rachel Gray (Jr., Latrobe, Pa.) and Kristin Lowd (Jr., High Point, N.C.) who, like Thomas, have been part of a victorious relay team at the championship.

Using times and scores posted during the regular season, a total of eight Mids are seeded either first or second in various events at the championship. Leading the way is Mallory Dietrich (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), who is seeded first in the 100 fly and both breaststroke events, as well as second in the 200 fly, and Zahalka, the No. 1 seed in the 200 fly and both individual medley races.

Thuy-Mi Dinh (Fr., Anaheim, Calif.) is seeded first in both sprint freestyle events, Tara Chapmon (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) is the No. 1 seed in the 200 free and the No. 2 seed in both distance freestyle events, and Jennie Spencer (So., Smithburg, W.Va.) is the top-seeded swimmer in the 200 back and the second-ranked swimmer in the 100 back.

Thomas, Navy's team captain, also is seeded second in in the 100 breast, as is Sarah Dorenkott (Fr., Hudson, Ohio) in the 100 freestyle.

Additionally, diver Katie Griffin (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is ranked first on the one meter and second on the three meter.

Swimmers are limited to competing in a maximum of three individual events at the championship.

Greg Sprink didn't receive any support for all-conference honors last season despite leading Navy in scoring and rebounding.
Mids to Compete at Patriot League Championship This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following its second consecutive undefeated regular season, the Navy women’s track & field team will travel to Army’s Gillis Field House for the 2007 Patriot League Championship this weekend. The action gets started on Friday with the pentathlon and will conclude on Sunday afternoon.

The Midshipmen finished the regular season with a 7-0 record, capped by their 107-73 victory over Army in West Point two weeks ago to capture the N-Star.

Navy was tabbed to finish second in the preseason poll after finishing third in last year’s league championship. The Mids have placed among the top-three schools in each of their 12 appearances at the Patriot League Championship. Navy’s last league title came in 2001, when it won the meet by 64 points over second-place Bucknell, who has won the last-five league crowns and was picked to repeat in the preseason poll.

The Mids enter the Patriot League Championship with six of the top marks this year among league members.

Leading the league in two categories and ranking third in another is senior team captain Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.). Andrews tied the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.72-second showing at Army two weeks ago. The two-time, defending league champion in the hurdles set a Patriot League Championship record last year with an 8.05-second showing in the 55-meter hurdles. The Navy senior also owns the league’s top distance in the long jump with an 18’8-3/4” (5.71 meters) against the Black Knights. Andrews ranks third among the league in the pole vault with her 12’3-1/2” (3.75 meters) clearance one month ago. She earned second-team all-league honors last season in the pole vault with a similar height.

Navy’s top performer in both the pole vault and high jump this season comes from junior Jacquelyn Charnigo (Medina, Ohio). Charnigo ranks second in the league with her height of 12’5-1/2” (3.80 meters) at the Patriot Games. Her effort tied the ninth-highest clearance in program history, along with Andrews’ performance at the 2005 ECAC Championship. Charnigo also enters the weekend with the best height in the high jump, passing over the 5’6” (1.68 meters) bar one month ago, tying the third-best showing in school history.

Senior Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.) has etched her name into the record books in two events this season. Forsythe broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash two weeks ago against Army with a 7.59-second showing that is the fastest time in the Patriot League this year. During the same meet, she registered the fourth-best time in program history, third in the league this season, with a time of 25.34 seconds.

In her first appearance of the season two weeks ago, senior Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:06.23. At last year’s league championship, she won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:10.38 and placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a 10:07.03 clocking.

Two Navy runners head up to West Point ranked among the league’s top-six runners in both the 1,000-meter and 800-meter runs. Junior Vicki Moore (Burke, Va.) qualified for the ECAC Championship in the 1,000-meter run with the league’s top time of 2:56.44 at Army. Two weeks prior to her effort against the Black Knights, she ran the 800-meter run in 2:16.41, the third-quickest clocking in the league. Last year, she finished fourth in the 1,000-meter run at the Patriot League Championship with a showing of 2:58.22.

Classmate Stefanie Peskosky (Charlotte, N.C.) completed the 1,000-meter run in 3:00.01 at the Patriot Games for the fourth-best time in the Patriot League heading into the weekend. Two weeks ago at Army, she dropped down to the 800-meter run, where she posted a time of 2:17.45, which places her sixth among league members.

Navy’s 4x800-meter relay time of 9:27.06 at the Patriot Games ranks first in the league, while its distance medley relay’s 12:41.60 effort at the UMES Invitational ranks third. The Midshipmen won the distance medley relay last year, as sophomore Maureen Dooley (Durham, Conn.), junior Lauren Burmeister (Brownsdale, Minn.), Moore and senior Erin Demchko (Pearl River, N.Y.) teamed up for a 12:06.28 clocking.

After this weekend’s Patriot League Championship, the Midshipmen will head to Boston to compete at the ECAC Championship on March 3-4. Navy has qualified in five events with a total of six entries this season. Last year, the Mids finished 19th out of 50 scoring teams at the ECAC Championship.

Navy Tennis at Home Saturday for Two Matches

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A four-week homestand for the Navy tennis team will come to a close Saturday when the Mids play host to St. Joseph's and George Mason Saturday at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club. Navy's match against the Hawks is slated to begin at 12 Noon, with the match against the Patriots to follow to 5 p.m.

"St. Joe's is a tough, well-coached opponent," said Navy head coach John Officer. "They have a top number one player in Chris Chirico who is very capable. For us, Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) is playing very well and looks forward to this match. We will need to outwork our opponents from the first point to be successful."

Navy saw its record fall to 3-3 on the season with a 6-1 loss to Maryland last Saturday afternoon. The Mids totaled a pair of victories on the day against the Terrapins, with Jason Hill (Marietta, Ga.) posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 2 singles and the doubles team of Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.) and Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) recording an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.

Four of the six singles matches had sets decided by a tiebreaker, with two of the matches extended to a third set.

St. Joseph's has posted a 2-2 record on the season. St. Joseph assistant coach Gene Miller is a former assistant at Navy under Officer.

Navy posted a 6-1 victory over St. Joseph's last season in Annapolis. After narrowly winning the doubles point thanks to a 9-7 victory at the No. 1 flight by Brandon Carter and Nelms over Phil Bayliss and A.J. Garabedian, Navy fought its way to a trio of straight-set singles victories by Nelms (No. 1), Carter (No. 4) and Johnny Waters (No. 6) (So., Papillion, Neb.).

As is the case again this year, Navy faced George Mason last year following its match against the Hawks. The Mids posted a 5-0 victory over the Patriots and did not drop a set in any of the matches.

The Patriots are winless through their opening five matches of the 2007 spring season.

Following Saturday's matches, Navy will take to the road for eight matches over the next four weeks. Navy's ensuing home match will be March 24 against Colgate.

Crusaders Hold Off Navy Rally in Women's Hoops

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy sliced a 12-point deficit with five minutes to play down to just four points, but Holy Cross was able to hold off the Mids and a record-setting night by Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) to post an 85-80 victory, Tuesday night in Alumni Hall.

Navy dropped its second-straight game to fall to 10-15 on the season and 4-7 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross snapped a two-game skid and improved to 10-16 on the year and 5-6 within the league.

"It's tough to figure out," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "We have let ourselves down with our defense the last two games. For the longest time it was our defense that we could count on, but now it is our concern. To shoot as well as we did, make 10 three-point field goals and turn the ball over just 11 times is great, but we gave up too many easy buckets on defense."

Holy Cross jumped out to a 16-8 lead seven minutes into the game, but Navy soon pulled to within two points at 23-21 on a three-point field goal from Margaret Knap (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) with 7:20 left in the half. From there, Brittany O'Dell quickly scored the next eight points as the Crusaders built a 10-point lead, then she added another pair of three-pointers over the remainder of the half to help Holy Cross take a 43-30 advantage at intermission.

O'Dell totaled 17 points in the first half thanks to her connecting on 5-of-7 attempts from behind the three-point.

Navy wasn't able to pull any closer than seven points for most of the second half, but Holy Cross never saw its lead grow beyond 12 points.

The margin was 12 points after O'Dell made a pair of free throws with five minutes to play, but Navy quickly cut the gap down to four points with 2:23 remaining. The run began with a free throw from Lindi Conner (Jr., Kingman, Kan.) then, after a pair of free throws from Briana McFadden pushed the Holy Cross margin back to 11 points, Knap drilled another trey to pull the Mids to within eight points. O'Dell turned the ball over and Meyer was soon fouled. She made the first attempt and missed the second, but grabbed the errant carom. The possession ended successfully as Knap scored a field goal from inside of the lane to make the score 78-73 with 2:52 left to play.

The Crusaders turned the ball over again and fouled Meyer as she was driving to the basket. This time she missed the first attempt but made the second to bring the Mids to within four points.

After the teams traded field goals on their next respective possessions, the Mids thought they had forced another turnover when Conner stole the ball from Brittany Keil at halfcourt. Conner, however, was ruled to half stepped into the backcourt with the ball and, after a discussion by the officials, the ball was awarded to Holy Cross who proceeded to score on a layup from McFadden with 1:48 remaining.

Navy turned the ball over on its next time down the floor, but Holy Cross missed a pair of shots on its next possession and Betsy Burnett (Sr., New Holstein, Wis.) rolled in a layup for Navy with 49 seconds left to again make it a four-point game at 82-78.

Utilizing a press, Kalen Kropa (So., Reidsville, N.C.) appeared to have successfully cut off McFadden from driving down the side of the court, but she was called for a blocking foul and McFadden made both free throw attempts. The Mids rushed the ball down the court and Meyer made a jumper with 26 seconds remaining to again cut the deficit down to four points at 84-80.

The Mids fouled Ashley McLaughlin, who went to the foul line where she converted one of two free throws to make it a five-point game with 23 seconds remaining. Navy missed a pair of field goal attempts and one free throw attempt over the closing seconds to end the furious rally.

Meyer dominated the second half, scoring 21 of Navy's 50 points after halftime on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, 3-of-6 shooting from behind the three-point line and a 2-of-4 effort from the foul line. Meyer finished the game with 33 points to set a new career-high and break the record for the most points scored by a Mid in a Patriot League game.

Meyer previously scored 32 points in an overtime game last year against American to share the record with Yolanda Ray's 32-point night against Lafayette in 1993.

Both offenses played very well in the game to quickly leave behind the memory of the 49-39 contest played a few weeks ago in Worcester (won by Holy Cross). Navy was 10-of-19 from behind the three-point line (62.5%) this evening, while Holy Cross made 9-of-18 attempts (50%) from long range. Navy totaled 31 field goals in the game to 26 for Holy Cross, but the Crusaders made 24-of-27 attempts from the foul line while Navy was just 8-of-13 from the charity stripe.

The Crusaders also held a 36-29 advantage over the Mids on the glass.

Meyer, who also led Navy with seven rebounds in the game, was joined in double figures on the night for Navy by Knap with 18 points and Kate Hobbs (Sr., Wexford, Pa.) with 13.

O'Dell finished with 24 points to lead four Holy Cross players in double figures.

Navy will next be in action Sunday when the Mids play host to Army in the annual Star Game between the service academies. The game tips at 1 p.m. and can be seen nationally on CSTV.

Navy Travels to West Coast for All-Academy Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy gymnastics team (7-6) will compete in the final meet of a four-meet road swing when it travels to San Francisco for the All-Academy Championship against Air Force (2-5) and Army (7-4) on Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. PST in Herbst Pavilion.

Despite eclipsing the 200-point mark last Saturday, the Midshipmen were defeated by Army, 207.9-200.45, in the Star Meet at West Point. The Mids and Black Knights also met each other during the West Point Open, where the hosts outscored Navy, 197.75-190.25. In addition to this weekend’s action, Navy and Army will face each other one more time at the ECAC/EIGL Championship in March. This Saturday’s meet will be the lone meeting between Navy and Air Force in the gym this season.

At last year’s All-Academy Championship in Aliso Viejo, Calif., Army squeezed past Navy to capture its sixth-consecutive title. The Black Knights totaled 200.75 points, followed by Navy’s 200.7 points and Air Force’s 179.475 points. The Midshipmen are looking to capture their first All-Academy Championship since the annual event began in 2000.

Navy junior all-around gymnast Christopher Tam (Draper, Utah) will look to lead the Mids in multiple disciplines on Saturday. Tam, the 20th-ranked all-around gymnast in the country, has scored an 8.0 or higher in four of the six events three times this year. The all-around is shaping up to be an interesting competition between Tam and Army’s Mike Assenmacher, ranked 13th nationally. Tam topped Assenmacher at the West Point Open, but the Army gymnast bounced back to claim the all-around title last weekend.

One of the most tightly contested events of the day could come on the still rings, where there’s less than two-tenths of a point separating each team’s top performer’s average. Tam leads the Midshipmen with an average score of 8.387, while Army’s Joseph Baumann owns an 8.5-point average and Air Force’s Jacob Schonig has averaged 8.317 points this season.

Navy sophomore Joseph Atzenbeck (Broomfield, Colo.) scored above 8.0 in three events last weekend and leads the team in two disciplines this year. Atzenbeck recorded an 8.75 on the parallel bars last weekend during his first action in the event this season, while scoring 8.7 points on the high bar and 8.35 points on the pommel horse. He ranks 23rd nationally on the parallel bars (8.750) and 27th on the high bar (8.512) this year.

Junior Brandon Cook (Longmont, Colo.) holds Navy’s highest scoring average in both the floor exercise and vault events. Cook has scored an 8.5 or high in all four meets, posting an 8.75 average mark on the year. His ranking score is less than five-hundredths of a point lower than Assenmacher’s average performance in 2007. On the vault, Cook owns an 8.217-point average in three attempts in the discipline this season.

Following this weekend’s meet, the Midshipmen will return to Annapolis to host their final home meet of the year against James Madison next Saturday in Macdonough Hall.

Holy Cross Breezes Past Navy, 68-40

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Tim Clifford scored a career-high 33 points and Navy shot just 25.0 percent from the field as Holy Cross ended Navy's two-game winning streak with a 68-40 victory on Thursday afternoon. The loss was Navy's second worst Patriot League home loss in school history and drops the Mids to 13-13 overall and 3-8 in Patriot League play. Holy Cross improved to 20-7 and 11-1.

"You can talk about our youth and exams and the change in gametime. You can list a million facts about this game, but we have never let them become excuses," said Navy head coach Billy Lange. "There is no excuse worth talking about. We just didn't do what we were supposed to do. I haven't been disappointed in a game yet this year, because I always felt we had positives in every game. There were no positives in this game. I am very disappointed with our energy and lack of effort today."

Holy Cross jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back. The lead quickly expanded to 28-6 with 5:19 to play in the first half, before Navy trimmed the margin to 28-13, fueled by two Bryce Brigham three-pointers. However, Holy Cross closed the half with a 36-18 advantage.

The Crusaders' lead never got below 20 in the 14:30 of the contest and Holy Cross would take its biggest lead of the game with 58 seconds left at 68-37. A late three-pointer by Derek Young allowed Navy to avoid its worst Patriot League home loss ever.

Clifford's 33 points were the most for a Navy opponent since Brown's Earl Hunt scored 35 points on Jan. 5, 2002.

"We had the same gameplan that we played with up there," said Lange. Clifford had six points and four turnovers in the team's first meeting. "The game started and it looked like we didn't practice at all. He did whatever he wanted. I don't know if we were intimidated or not, but this was not the same basketball team that we had the last two games."

Navy, meanwhile, could find no rhythm on offense, converting on just 12-of-48 shots from the field. Navy was just 5-of-23 from inside the three-point arc. The 25.0 percent from the field tied for the fourth lowest percentage in school history and the 12 field goals made equaled the fewest in school history. Navy was forced into a season-high 24 turnovers and was outrebounded 40-29. Navy's bench scored 25 points to just 15 for the starters and T.J. Topercer was Navy's top scorer with eight points.

"I don't want to discredit Holy Cross either," said Lange. "Their defense was outstanding. It's very hard to simulate their athleticism, size and strength. We knew how we wanted to attack it. We just didn't execute it."

The Mids host Army at Alumni Hall on Saturday in the annual Star Game at 1:00 pm in a game televised by CBS.

"It's a big game, but so was today's," said Lange. "Every game late in the year is big. You want to go into the Army game playing well. We obviously have a little bit of work to do for Saturday. I expect a much-better effort on Saturday."
