Navy Finishes Sixth at Men's EISL Swimming & Diving Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. - For the fourth time in the last five years, Navy finished in sixth-place finish at the nine-team Men's EISL Swimming & Diving Championship held this weekend at Princeton University. While Princeton claimed the team title with 1405 points, the Mids turned in their best point production (801.5) since finishing fourth at the 1999-00 EISL meet in which the Midshipmen scored 843 points.

"Overall we were very competitive in this traditionally strong meet," said Navy men's swimming coach Bill Roberts. "I was happy to see us raise our score to 801 and better our mark from a year ago (770)."

Navy senior Kevin Mukri (Silver Spring, Md.) swam a sensational meet over the course of four days that included three program records and two NCAA "B" cuts. In the 200-yard backstroke prelim, Mukri smashed the school record he already owned (1:47.70) with a 1:46.38, but bettered it in his swim in the finals where he placed second and finished with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:45.62.

"Kevin has worked very hard this year," said Roberts. "He always steps up when it matters the most."

Rookie Adam Meyer (Bethesda, Md.) won the "B" final of the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:04.26. Like Mukri, Meyer had an outstanding meet where for the second-straight week he was the top point producer among all freshmen.

Senior John Kennedy (Richmond, Va.) wrapped up his career by winning the "C" final of the 200-yard breaststroke with a personal-best time of 2:04.94 where he shaved almost two seconds off his preliminary time of 2:06.80.

Reflecting on Kennedy's commitment to the program, Roberts said, "John's performance tonight really captures what this team is all about."

Third-year standout Kevin Kysiak (Western Springs, Ill.) also swam in the 200-yard breaststroke where he placed 16th overall with a personal-best time of 2:05.33, his best time of the year.

Freshman Cody Reeb (St. Louis, Mo.) finished 10th in the 1650-yard freestyle improving upon his second-place time at last week's Patriot League Championship by nearly 10 seconds. Reeb finished the race in 15:44.92, the sixth-fastest time in program history.

Winning the "B" final in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth overall, junior Matthew Wood (Evergreen Park, Ill.) recorded a career-best time 45.55. He took off better than a second from his fifth-place finish (46.58) against Army earlier this year.

Navy senior Kevin Teague (Lexington, Ky.) finished the three-meter diving competition with a fourth-place score of 324.05, just 1.75 out of third place. Teammate Adam Niekras (Liverpool, N.Y.) placed 15th overall with a 280.80 mark.

The Eagles and Mids split their regular-season series, neither defeated Bucknell and both took a win from Army.

The other tie was between Lafayette and Lehigh, which both ended 5-9. Lafayette will play as the No. 6 seed and Lehigh as the No. 7 seed. Lafayette and Lehigh split their series, but the Leopards earned the higher seed due to their win over Bucknell.

Below are the game times and matchups for next weekend's Patriot League Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals and Semifinals which will take place in Annapolis, Md. at Navy's Alumni Hall.

Saturday, March 3

Navy Blanked by Missouri, 5-0

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Three Missouri pitchers combined to limit Navy to two hits as the Midshipmen were blanked, 5-0, in the final day of the Service Academy Spring Classic on Sunday at USA Stadium.

The loss snaps Navy’s seven-game winning streak and drops its record to 8-2 on the year. Missouri ended its three-game losing streak to improve its mark to 6-4 on the campaign.

Navy was held hitless over the first-7.2 innings of the contest before freshman catcher Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.) belted a double off the left field fence. Junior Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) produced Navy’s second hit on the afternoon with a single to right-center in the ninth.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, Missouri took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Aaron Senne delivered a two-out infield single to score Brock Bond.

The Tigers extended their lead to 4-0 in the sixth on a three-run home run to left off the bat of John McKee. The home run was the first allowed by Navy this season and the first in 129.2 innings, dating back to the Coppin State contest last year.

Navy junior starter Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.) pitched well for the Mids, but was tagged for the loss on Sunday. McCoy allowed five hits and four runs, all earned, with three walks and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. His record dropped to 1-2 on the year.

“Mark pitched great today,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “He was on and did a tremendous job locating his pitches. This is a top-20 team and he performed very well.”

The Midshipmen bullpen of Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.), Ridge Alkonis (Claremont, Calif.), Mark Foris (Maspeth, N.Y.), Daniel Kovalcik (Westwood, Mass.) and Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) combined for one-hit, one-run relief over the final-3.2 innings of the game.

“The bullpen did a fairly average job,” said Kostacopoulos. “We need strike throwers and our guys didn’t do that today, walking three and hitting two batters. Jonathan (Berkowitz) did a nice, efficient job in the ninth.”

Missouri ran wild on the base paths, as it swiped eight bases in as many attempts on the day. Evan Frey accounted for three of the stolen bases, while Bond swiped two bags.

“Obviously this is an area we need to work on,” stated Kostacopoulos. “We need to work on the release from the catchers and the pitchers have to do a better job holding runners on.”

The Midshipmen return to Annapolis to host Georgetown on Wednesday at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.navysports.com(.)

New Haven, Conn. - The Navy tennis team dropped its second-straight match to an Ivy League school Sunday, losing a 7-0 decision to Yale in New Haven, Conn. The setback for the Mids come one day after Navy lost a 7-0 match to Brown and drops Navy's record on the year to 5-5.

"We played two very good teams this weekend," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Brown won the Ivy League title last year and is nationally ranked this year, while Yale finished third in the Ivy's last year when they were nationally ranked. We had our hands full."

The Mids dropped all five of the singles matches, as well as the lone double match (worth two points) to the Bulldogs Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Navy Men's Basketball To Earn No. 7 Seed

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's basketball team finished the Patriot League regular season with a 4-10 record, tying for sixth in the league with Army. However, thanks to the league's tiebreaking procedures, the Mids will be the seventh seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. Navy will enter Wednesday's first round with a 14-15 overall record.

Navy will likely play No. 2 seed Bucknell, although official pairings won't be released until Monday morning. Bucknell and Holy Cross shared the regular-season title with a 13-1 league mark, with both team beating each other. However, Holy Cross will likely earn the No. 1 seed, thanks to a higher RPI. According to the league's published tiebreaker procedure, Monday's Collegiate Basketball News RPI report (located at RPIRatings.com) will be used to determine the top seed. As of Sunday morning, Holy Cross was ranked No. 69, while Bucknell was 97th.

Bucknell swept Navy this year and has won five meetings in a row against the Midshipmen. In the league opener on Jan. 6, Bucknell held off every Navy charge in the second half for a 59-51 victory at Sojka Pavilion. On Feb. 2 in Alumni Hall, the Bison used an early second-half run to break the game open and top the Mids, 78-63.

Other probable quarterfinal matchups are (8) Lafayette at (1) Holy Cross, (6) Army at (3) Lehigh and (5) Colgate at (4) American. The quarterfinal winners will meet in the semifinals on Sunday, March 4, at campus sites.

Tickets to Bucknell's first-round home game can be purchased in person at the Campus Box Office, over the phone, or online at www.bucknellbison.com.

Former Navy Basketball Assistant Jimmy Allen Leads Averett To the NCAA Tournament For The First Time Since 1990

DOUBLE OH, SO SWEET: Averett wins in double overtime for first USA South
title since 1990

By JEFF PATTERSON

February 25, 2007

NEWPORT NEWS - His eyes red and welled, Jimmy Allen stood atop the ladder and clinched nothing but nylon.

Three years after taking over a downtrodden Averett program, the Cougars coach celebrated his first USA South tournament championship on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

It took two dramatic overtime periods to finish, but top-seeded Averett held off sixth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan 108-105 to advance to the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1990.

"Absolutely the craziest thing I've ever been through in my life," said Averett's Shaun Hagwood, the Cougars' catalyst in the final 35 seconds of regulation.

After squandering a 12-point lead in the second half, the Cougars (20-6) trailed by as much as 13 points, and were down six with under a minute remaining.

They needed a miracle.

What they got was Hagwood.

As Bishops forward Sharard Carmichael flew toward him, Hagwood launched a 3-pointer and fell to the ground, watching as the ball swished the net and as the referee called for a foul. After making the free throw, the Bishops' (12-15) lead was 85-83 with 28.4 seconds left.

"I knew I was going to be open because they were overplaying me the entire time," said Hagwood, who scored 12 points. "That was a blessing from God." It only got more interesting from there. Hagwood forced a turnover to set up Jonathan Rumley's game-tying lay-up with 2.6 seconds left.

"I've played in some pretty close games in Playstation, but this beats everything," Hagwood said.

However, the Cougars couldn't capitalize on the momentum.

11 Cornell Outlasts 12th-Ranked Navy in Hoehn Division Finals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Navy's run at the Hoehn Division title at the 2007 College Squash Association Team Championship came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday afternoon, as the 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red (10-10) edged the No. 12 Midshipmen (23-8), 5-4, to take the title. Navy, who knocked off the top-seeded team in the division, Bates, on Saturday, finished 10th overall in the tournament and second in the Hoehn Division with a 2-1 record.

Navy's 10th-place finish is the highest since Craig Dawson took over the program seven years ago, while the Mids' 23 wins are just one off the record it set two years prior.

"This team really had some great results this season," said Dawson. "They played to the best of their ability all year long and the tournament showed the same drive and effort."

Cornell and Navy met on the squash courts just two weeks ago in Ithaca, N.Y., with Cornell nipping the Midshipmen, 5-4. The individual results from the CSA Team Championship were eerily similar to those in the earlier meeting.

Freshman Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) played his best match of the season, upending 57th-ranked Rohit Gupta at the No. 2 position. After dropping a three-game decision earlier this month, 78th-ranked Mattsson defeated Gupta, 9-1, 9-2, 9-1. With the win, Mattsson became the seventh Navy player to reach 20 wins this season, including the second freshman.

Sophomore Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) pushed his winning streak to 11 in a row after defeating Ted Hill for the second time this season in a 3-0 decision at the No. 3 slot. Meanwhile, junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) captured his team-leading 24th win of the year by posting a 9-4, 9-0, 9-0 victory over Andrew McReynolds at No. 4. Sawin finished the season with an impressive 24-3 record and won his last 12 matches of the year.

Junior Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) needed four games to get past Cornell's Alex Wolff at the No. 9 position, however, the win preserved his 13-match winning streak to conclude the season. Hamilton also defeated Wolff earlier this season in three games.

While Mattsson reversed the tables on Gupta, Cornell's Omar Magalji flipped his loss to Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) on Feb. 10 into a win on Sunday. Zipf opened the match with a 9-4 win, but Magalji came back to sweep the next three games, 9-7, 9-5, 9-7 to take the point at No. 7. One of the most improved players on the roster this season, Zipf finished the year with a 24-7 record.

Navy senior Dan Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) ended his career with a loss to Ian Holton in four games. Hellier, who came to the Academy as a tennis player and later joined the squash team as a junior, finished the year with a 21-10 record.

Doesn't seem that long ago that Brian Stann was leading Scranton Prep’s football team, setting school records by a quarterback for career passing yards (2,675) and rushing (1,332).

Sprink Named Second Team All-PL; Stanton Named to Rookie Team

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Greg Sprink became Navy's first All-Patriot League honoree since 2002, when he was voted to the All-Patriot League second team, the league office announced today. In addition, freshman Trey Stanton became the fourth Navy player in three years to be named to the All-Rookie Team. Navy has now had at least one All-Rookie team selection in each of Billy Lange's three years in charge.

Sprink, a 6-5 guard from Cardiff, Calif., is enjoying a sensational junior campaign. He leads the team in scoring (17.2 ppg), rebounding (4.8 rpg), field goals made and attempted (154-337), three-pointers made and attempted (65-170), free throws made and attempted (125-145), free throw percentage (.862) and is third in assists (73) and steals (26). He is the only player in the Patriot League to rank in the top 10 of the three major statistical categories (points, rebounds and assists). In all games played, he ranks second in scoring on the Patriot League charts behind Holy Cross' Keith Simmons, and was the league's leading scorer in Patriot League games, averaging 17.9 ppg. He became the fifth Navy junior to reach 1,000 points and currently has scored 1,123 points, and is the only current junior in the Patriot League to have scored 1,000 points.

So far this year, Sprink has scored 498 points to rank 11th on the Navy single-season chart. It is the most points scored in a single season since Chris Williams scored 554 in 2001. His 17.2 ppg average ranks 19th on the Navy single-season chart. He also ranks high in three-pointers made (2nd; 65), three-pointers attempted (3rd; 170), free throw percentage (3rd; .862) and minutes played per game (8th; 34.4). He has 10 20-point games this year and has scored in double-figures in 24-of-29 games this year. When Sprink is held to single-digit scoring, Navy is 0-5 this year.

On the career charts at Navy, Sprink is 16th in points (1,123), 13th in points per game (13.7), second in three-pointers made (160), second in three-pointers attempted (431), eighth in three-point percentage (.368) and third in free throw percentage (.831).

Navy's last All-Patriot League honoree was Jehiel Lewis in 2002. The Mids haven't had a first-team selection since Chris Williams in 2001.

Meanwhile, 6-10 freshman forward Trey Stanton earned a spot on the Patriot League All-Rookie team. The Friendswood, Texas, native is averaging 8.1 ppg and 3.9 rpg, while dishing out 33 assists, blocking 23 shots and grabbing 20 steals. He ranks second among all Patriot League freshmen in scoring. He has scored in double figures eight times this year and set a school record for most points scored in his first game as a freshman when he tallied 17 in the season opener against Loyola (Md.). He was twice named Patriot League Rookie of the Week this year.

On the Navy freshmen charts, he ranks 12th in scoring (236 points), fourth in three-pointers made (36), fourth in three-pointers attempted (102), third in blocked shots (23) and second in games started (28). Earlier this year, Stanton became the 11th Navy freshman to score 200 points with 100 rebounds and with just two more blocks, he can join past Navy greats David Robinson (1984) and Dave Brooks (1981) as the only freshmen in school history to register 200 points, 100 rebounds and 25 blocks in a season.

Stanton joins current Mids Greg Sprink (2005), Corey Johnson (2005) and Kaleo Kina (2006) as Patriot League All-Rookie team selections.

Simmons, who was named Patriot League Player of the Year, was joined on the first team by teammate Torey Thomas, Bucknell's Chris McNaughton, American's Andre Ingram and Lehigh's Jose Olivero. Thomas was named Defensive Player of the Year while Holy Cross' Ralph Willard was the Coach of the Year. Joining Sprink on the second team was Holy Cross' Tim Clifford, Bucknell's Donald Brown, Colgate's Jon Simon and Army's Jarell Brown. The All-Rookie team was comprised of Stanton, Lehigh's Marquis Hall, Holy Cross' Eric Meister, Army's Marcus Nelson and Lehigh's Zahir Carrington. Hall was selected as the Rookie of the Year.

Navy Tennis Team Set to Begin Long Road Swing

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After spending the last four weeks playing at home, the Navy tennis team begins a month-long stretch of matches on the road this weekend with contests Saturday at Brown and Sunday at Yale. Saturday's match against the Bears begins at 2 p.m., with Sunday's match against the Bulldogs slated for a 12 Noon start.

Brown, 9-3 on the season, is ranked 57th in the nation according to this week's ITA ranking, while Yale, 1-2 on the year, was ranked as high as 64th during the 2006 spring season. Four members of the Brown team and two from Yale hold regional singles rankings, while two doubles teams from Brown and one from Yale also are regionally ranked. Additionally, Brown's doubles team of Basu Ratnam and Eric Thomas are ranked 11th nationally.

The Mids dropped a 6-1 match to the Bulldogs last year, as well as a 7-0 decision the last time the squad faced the Bears two years ago.

"We will need to be at our best for both matches," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We should be back to full strength this week after playing without a starter last weekend. Our goals are always to compete for every point and remain calm in all situations."

Navy enters the weekend having posted a 5-3 record on the year and has won three of its last four matches.

Contest Will Mark Owls' First Night Game At Lincoln Financial Field

Feb. 26, 2007

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics today announced that the Owls will host Navy on Thursday evening, August 30, in their 2007 football season opener. The contest is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start at Lincoln Financial Field.

"A Thursday evening game provides our fans the opportunity to kick-off the Labor Day weekend with some exciting Temple football action," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "Owls are nocturnal predators and we wanted to provide an environment most conducive to success in beginning our inaugural Mid-American Conference season."

After being an affiliate member of the MAC for the past two seasons, 2007 marks Temple's initial campaign as a full conference member. The Owls will play in the MAC East Division with Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami and Ohio. Under the leadership of second-year head coach Al Golden, Temple will play eight league foes in 2007, including four at home, in what will be their 109th season of football.

The entire 2007 Temple football schedule, as well as season ticket information, will be released at a later date. To place an advanced ticket order for the Temple-Navy game, visit the ticket information page on the Temple athletics web site, www.owlsports.com.

The Owls and Midshipmen have met seven times on the gridiron dating back to 1988, with Temple holding a 4-3 advantage in the series. The Cherry & White will be looking to avenge season-ending losses to the Mids in Annapolis the past two seasons. The Owls opened their 2001 season against Navy on Thursday evening, August 30, at Franklin Field and defeated the visitors 45-26.

Temple begins spring practice on Monday, March 26, and will conclude the drills with the annual Cherry & White intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, April 21, at the Ambler (Pa.) Sports Complex. Last season, the Owls played 22 true freshmen, the most in Division I-A. They competed against eight bowl teams, the third most in the nation, behind only national champion Florida (10) and Stanford (9), during the regular season. Temple, which has only two scholarship seniors on its 2007 roster, signed the highest rated recruiting class in the MAC according to Scout.com earlier this month.

Navy's Meyer Receives Second-Straight League Weekly Accolade

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- For the second time in as many weeks and the third time this season, Navy's Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) has been selected as the Patriot League's Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league office.

Meyer led Navy in scoring in both of its victories last week over American and Colgate, posting a scoring average of 15.5 points a game over the two games. She shot 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from the field and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from behind the three-point line, while averaging 7.5 rebounds a game. She rounded out her 14-point performance against the Eagles with nine boards, three assists, three blocks and four steals, then scored 17 points and grabbed six caroms against the Raiders.

This season Meyer ranks second by three-hundredths of a point to Army's Cara Enright for the league's scoring lead (15.31 to 15.28 points per game), while also ranking third in the conference in both rebounds (7.5 rebounds per game) and three-point field goals made a game (2.16).

She has totaled 952 points and 518 rebounds during her career, while ranking fourth in school history with 86 career blocks and seventh with 121 career three-point field goals made.

Meyer joins Adria Schneck as the lone Mids during Navy's 16-year membership in the Patriot League to garner player-of-the-week accolades three times during one season. Schneck originally achieved the feat during the 1995-96 season.

Additionally, Meyer's four career nods ties her with Courtney Davidson (Class of 2004) for second place for the most weekly accolades in Navy history. Schneck's five weekly laurels from 1995-97 remains the school standard.

Finally, Meyer, Schneck and Laurie Coffey (1998) are the only Mids to have been tabbed as the league's player of the week in back-to-back weeks.

Navy's two wins during the final week of the regular season allowed the Mids to move into a fourth-place tie with American in the final standings with a 6-8 league record. The Mids lost the tiebreaker to the Eagles, however, so Navy will enter the league tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 American in a quarterfinal round game Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Navy's Alumni Hall.

Tickets are available for Saturday's four quarterfinal games and Sunday's two semifinal games of the Patriot League Tournament by calling the Navy Ticket Office at 1-800-US4-NAVY.

Stanton Garners Rookie of the Week Accolades

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy freshman Trey Stanton was named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for his efforts in a pair of Navy games last week. The honor caps off an outstanding Monday for Stanton, as earlier in the day, he was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team. It is his third Rookie of the Week honor of the year and fourth for a Navy freshman this year. Classmate Chris Harris won the award on Nov. 20.

The 6-10 forward , who hails from Friendswood, Texas, was voted Rookie of the Week after averaging 8.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg in a pair of contests last week. On Feb. 20, he scored 12 points with seven rebounds and a blocked shot against American. Last Saturday, he tallied five points with a pair of rebounds against Colgate. During the week, he shot 40.0 percent from the field, including four-of-nine (44.4 percent) from long distance.

For the year, he is averaging 8.1 ppg and 3.9 rpg, while dishing out 33 assists, blocking 23 shots and grabbing 20 steals. He ranks second among all Patriot League freshmen in scoring. He has scored in double figures eight times this year and tied a school record (with classmate T.J. Topercer) for most points scored in his first game as a freshman when he tallied 17 in the season opener against Loyola (Md.).

Navy (14-15) will open play in the Patriot League on Wednesday against second-seeded Bucknell (20-8), beginning at 7:00 pm, in Lewisburg, Pa. For ticket information, please call 570-577-1000 or visit www.bucknellbison.com.

Mids Travel To Bucknell For Patriot League Quarterfinals
The Navy men's basketball team begins its quest for a Patriot League Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth on Wednesday night with a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game at Bucknell beginning at 7:00 pm, in Sojka Pavilion. The Mids enter the contest with a 14-15 overall record, earning the No. 7 seed with a 4-10 Patriot League record. Bucknell is 20-8, garnering the second seed with a 13-1 league record.

The Mids are riding a two-game losing streak, dropping Navy below .500 for the season. Navy controlled its own fate for the No. 4 seed and a home game, but dropped decisions to American (71-60 on Feb. 20) and Colgate (70-62 on Feb. 24). Nevertheless, the Mids enter the tournament with 14 wins, the most for the program since 2000-01.

Navy is led by junior guard Greg Sprink, who was named All-Patriot League second team in voting done by coaches. Sprink is averaging 17.2 ppg and led all league players in scoring in league games with a 17.9 ppg average, becoming the first Navy player to do that. He is averaging 23.7 ppg in Navy's last three games and has dumped in at least 23 points in three of Navy's last five games.

Bucknell, which is trying to become the second team in league history to win three straight Patriot League Tournament titles, boasts a balanced lineup. The Bison are paced by Patriot League first-teamer Chris McNaughton (11.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and second-teamer Donald Brown (11.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg). Brown has been out of the lineup since Feb. 2 (against Navy) with a fractured bone in his right hand, but will likely suit up against the Mids on Wednesday. John Griffin is the third Bucknell player to score in double digits, averaging 10.5 ppg.

The winner will play the winner of Lehigh vs. Army in the semifinals on Sunday, March 4.

LEWISBURG -- Bucknell's latest winning streak might be noteworthy even by the school's recent lofty standards.

The Bison are rolling into their Patriot League tournament opener Wednesday with a 12-game winning streak, tying a school record ‹ but not that surprising for a team that thrives in late February and March.

This winter's run, however, could be even more impressive, given who's not wearing an orange jersey. Forward Donald Brown, who was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team on Monday, has been sidelined for nearly a month with a broken right hand, though coach Pat Flannery hasn't ruled him out when second-seeded Bucknell hosts seventh-seeded Navy in Lewisburg.

"I really don't believe that if they lost any one player, it would greatly impact their team," Midshipmen coach Billy Lange said. "There is such an overall emphasis on team play."

Things haven't been easy, though.

Abe Badmus hit a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left on Saturday against Army to help Bucknell (20-8, 13-1 Patriot) clinch a 54-49 win over Army in the regular-season finale and a share of the Patriot League regular-season title with Holy Cross.

The Bison pulled out a crucial three-point victory over the Crusaders on Feb. 9, three days after ending a back-and-forth game with American with another three-point win.

All with Brown on the bench.

But this isn't a fresh-faced squad at Bucknell. Brown is part of an experienced troika of seniors, including point guard Badmus and center Chris McNaughton, who have played key roles in Bucknell's run to the NCAA tournament the last two seasons.

McNaughton, a first-team selection to the All-Patriot League Team, was having a relatively quiet year but has come on in the last month, notching five double-doubles during Bucknell's winning streak.

The 12-game stretch matches Bucknell's longest winning streak since 1919, and the Bison have secured a third-straight 20-win season for the first time.

"The clock's ticking and these kids are hungry in spite of the success that they've had," Flannery said Monday during a conference call with league coaches. "He's taken it upon himself, been able to stretch the floor a little bit more."

Badmus has been a steady influence, while forward Darren Mastropaolo has stepped back into the starting lineup in place of Brown. Mastropaolo had been sent to the bench at midseason, when Flannery went to a smaller starting lineup with three guards, the lithe Brown at power forward and McNaughton at center.

"I screwed us up early in playing guys out of position. When we got back to our natural spots and Darren accepted coming off the bench, he played so hard," Flannery said. "Darren would do anything you ask of him."

Not that Flannery wouldn't mind having Brown back. After all, the 6-foot-6 co-captain was averaging 6.6 rebounds and shooting 58 percent ‹ both league highs at the time of his injury.

Brown is shooting again, and Flannery said he would know after today's practice whether he would be available against Navy (14-15, 4-10).

It doesn't matter much to Lange.

"If Donald Brown plays or doesn't play, it's not going to hugely impact the way we approach the game," the Navy coach said. "When you play Bucknell, you're playing 15 guys that play Bucknell basketball, and that's a credit to them."
