17 Navy Travels to Army for Annual Wrestling Dual

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The 17th-ranked Navy wrestling team will look to stretch its winning streak to seven in a row against Army when the two programs battle for the “Star” Sunday afternoon in West Point, N.Y. Action is set to get underway at 4:00 p.m. and will be shown tape-delayed that evening (8:00 pm) on ESPNU.

“This is always a big match and has a storied history,” said seventh-year Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “Truth be told, we want to win all of our matches and the Army-Navy match happens to fall in at the time that we are preparing for the EIWA Championship. It’s important that we hit our stride at this time of the year because we want to perform well at the EIWA Championship and qualify as many guys as we can for the NCAA Championship.

“We had the opportunity to wrestle some of the Army guys at the All-Academy Championship just a few weeks ago and I think any time you have the chance to wrestle someone earlier in the year, you are better off. We are ready to go.”

Army and Navy are on tap to meet one another in four sports this weekend — Rifle (Sat., 8:00 am, West Point), Men’s Basketball (Sat., 1:00 pm, Annapolis), Women’s Basketball (Sun., 1:00 pm, Annapolis), Wrestling (Sun., 4:00 pm, West Point) — with each factoring into the annual Star Series. Navy holds a 12-5 record against the Black Knights this year, including a 10-3 advantage in Star competitions. The Mids need just two more wins to clinch their 11-straight Star Series win.

Navy owns a 40-5-5 series advantage on the mat against the Black Knights, winning six in a row by a combined 67 points (131-64). Dating back to the 1963 campaign, the Midshipmen have produced a 38-1-5 record over 44 matches with their lone setback a 19-12 loss at West Point in 1997. Navy owns a 17-4-2 advantage in matches held at West Point, winning four in a row.

Only four wrestlers on Navy’s list of probables competed in last year’s dual match, including 16th-ranked Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) who defeated Frankie Baughan (now at 141 pounds) by technical fall at 133 pounds to give the Midshipmen an early 5-0 lead. Baker, who owns a 15-4 record this year, has never lost to an Army foe. In fact, Baker swept Baughan a year ago with matches at the All-Academy Championship, the annual dual and the EIWA Championship. Because of injury, Baker did not compete in the All-Academy Championship two weeks ago, but will likely face sophomore William Simpson (22-12 / 7-6 dual), who won the All-Academy title.

Team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) faced Army’s Brian Rowan four times a year ago, splitting those four matches and featuring a 7-2 win in Navy’s dual victory. Jarred, who is 28-9 in his senior campaign, has won five in a row, including his three matches at the All-Academy Championship where he claimed the 157-pound title. Jarred is on tap to face junior Christian Snook (22-13 / 8-3 dual) who did not place at the All-Academy Championship.

Junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) is 2-1 against the Black Knights, splitting his dual competition. As a sophomore, he dropped a heartbreaker to Gabriel Lucero, 14-11, however last February Stolpinski outlasted Chad Marzec, 5-3, in sudden victory. Two weeks later, he defeated Marzec again, 6-4, at the EIWA Championship. Stolpinski, who is ranked12th in the country, did not face an Army wrestler en route to winning his third-consecutive All-Academy crown, but will likely face senior Brent Smith (27-11 / 7-1 dual) who placed fourth.

Stolpinski owns the second-longest winning streak on the team with nine straight with six of those being bonus-point victories. A win on Sunday would put him in a three-way tie for 15th on Navy’s single-season wins list with 34, while pushing his career win total to 89 and a tie with Mike Bigrigg (1998-02) for 15th on the the Mids’ career wins list.

Like Stolpinski, senior 125-pounder Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) has split his dual matches against Army. As a sophomore, Usztics hammered Travis Featherstone, 11-4, but dropped a tough 5-4 decision to William Simpson last year. Usztics, who owns a 4-4 record against the Black Knights, dropped a 10-6 decision to Army junior Fernando Martinez (21-6 / 4-1 dual) at this year’s All-Academy Championship. Usztics has turned in a 26-12 record this year and has won five of his last six matches.

Senior 184-pounder Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) is one of six Navy probables who did not compete in last year’s dual, but like Baker, he also owns a flawless record against the Black Knights. Miranda, however, will be wrestling in the Army-Navy dual for the first time in his career. Miranda beat Army freshman Richard Starks, 13-8, in the championship bout of the All-Academy Championship to claim the title. Miranda, who is 28-9 this season, heads into Sunday’s match having won eight-straight matches.

Junior eighth-ranked heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) watched his predecessor Tanner Garret defeat Michael Sprigg at last year’s Army-Navy dual. Prendergast has taken over the reigns and hasn’t skipped a beat, producing a 31-5 record. The first-year starter has won 12-consecutive matches with eight ending in a fall. His 15 pins this season are tied as the third most in program history and the most since Scott Kelly won 15 matches by fall in 1987-88. Prendergast will face Army junior Nathan Thobaben (15-4 / 4-2 dual) for the second time in his career. The two battled at last year’s McDaniel Duals with Thobaben earning the 11-4 win.

Seniors Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) and John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) have competed in an Army-Navy dual and both enter Sunday’s match-up with a bitter taste in their mouth. Canterbury, who is 1-3 against Army foes, dropped an 8-2 decision to Bernard Gardner in the 2004 Star Match, while 149-pounder Cox owns a 1-1 mark in dual competition against Army, dropping the 2005 battle to third-ranked Phillip Simpson, 12-1. Canterbury lost a hard-fought 8-6 battle Army’s Matt Kyler in this year’s 141-pound championship match at the All-Academy Championship, while Cox has not faced an Army opponent this season.

Junior 165-pounder Justin Jacobs (LeRoy, Mich.) and sophomore 197-pounder Tyler Moyer (Bremerton, Wash.) will also compete in their first Army-Navy Star Match. Jacobs, who owns a 13-14 record, dropped a 3-0 decision to Army’s Brian Rowan in the championship bout of the All-Academy Tournament on Feb. 3, while Moyer’s lone action against an Army foe was at last year’s McDaniel Duals where he handed Josh Ewing an 11-6 defeat.

Army, who is ranked sixth in the EIWA, enters Sunday’s Star Match owning a 10-5 record, including a 6-2 mark in EIWA action. The Black Knights, who like Navy have beaten Bucknell, East Stroudsburg, Rutgers and Brown, are coming off a 28-6 loss at Lehigh last Saturday. Army’s biggest win of the season was a 21-13 decision over then 25th-ranked Columbia on Jan. 31 in West Point. Five Black Knights are among the top-6 EIWA rankings, including freshman 141-pounder Matt Kyler who stands No. 3. Kyler earned an 8-6 decision over Navy’s Brad Canterbury at the All-Academy Championship two weeks ago to win the individual title.

It took Holy Cross two days to get to Annapolis for yesterday's rescheduled game against Navy. It took the Crusaders all of three minutes to seize control and beat the Midshipmen for the 17th consecutive time.

Showing no ill effects from a trip that included two canceled flights, an overnight stay near the Providence, R.I., airport and a 5 1/2 -hour train ride to Baltimore, the Crusaders scored the first nine points and led by 22 in the first half en route to a 68-40 victory over Navy before an announced crowd of 1,414 at Alumni Hall....

It took Holy Cross more than 24 hours to make the trip to Annapolis. When they got there, the Crusaders had to wait another 21 hours to play their scheduled game, which was postponed because of their winter storm-related travel woes. It took the Crusaders considerably less time to dispatch the Midshipmen once they finally took the court.

Behind a career effort from center Tim Clifford, the Crusaders jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 68-40 win in a late-afternoon game in Alumni Hall....

Navy to Host Iona and Delaware State in Home-Opening Weekend
After going 2-1 at Florida A&M last weekend to open its 112th season, the Navy baseball team will host Iona and Delaware State on Saturday through Monday to begin its home slate at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. The Mids will take on the Gaels in a doubleheader on Saturday and finish their series off with a single game on Sunday. Navy and Delaware State will take the field for a 2 p.m. first pitch on Monday.

Scouting Iona
In his first season as head coach at Iona, Pat Carey and the Gaels finished the 2006 season with a 12-42 record, 8-18 in MAAC play. Junior infielder Allie Abbatiello hit .289 last season with three home runs and 25 RBIs to top a returning group that hit .257 as a team last year. On the mound, senior right-hander Nick Stanziani went 3-4 with a team-best 5.64 ERA in 59.0 innings of work, walking only 15 and fanning 30.

Navy and Iona to Meet for First Time
Navy and Iona will meet on the baseball field for the first time this weekend when the Midshipmen host the Gaels in Annapolis on Saturday and Sunday. Despite having never played each other prior to this upcoming weekend, the coaching staffs of both teams are quite familiar with one another.
Iona head coach Pat Carey was recruited by then Providence head coach and current Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos following his time at Rockland Community College (N.Y.) in 1996. Kostacopoulos moved on to Maine prior to the start of the 1997 season, but Carey (shortstop) and current Navy assistant coach Scott Friedholm (catcher) played together at Providence during the 1997 and `98 seasons.

Navy All-Time Against the MAAC The Midshipmen own an all-time mark of 7-2 against teams affiliated with the MAAC, good for a .778 winning percentage. Navy has played Fairfield (2-0), Rider (2-2) and Siena (3-0) during its 112-year program history. The Midshipmen have not met Canisius, Iona, Le Moyne, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Saint Peter's on the baseball diamond.

Navy All-Time vs. New York Teams The Navy baseball team owns an all-time record of 230-153-3 (.600) against current Division I baseball teams from the state of New York. The Midshipmen have played Albany (0-1), Army (99-80), Buffalo (0-3), Columbia (57-21-2), Cornell (47-26), Fordham (14-16), Long Island-Brooklyn (1-0), New York University (8-3), St. Francis (1-1), St. John's (0-1-1), Siena (3-0) and Wagner (0-1).

Scouting Delaware State Delaware State enters the weekend with an 0-4 record and will play Buffalo this weekend before making the trip west to Annapolis. Junior outfielder Jarrett Bibb leads the team with a 3.57 batting average, while junior right-handed pitcher Tony Tevis owns a team-best 2.40 ERA on the year.

Last Year Against Delaware State Navy and Delaware State met each other on April 19 last season in Annapolis, with the Midshipmen coming away with a 15-7 win. Navy pounded out 16 hits in the win, seven of which went for doubles. Ryan McGinn belted a pair of doubles and drove in four runs as 10 Mids recorded a hit on the afternoon. Kevin Heasley picked up the win, scattering two hits and two unearned runs with no walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

Navy All-Time Against the MEAC The Midshipmen own an all-time mark of 25-7-1 against teams affiliated with the MEAC, good for a .773 winning percentage. Navy has played Coppin State (6-3-1), Delaware State (6-1), Florida A&M (5-1) and UMES (8-2) during its 112-year history. The Midshipmen have not met Bethune-Cookman, Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T on the baseball diamond.

Navy All-Time vs. Delaware Teams The Navy baseball team owns an all-time record of 27-10 (.730) against current Division I baseball teams from the state of Delaware. The Midshipmen have played Delaware (21-9) and Delaware State (6-1) in their 112-year program history.

Home Games a Plenty in 2007 This weekend's action at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium will mark the start of a 32-game home slate for the Midshipmen in 2007. Weather permitting, the 32 home games would break the school record of 28 home contests set last season.

Home Sweet Home Since the 1946 season, Navy has posted a record of 735-280-15 (.721) at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Last season, the Midshipmen posted a 16-11-1 (.589) mark on their home field.

February Success Under Kosty The Midshipmen have enjoyed significant success under head coach Paul Kostacopoulos in the month of February over his first-two seasons at the helm. Kostacopoulos and the Mids own a 10-3-1 (.750) mark in the month of February. Last season, Navy posted an 8-2-1 (.773) record in the second calendar month, marking the most wins in the month of February in school history.

Allowing Only One Base at a Time The Navy pitching staff has not allowed an extra-base hit in its 26.0 innings of work this season. The last extra-base hit allowed by a Midshipmen pitcher came in the first inning of their 2006 season finale against Coppin State, dating back 33.0 innings ago.

Don't Leave Me Hanging Navy has left 37 runners on base over its first-three games in 2007. Of those 37 runners stranded, 22 were in scoring position. The Midshipmen have left the bases loaded on five occasions this year.

Taking One for the Team The Midshipmen were hit by a pitch nine times during their season-opening series at Florida A&M last weekend. Last year, Navy was plunked 51 times.

Hollins Moving Up Stolen Base List Junior center fielder Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) needs only one stolen base to move into a tie for 10th place on the career stolen base list with Jared Munde (2003-06). Hollins, who has swiped 32 bases over his first two-plus seasons in Annapolis, needs only two more stolen bases to move into a tie for eighth place with Joe Bellino (1959-61) and Sam Mowery (1989-91).

Second-Youngest Team in Patriot League The 2007 Navy baseball team ranks as the second-youngest team in the Patriot League this season, highlighted by its 16 freshmen and only five seniors. Only Lehigh, last year's league champion, welcomes more new faces this year, as nearly half (17-of-35) of its team is comprised of freshmen.

Freshmen Making Immediate Impact With 16 freshmen on the 2007 roster, Navy is counting on its freshman class to make an immediate impact. Freshmen have accounted for more than 44 percent of the starting lineup this season, while a freshman has been on the mound in 33 percent of Navy's action this year.

Turning the Ship Around In just his first season as a head coach with Navy, Paul Kostacopoulos helped direct the baseball team to a 20-win improvement over its 2005 win-total. The 2006 squad finished the year with a 32-21-1 mark compared to its 12-33-1 record the year before. The 20-win jump over the previous year's total is the highest in school history and tied the Patriot League record with the 2004 Army Black Knights. Those changes also reflected in the statistics, as Navy was the only Division I team in the nation (289 teams) to drop more than two runs in its ERA and raise its batting average more than 40 points. The Midshipmen trimmed their ERA by 2.18 runs (4.20 in '06 vs. 6.38 in '05), representing the fifth-largest drop in the nation and the best improvement in school history. The Mids upped their batting average 46 points (.293 in '06 vs. .247 in '05), ranking fifth in the country for the largest increase and fourth in school history.

Non-League Success in `06
Navy set a school record for the most non-league wins in program during the 2006 season, recording a 24-9-1 (.721) mark away from Patriot League action. The 2006 Midshipmen smashed the previous record of 18 non-league wins during the 1983 campaign.
The Midshipmen made the most of their games prior to Patriot League play last year, registering a 19-8-1 (.696) record before their league-opening series against Holy Cross. The 19 pre-league wins also set a program record and were nearly double the previous mark of 10 wins before league action during the 1994 slate.

Navy's History of Success in the Patriot League
Despite joining the Patriot League two years after it began competing in baseball, Navy has won more league postseason and regular season titles than any other team in league history. The Midshipmen, who joined the league in 1993, have won five Patriot League titles and been crowned regular season champions on eight occasions. Navy's all-time winning percentage of .596 (168-114) in Patriot League action ranks second among teams currently affiliated with the league.

Navy Tabbed Second in Patriot League Preseason Poll
The Navy baseball team has been picked to tie for second place in the 2007 Patriot League Preseason Poll, voted on by each school's head coach and sports information contact. Five of the six teams in the Patriot League received a first-place vote in the poll.
For the third-consecutive year, Army (30-20-1, 10-10 PL/fourth) has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league with seven first-place ballots and 46 points.
Lafayette (27-24, 11-9 PL/third) and Navy (32-21-1, 8-12 PL/fifth) each accumulated 34 points to tie for second, as the Leopards received two first-place votes and the Midshipmen collected one.
Bucknell (24-24, 13-7 PL/tied-first) tallied 30 points and a first-place vote, while defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (28-28, 13-7 PL/tied-first) came in fifth with 24 points and one first-place ballot and Holy Cross (16-26-1, 5-15 PL/sixth) rounds out the league with 12 points.
In his first season at Annapolis last year, head coach Paul Kostacopoulos guided the Mids to a 20-win improvement over their 2005 win-total, marking the largest increase in school history. Navy returns 13 letterwinners from a 2006 squad that was the only team in Division I baseball to boost its team batting average more than 40 points and trim its ERA by more than two runs.

Buddy Custer Added to Coaching Staff
Navy baseball head coach Paul Kostacopoulos and the coaching staff announced the addition of Buddy Custer as a volunteer assistant coach during this past summer.
A native of Hatfield, Pa., Custer began his coaching career in the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Villanova for one season in 1992, after which he coached at C.W. Post in the fall of 1992 and assisted at Fordham from 1993-94.

Navy, which has won four Star Games in a row and owns a 65-40 series lead over the Black Knights, are coming off a poor performance in a Thursday afternoon contest against Patriot League-leader Holy Cross. The Mids were outscored 28-6 to start the game and never found their rhythm, dropping a 68-40 decision to Holy Cross. The loss drops Navy to 13-13 overall and 3-8 in the Patriot League. Surprisingly enough, Navy still controls its own fate for the fourth and final home Patriot League quarterfinal.

Navy is paced by junior All-Patriot League candidate Greg Sprink, who saw a six-game double-figure scoring streak end on Thursday. Sprink averages 16.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg and has made 57 three-pointers in just 26 games. No other player averages more than 8.8 points per game and eight players in all average at least 3.5 ppg.

Army, meanwhile, enters the contest on a six-game losing streak, but still hold a 13-13 overall record and a 3-8 overall mark. The Black Knights' last win was a 53-50 thriller in West Point over Navy. Army is looking for its first series sweep of the Mids since the 1991-92 season.

Army is led by a pair of guards in Jerell Brown and Matt Bell. The duo is combining to average 31.6 ppg and has made 111 of the team's 158 three-pointers this year. Freshman Chris Walker is next in line with a 6.0 ppg average. Head coach Jim Crews has gotten solid production out of sophomore Doug Williams recently. Williams scored 13 points with 11 rebounds Wednesday against American.

Blame it on the postponement and subsequent afternoon start. Credit it to the fact Holy Cross has owned Navy during this decade.

Whatever the reason, the Midshipmen were never in yesterday's game with the visiting Crusaders....

Someone who I respect in the college sports community recently told me that he wasn’t really fond of internet message boards. He did not elaborate on his point, but since I have the utmost respect for him, I immediately felt a little dirty for being such a fan of them, well, a fan of one in particular – the GoMids.com message board of course.

And recently, as most of you know, as a columnist/reporter I was able to break some pretty big news on GoMids.com. That’s right, you heard it here first about Kevin Ross being fired. Someone even on the Army message board wanted to know if this report was anywhere in the “mainstream media” because, I assume, he did not trust the information on this web site....

Navy men's basketball coach Billy Lange never likes suffering a loss like he did Thursday in a 68-40 loss to Holy Cross.

But if it were to happen, Lange said he prefers it happens in a week where the team has a short break between games so the players don't have time to dwell on it. Such is the case for Navy, which hosts Army today in the 106th meeting between the two service academies. The 1 p.m. game is the
