Andrews Named Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For her efforts academically and athletically, Navy senior Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) has been selected the 2006-07 Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.

Andrews is the second Navy female to be named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in her respective sport in as many days, as Navy’s Kelly Zahalka earned the honors in women’s swimming & diving yesterday afternoon.

“We are definitely thrilled that Kirsten earned this award,” stated Navy head coach Carla Criste. “The accolades are much deserved. She is an incredibly well-rounded student-athlete that works hard on and off the track. Obviously, that effort has paid off for her. Suffice it to say, we are all very proud of her.”

Last year, Andrews was named the Patriot League Outdoor Women’s Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and an ESPN The Magazine Third-Team Academic All-American.

In the classroom, Andrews ranks 41st in her class with a 3.90 cumulative grade point average while majoring in quantitative economics. She recorded his third-consecutive 4.0 semester grade point average in the fall and has achieved the feat four times during her career. She has been named to the Superintendent’s List during each of the last-three semesters and has been a seven-time member of the Commandant’s List. The Navy senior has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll during each of her first-three years in Annapolis.

On the track and in the field, Andrews broke two indoor school records at the Patriot League Championship and competed in three events at the ECAC Championship. The First-Team All-Patriot League selection in both events sprinted across the finish line in 8.70 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and soared 19’5-1/2” (5.93 meters) in the long jump. She also picked up second-team all-league honors in the pole vault with a height of 12’3-1/2” (3.75 meters). She totaled seven first-place efforts during the 2006-07 indoor slate, including four of the ten-fastest times in school history in the 60-meter hurdles and two of the program’s four-longest distances in the long jump.

The product of New Holland, Pa., is the first Navy women’s track & field member to earn Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year distinction during the indoor season.

The Midshipmen will be competing in two events this weekend, as the track members will race at the Colonial Relays on Friday and Saturday in Williamsburg, Va., while the remaining members will trek to Philadelphia for the Penn Invitational on Saturday.

Navy to Partake in Two Meets This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Competing away from home for the first time in three weeks, the Navy men’s track & field team will break up its squad in order to compete in two road meets this weekend. The Midshipmen will travel to the Florida Relays down in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday and Saturday, while the remaining contingent will head up to Franklin Field to partake in the Penn Invitational on Saturday.

The Midshipmen (8-0) are coming off an impressive first-place showing against Princeton, Penn, Rutgers and Colgate at Ingram Field in Annapolis last Saturday. The Mids won eight of the 19 events to rack up 212 points on the afternoon, finishing ahead of Princeton’s 142 points and Penn’s 117 points.

Leading the charge for Navy last weekend was junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai’i), as he won two events with IC4A-qualifying marks. He posted a time of 14.81 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and soared 23’3-1/2” (7.10 meters) in the long jump. Both performances last Saturday were career-best efforts.

Junior middle distance runner Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) had a hand in two event titles for the Midshipmen, both of which were IC4A times. He won the 800-meter run with a season-best 1:51.63 showing, then served on the 4x400-meter relay team that crossed the finish line in 3:11.78.

A pair of Navy distance runners went 1-2 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last weekend to meet the IC4A standard in the event. Junior John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the race with a time of 9:13.62, while senior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) came in second with a 9:14.86 showing, nearly eight seconds faster than his performance one week before.

Junior thrower Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) won the shot put for the third time in as many outdoor meets this season, this time with a season-best performance. He uncorked a throw of 54’9-1/2” (16.70 meters) to best his previous season best by nearly a foot and just missed NCAA East Region Championship qualification by a mere four inches.

Following the action at this weekend’s road meets, the Midshipmen will return to Annapolis to host their third and final home meet of the season, the annual Star Meet against Army on Saturday, April 14. Navy defeated Army at Ingram Field during the last outdoor Star Meet held in Annapolis, and the Midshipmen topped the Black Knights, 95-86, in the indoor Star Meet held up in West Point earlier this year.

Navy Crew Teams in Action Over the Easter Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 20th annual George Washington Invitational and the 71st edition of the Adams Cup highlights this weekend's schedule for the Navy's three rowing programs.

Fresh off the program's first Playfair Cup victory over Boston University and George Washington, Navy's women's team will take part in the George Washington Invitational this weekend on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Navy's varsity boat will race Friday against Iowa (2:57 p.m.) and Saturday against St. Joseph's (9:21 a.m.) and Clemson (2:32 p.m.) as part of the regatta.

In addition to the varsity race, Navy also will enter boats into the second varsity eight, varsity four and freshman eight flights.

Navy's varsity boat topped the Terriers and the Colonials last weekend to win the Playfair Cup for the first time since the schools began racing for the trophy in 2000. The victory also allowed Navy to garner seven points and rank 26th nationally in this week's U.S. Rowing / Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll.

Clemson tallied 57 points in the same poll to rank 21st, while neither Iowa nor St. Joseph's received any votes.

"Although we haven't raced against them many times in the past because they are in different regions than we are, we know Iowa and Clemson are both very good teams," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "We also expect to have a close race with St. Joseph's.

"Facing three quality teams as we are this weekend will let us know where we stand and how fast our boat really is."

The 2,000-meter, four-lane buoyed course begins near the Spout Run area of the Potomac River with the finish line at Washington Harbour in Georgetown.

While Navy's women's team will race locally for the first time this season, the heavyweight team will travel to Boston to challenge Harvard and Penn in the annual Adams Cup race on the Charles River. The trio of teams first met in 1933 to challenge for the trophy named after Charles Francis Adams, a Harvard graduate and former Secretary of the Navy under President Herbert Hoover.

The results of the varsity race between the teams have been the same in each of the last four meetings -- Harvard in first place, Navy in second and Penn in third. The Crimson, in fact, won each of the five races between the program's last season in Annapolis.

Navy's last victory in the Adams Cup (varsity) race came in 1996, with Penn recording its only victory over the last decade in 1999.

The Crimson are ranked sixth in this week's U.S. Rowing Men's Varsity Eight Collegiate Coaches Poll, with the Mids ranked 12th and the Quakers 15th.

"This is a very historical race and it is always an exciting week for each of the teams," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "A big unknown for this weekend is the weather. It could really have a hand in determining the outcome of the race."

After opening the season with victories over Yale and George Washington, Navy's varsity boat lost to Princeton last weekend.

Rounding out the racing for the Easter holiday weekend is Navy's lightweight squad, which will take to the waters of the Raritan River in New Brunswick, N.J., Sunday to face Rutgers and Columbia. The Mids topped the Scarlet Knights by three seconds and the Lions by nine seconds when the varsity boats met one year ago.

Navy's varsity boat has split its two races on the season, dropping its race to Princeton two weeks ago and recording a two-second victory over Yale last weekend.

Mids to Defend Navy Spring Invitational Title

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Individual medalist Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) and the Navy golf team will defend its team title at the 2007 Navy Spring Invitational set for Friday and Saturday at the par-71 USNA Golf Course in Annapolis. Last spring, the Navy Gold squad held off Rider by two strokes to win the Navy Spring Invitational for the second time in four years.

Navy will field three teams - Blue, Gold and White - in the 23-team tournament, along with Binghamton, Bucknell, Colgate, Delaware, Drexel, George Washington, Iona, Johnson & Wales, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola, Millersville, Penn, Rider, Rollins College, Rutgers, St. Bonaventure, Seton Hall, Temple and Villanova.

In the 27 years the Navy Spring Invitational has been played, 16 different schools have claimed the team title, including 2007 participant Temple, who has won the most crowns with five. However, the Owls' last Navy Spring Invitational title was in 1989. There have been eight different winners in the last nine Navy Spring Invitationals with Navy the only repeat winner in 2003 and '06.

Last year, the Navy Gold team held a narrow 1-stroke lead over George Washington following the opening round, as the Mids' 5-over par 289 marked the eighth-lowest team mark in program history. Navy was led by Schoen's 5-under par 66, the second-lowest score in school history and the lowest 18-hole score in Navy Spring Invitational history. The Mids claimed the title, their first team title since winning the Patriot League Championship in April of 2003, by producing a two-day 14-over par 582.

Navy's Blue squad will tee-off at 10:22 on Friday, marking just its fourth competition of the spring. The Mids placed fourth (of 7) at the Cat Classic in their opener less than a month ago, while finishing 13th (of 24) at the George Washington Invitational and 19th (of 21) at the Lacrosse Homes Invitational last weekend. Junior Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) is pacing the Mids this year with a 75.3 stroke average and has turned in three top-20 finishes. Sophomore Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) has finished among the top 10 in a pair of tournaments this year and owns the team's second-lowest stroke average at 76.0. All-Patriot League players Chris Renninger (Darnesville, Md.) and Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) are right at Stinson's heels with a 76.1 average, and Schoen is at 76.2.

Mids Win Another Close Tennis Match

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The ability to win the doubles point proved key again for the Navy tennis team Thursday as the Mids won the point to help run their winning streak to five-straight matches with a 4-3 victory over UMBC at the Severn Valley Tennis and Fitness Club.

Three of Navy's last five wins have been determined by a score of 4-3. The Mids have won the doubles point in each of the last five matches and are 7-1 on the season when winning the doubles point.

The win also improved Navy's record on the season to 11-10, while UMBC fell to 10-5-1 on the year with the loss.

"We beat a quality team today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "It was a hard-fought victory with great rallies in several of the matches."

The two teams split the decisions at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, which left the No. 3 doubles match between the Navy duo of Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Fr., Danville, Calif.) and the UMBC pairing of Fernando Ferreira and Chris Meyer to determine the outcome. The match would be extended into a tiebreaker, with James and Lemaich eventually posting an 8-6 win to secure the point for the Mids.

Each of the singles matches were also close, with four of the matches lasting three sets and tiebreakers being contested in the remaining two matches.

Lemaich recorded his second victory of the day and gave the Mids a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6 singles over Ferreira. Nick Savage-Pollock, however, quickly pulled the Retrievers to within one point of the Mids at 2-1 with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 victory over James at No. 5 singles.

The teams also split the ensuing two completed matches, as well, with Navy's Johnny Waters (So., Papillion, Neb.) winning by a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 score over Chris Meyer at No. 2 singles and Fredi Voorman of UMBC topping Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.) at No. 4 singles.

Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) dropped the first set of his No. 1 singles match to Ifran Shamasdin by a score of 6-1, then fell behind 4-0 in the second set. Shamasdin would soon hold a match point over Nelms, but the Navy sophomore fought it off and eventually won the second set by a score of 7-5. Nelms would then control the third set and go on to post a 6-0 victory in the set to give the Mids their clinching fourth point of the day.

"What a great rally by Nate," said Officer. "It was an impressive comeback."

The final match of the day went UMBC's way, with David Jackson recording a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-1 (10-3) win over Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) at the No. 3 flight.

Navy will close its regular season with matches April 14 at Lehigh and the following day in the Star Match at Army.

"We have some thing to work on and clean up as we approach the end of the regular season, the Star Match against Army and the Patriot League Tournament," said Officer.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy head coach Cindy Timchal has named Allison Valentino as the Associate Head Coach of the Navy women's lacrosse program. Valentino comes to Navy after a wealth of experience at three different universities and as a standout player at Loyola College in Baltimore. Valentino will join the program immediately.

"We are thrilled and excited to have Allison Valentino join us here at the Naval Academy," said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal. "I have known Allison professionally for 10 years. She is an exceptional coach and an outstanding recruiter of talent. It is those skills and her enthusiasm for women's lacrosse that will help the U.S. Naval Academy build a championship team. She will be a very welcome addition, not only to the Navy women's lacrosse program, but to the institution as well."

For the past year and a half, Valentino served as the head coach at the University of Ohio before the university decided to drop the program on Jan. 24th. While at Ohio, Valentino guided the Bobcats to a 4-12 record in 2006 and had two players earn All-Conference honors and another named as the ALC Goalie of the Year. Valentino was the fifth head coach in the program's history and the third since women's lacrosse was returned to varsity status in 1999.

Valentino took over the Ohio job after serving as an assistant coach under Timchal for one year in 2004. While at Maryland, she served as the primary recruiting coordinator while working extensively with the offense and goalies. Maryland achieved a national ranking of seventh in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and landed three players on the IWLCA All-America team in 2004. In addition, three players were members of the United States Development Team and one was an United States World Cup team alternate.

Valentino spent six seasons at Duke University, first as assistant and then associate head coach, prior to her experience at Maryland. At Duke, Valentino helped build the Blue Devils program into one of the elite programs in the country. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of her six seasons, including three straight quarterfinal appearances and a trip to the national semifinals in 1999, equaling a school record in victories. Twelve Duke players were named IWLCA All-Americans during her tenure, as well as 19 All-ACC selections. In addition, the 2004 recruiting class was ranked tops in the nation by Inside Lacrosse Magazine and five of the six recruiting classes were ranked in the top seven nationally. The 2003 class included four members off the USA Under-19 team and was ranked second in the nation by Inside Lacrosse.

Valentino also strives for success in the classroom. She has served as an academic advisor to all of her teams. Last year at Ohio U., the team was recognized as a "Merit Squad" for having a team GPA of over 3.00 and two of the four seniors on the team were named to the IWLCA Honor Roll. While at Duke in 2004, the Blue Devils won the IWLCA Merit Award for leading all NCAA Division I schools with a 3.40 team GPA.

As a student-athlete, Valentino was a two-time All-CAA selection at Loyola College in Baltimore and earned IWLCA All-America accolades in 1996 and 1997. She led the Greyhounds to three NCAA Tournament national semifinals and a spot in the 1997 NCAA Championship game. Valentino played on the Loyola team that earned the No. 1 ranking and won a school-record 16 games in 1994. She finished her career with 71 goals and 49 assists for 120 points.

"I am excited to begin working at the United States Naval Academy," said Valentino. "The opportunity to work at the academy presents an exceptional experience in that I will be working at a unique institution with very dedicated student-athletes, the chance to build a lacrosse program from club status to Division I and the opportunity to work with Cindy Timchal for the second time."

A native of Fulton, Md., Valentino earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in clinical psychology at Loyola.

Navy Volleyball Spring Season Update

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team is currently in the midst of a very busy and successful spring season, both on and off the court.

"I have been pleased with how the spring has gone for us, so far," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "Our rising seniors have really moved into leadership positions on the team and the players are very much responding to them. Our 2007 captain Aimee' Burns (Jr., Dallas, Texas) has a tremendous work ethic and it is contagious to the rest of the players."

The season began with the Mids competing against Bucknell in a series of drills and matches over the course of a day.

"Our day spent working against Bucknell was beneficial to players and coaches on both teams," said Schwob. "We didn't just play traditional 6-on-6 matches to 30 points, so we were able to try a number of different things and combinations over the course of the day."

The following week, Navy played host to its annual spring tournament, with the Mids taking second place on the day against a field featuring George Mason, Lock Haven, Wagner and a pair of local USAVB club teams.

"We lost our first match of the day to George Mason, but won every other match we played," said Schwob. "You could really see our confidence grow by the end of the last match."

In addition to the competition of the spring tournament, all of the participating programs contributed school supplies that will be sent to an orphanage in Liberia, Africa, where former Navy football player Rashad Jones is deployed to with the United Nations Mission.

"We greatly appreciate the willingness of the other teams to join us in bringing supplies for such a worthy cause," said Schwob. "Our office was filled with what everyone brought with them."

Two more weeks remain in the spring season for Navy, with the team playing in tournaments this weekend at George Washington and April 14 at Long Island.

"We are happy with where we are at right now, but we want to continue working hard and playing well to allow us to end our spring season on a high note," said Schwob. "A successful end to the spring will only make us that more excited about the start of fall practice, which will be here before we know it."

In addition to getting used to new lineups this spring without the four-member Class of 2007, the Navy players have also adapted to a recent change in the program's coaching staff. After six years, Malia Witherspoon left the program as its full-time assistant coach in January, with former Towson standout Mary Clare Coghlan taking her place. Coghlan was tabbed as the Colonial Athletic Association's Setter of the Year during her junior and senior seasons and helped the Tigers earn the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2004.

"Mary Clare has already had an impact on our program," said Schwob. "She is working hard with our setters and brings a great deal of enthusiasm to the entire team."

The move gives Navy 10 games on national television next fall - 6 on CSTV, 2 on ESPN, 1 on NBC and 1 on CBS

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh's first football game with Navy in 18 years will be a national ESPN telecast on Wednesday, October 10, it has been announced.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, October 13, at Heinz Field, the contest was moved to Wednesday after ESPN officials expressed an interest in making the Pitt-Navy game an exclusive national broadcast, kicking off four consecutive days of college football programming by the network.

The game will kick at 8 p.m., and be the only college football telecast by the network that evening.

"We are pleased and excited that ESPN has provided us with the opportunity to renew the Pitt-Navy series in front of a national television audience," said Pitt Athletic Director Jeff Long. "Playing the national college football showcase game on Wednesday night allows us to take advantage of an opportunity for national exposure without compromising our desire to not play on Friday nights out of respect for the traditions of Western Pennsylvania high school football."

"This is a real win-win for us," Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt said. "We?re getting a nationally televised game, which is always great for our program and recruiting. The date change also gives us a week-and-a-half to prepare for two consecutive opponents in October (Navy and Cincinnati) which we hope to use to our advantage."

Pitt and Navy last met during the 1989 season. The Panthers hold a 20-12-3 lead in the series that dates back to 1912. Navy went 9-4 last year and received an invitation to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, where it lost to Boston College, 25-24. The Midshipmen have advanced to the postseason each of the last four years.

Navy will appear on national television 10 times next fall. All six home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will be broadcast live by CSTV, while the Mids will appear twice on ESPN and once each on NBC and CBS.

Navy All-Access, available online for $6.95 per month, allows the subscriber to tune into any Navy event that has audio and/or video coverage.

Scouting Lafayette

Lafayette will make the trip to Annapolis with a 13-10 overall record and a 4-0 mark in Patriot League play following its sweep of league preseason favorite Army in Easton, Pa., last weekend. The Leopards posted a pair of one-run victories over the Black Knights and held their guests to 11 runs over the four-game series.

The trip to the Academy will not be an unfamiliar one for Lafayette head coach Joe Kinney, as he served as an assistant coach for the Mids from 1992-99 before taking over at Lafayette. Kinney focused on the hitters and defense, while assisting as a facility and equipment manager during four of Navy’s Patriot League titles.

Pitching has served the Leopards well this season, as they rank second in the league with a 4.04 team ERA. Each of Lafayette’s four probable starting pitchers this weekend own an ERA under 4.00, highlighted by Kevin Reese’s 1.83 ERA in 19.2 innings. Matt Kamine has been impressive with his control during the 2007 slate, issuing only five walks in 44.1 innings pitched with 37 strikeouts.

Not to be over-shadowed, the Leopards are hitting .280 as a group with 42 stolen bases. Jeff Butler leads the team with a .402 (35-for-87) batting average with five doubles and 16 RBIs. James Conrad has proved to be a difficult out, hitting .313 (30-for-96) with 12 walks and only four strikeouts.

Last Year Against the Leopards

The Midshipmen and the Leopards split a hard-fought four-game set at Class of 1978 Stadium in Easton, Pa., last year. Right-hander Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead the Mids to victory in the opener. Harris also did damage at the plate during the weekend series, hitting .471 (8-for-17) with a double and two RBIs. Navy reliever Mark Foris (Maspeth, N.Y.) earned a win the series finale, as he fired 4.1 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball over two appearances during the series.

All-Time Series with Lafayette

Heading into this weekend’s action, Navy owns a 51-25-2 (.667) all-time advantage over Lafayette. The Midshipmen will look to extend their 20-6 (.769) margin over the Leopards since 1993 in Annapolis. However, the Leopards took from three-of-four from the Mids in 2005 at Max Bishop Stadium.

Scouting UMBC

UMBC heads into their four-game, America East Conference season-opening series with Hartford this weekend with an 8-13 record on the year. The Midshipmen and the Retrievers were scheduled to play earlier this season on March 7 in Annapolis, but the game was cancelled due to cold weather.

The Retrievers are hitting .277 as a team, highlighted by Steve Bowen’s .420 average with six doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs. Their pitching staff heads into the weekend with a 5.31 ERA and .311 opposition batting average.

All-Time Record vs. America East Conference Schools

The Midshipmen own an all-time record of 31-30-1 (.508) against teams currently affiliated with the America East Conference. Navy has played Albany (0-1), Hartford (3-0), Maine (2-2), UMBC (12-16) and Vermont (14-11-1) during its 112-year program history. The Midshipmen have not met Binghamton nor Stony Brook on the baseball diamond.

Scouting Coppin State

Coppin State enters their weekend series with Delaware State in search of its first victory of the season. With 11 players on the roster, the Eagles are 0-25 on the year and have been no-hit three times this season.

The offense has produced 31 runs in 25 ballgames so far this season and have hit .155 as a team. Harry Williams has been a bright spot for the Eagles, hitting .324 with three doubles two home runs and 10 RBIs. Coppin State’s pitchers have posted a 17.18 team ERA with 181 walks and 41 strikeouts in 150.1 innings of work.

All-Time Record vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Schools

The Midshipmen own an all-time record of 26-7-1 (.779) against teams currently affiliated with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Navy has played Coppin State (6-3-1), Delaware State (7-1), Florida A&M (3-0) and UMES (8-2) during its 112-year program history. The Midshipmen have not met Bethune-Cookman, Norfolk State or North Carolina A&T on the baseball diamond.

Patriot League Unbeatens Square Off in Annapolis

This weekend’s four-game series between Navy and Lafayette represents the first time two Patriot League undefeated teams after the opening weekend of play will square off since the league switched its weekend schedule format in 1995.

In fact, this is the first time that two teams have opened the year 4-0 in Patriot League action since 1995.

Busting Out the Road Brooms

Navy recorded a four-game sweep of Patriot League foe Holy Cross up in Worcester, Mass., to open the league slate this year. The four-game sweep of a league opponent on the road is Navy’s first since it took four from the Crusaders in the Bay State on April 28-29, 1995.

Starting Hot in the Patriot League

Navy owns an all-time record of 42-12 (.778) following its Patriot League season-opening weekend, including an 12-3 (.800) mark in its first league game of the year. The Midshipmen have started the league slate with a 4-0 record in back-to-back years for the second time in school history (other time being the 1994 and ‘95 seasons).

Going 4-0 to Start in the Patriot League

Navy’s four victories to open its action in the Patriot League are one shy of tying the school record of five wins set during the 1994, ‘95 and ‘06 campaigns.

Navy’s History of Success in the Patriot League

Despite joining the Patriot League two years after it began competing in baseball, Navy has won more league postseason and regular season titles than any other team in league history. The Midshipmen, who joined the league in 1993, have won five Patriot League titles and been crowned regular season champions on eight occasions. Navy’s all-time winning percentage of .601 (172-114) in Patriot League action is tied for first among teams currently affiliated with the league.

Navy Tabbed Second in Patriot League Preseason Poll

The Navy baseball team has been picked to tie for second place in the 2007 Patriot League Preseason Poll, voted on by each school’s head coach and sports information contact. Five of the six teams in the Patriot League received a first-place vote in the poll.

For the third-consecutive year, Army (30-20-1, 10-10 PL/fourth) has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league with seven first-place ballots and 46 points. Lafayette (27-24, 11-9 PL/third) and Navy (32-21-1, 8-12 PL/fifth) each accumulated 34 points to tie for second, as the Leopards received two first-place votes and the Midshipmen collected one. Bucknell (24-24, 13-7 PL/tied-first) tallied 30 points and a first-place vote, while defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (28-28, 13-7 PL/tied-first) came in fifth with 24 points and one first-place ballot and Holy Cross (16-26-1, 5-15 PL/sixth) rounds out the league with 12 points.

Second-Youngest Team in Patriot League

The 2007 Navy baseball team ranks as the second-youngest team in the Patriot League this season, highlighted by its 16 freshmen and only five seniors. Only Lehigh, last year’s league champion, welcomes more new faces this year, as nearly half (17-of-35) of its team is comprised of freshmen.

Freshmen Making Immediate Impact

Navy has relied heavily upon its freshman class during its successful start to the 2007 season. The Midshipmen have started no fewer than two freshmen in all-31 games this season. On six occasions, the Mids have slotted six freshmen in the starting lineup, going 5-1 in those contests. Navy has started six freshmen during five of the last-15 contests.

Five Patriot League Rookie of the Week Awards

Navy won the Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award for five-consecutive weeks to open the year. Steven Soares (Parkland, Fla.) is the first Navy player to earn rookie-of-the-week honors twice, while Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.), Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.) and Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) have each won the award once.

The 2007 Midshipmen become the first team in Patriot League history to win one award for five-straight weeks, topping Navy’s four-consecutive pitcher-of-the-week accolades during the 1999 season.

The five Patriot League Rookie of the Week Awards this season ties the 2005 Army squad for the second-most in league history. The Black Knights brought home the weekly honors six times during the 2004 campaign.

18 Wins Before Patriot League Play

The Navy baseball team won 18 games prior to the start of league action this season. The 18 non-league wins ranks as the second-highest total in school history, only six behind last year’s 24-win output during out-of-league games. Navy’s 18 wins prior to the start of Patriot League play also ranks second in program history, only one win shy of the record set by the 2006 squad.

Navy Reaches 1,600 All-Time Wins

Navy registered its 1,600th victory during its 112-year program history with a 2-1 win over Monmouth on March 11 in Annapolis. The Midshipmen entered the 2007 campaign as the 48th-winningest team in the nation, having won 60-percent of their all-time contests.

Kosty Second-Quickest to 50 Wins with Navy

With Navy’s 16-3 win over Mount St. Mary’s on March 27, second-year Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos became the second-fastest Navy skipper to get to 50 wins during his tenure with the Mids. Kostacopoulos’ 50th-career win with Navy came in his 81st game at the helm for the Mids (50-30-1), only four games behind legendary head coach Joe Duff, who won his 50th game in his 77th contest on May 1, 1965 (50-25-2).

Kosty Gets Career Win No. 550

Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos picked up his 550th career victory with a 9-7 victory over Buffalo on March 15 in Annapolis. The 18-year veteran head coach reached the 550-win mark after spending his first-seven years at Providence in 1990-96, and nine seasons at Maine from 1997-05, before taking over the reigns of the Midshipmen baseball program in 2006.

Kosty Likes Them Close

Since taking over the reigns of the Navy baseball program last season, head coach Paul Kostacopoulos has been quite successful in one-run affairs, posting a record of 19-6 (.760). The Midshipmen are off to an 8-2 start in one-run games in 2007 after going 11-4 last season.

Mids Using the Long Ball

After hitting four home runs during its first-26 games of the season, Navy has pounded eight home runs over its last-five games. Six different Midshipmen have gotten in on the act during this run, highlighted by Mitch Harris’ (Mt. Holly, N.C.) home runs in back-to-back-to-back games at Holy Cross. Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas), Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.), Kendall Bolt (Stockton, Calif.), Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) and Jack Ferrick (Stafford, Va.) each went deep in Navy’s 16-3 win at Mount St. Mary’s on March 27.

Harris Homered in Back-to-Back-to-Back Games

Navy junior Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) became just the second player in school history to belt a home run in three-consecutive games when he performed the feat at Holy Cross on March 31-April 1. The only other player to hit a round-tripper in back-to-back-to-back games was Mark Zematis at East Carolina on March 4-5, 2000.

Harris is the first player in program history to hit a four-bagger in three-straight Patriot League games.

Harris Ranking Among Four Career Strikeout Categories

Junior right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) ranks among Navy’s top-five pitchers in career strikeouts, career strikeouts per nine innings and career strikeouts before his senior year, as well as fifth in Patriot League career strikeouts. Harris ranks fifth on the career strikeouts list with 202, which is also the second-highest total in school history before his senior campaign. His 12.31 strikeouts per nine innings ranks first all-time, more than two strikeouts per game better than the second-best mark.

Hollins Moving Up Stolen Base List

Junior center fielder Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) is tied for fourth on the career stolen bases list with 42 during his first two-plus seasons. His career total matches him with Pete Curnow, who swiped 42 bags from 2002-04.

Hollins is just the second player in school history to steal 10 or more bases in a year for three-consecutive seasons. Craig Candeto is the only other player to achieve this feat, swiping 10-plus bases during each of his four seasons from 2001-04.

Melton: Saving the Game

Navy freshman reliever JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) owns the Navy freshman saves record with six saves this season. He broke the record of four saves, previously held by Todd Bizba in 1985. Melton’s six saves also places him second on the all-time single-season saves list, only behind Ryan Hefner’s 10 saves last year. The Navy freshman’s six saves also tie him for third on the career saves list with Todd Bizba (1985-88) and match the eighth-highest single-season mark in Patriot League history.

Home Sweet Home

The Midshipmen are slated to play 30 home games at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, which would break the record of 28 home contests set last year. Of the 30 home games, 19 were played before April 1.

Field Dedication Set for April 28 vs. Bucknell

Prior to the start of Navy’s April 28 doubleheader against Bucknell at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, the field will officially be dedicated to the Terwilliger Brothers for their generous contributions to the Navy baseball program.

Ron Terwilliger was a three-year starter at second base from 1961-63 and hit .383 during his junior year in Annapolis. After graduating with honors, he served in the Navy before getting his MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. In 1986, he became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Trammell Crow Residential, a national real estate company that is the largest developer of multi-family housing in the United States.

Bruce Terwilliger was a star pitcher on the mound for the Midshipmen during his three years with the varsity baseball team from 1962-64. As a sophomore in 1962, he went 8-0 with a miniscule 2.29 ERA in 59.0 innings. He currently is only one of five pitchers in school history to post an undefeated record with five-plus decisions in a year. After he was commissioned into the Navy in 1964, he served and achieved the rank of Commander (O-5) prior to his retirement after 20 years of service.

With the generous support of the Terwilliger brothers, Navy’s home field went under massive renovations in the fall of 2005, highlighted by the installation of FieldTurf, 1,000 chair-back seats and a state-of-the-art hitting facility with several other amenities. As a result, Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium has become of the premier facilities in the East to play and watch a baseball game.

Buddy Custer Added to Coaching Staff

Navy baseball head coach Paul Kostacopoulos and the coaching staff announced the addition of Buddy Custer as a volunteer assistant coach during this past summer.

A native of Hatfield, Pa., Custer began his coaching career in the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Villanova for one season in 1992, after which he coached at C.W. Post in the fall of 1992 and assisted at Fordham from 1993-94.

From 1995-99, Custer served as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State, where he worked with the pitching staff and outfielders while also helping as a recruiting assistant. Then in the fall of 1999, he took over the head coaching reigns for one season at Barton College (N.C.).

Custer also carries extensive coaching experience within collegiate summer baseball leagues. He has fulfilled the role of head coach for the Austin Minny Stars of the Northwoods League in 1994, the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League from 2000-02 and the Baltimore Pride of the Clark Griffith League in 2003. Custer also served as an assistant coach in the Cape Cod League for the Bourne Braves in 1994 and the Wareham Gatemen in 2003.

The Leopards make the trip down to Annapolis having won each of their last-five contests, including a four-game sweep of preseason league favorite Army.

Harvard Retains Adams Cup; Navy Places Second in Every Race

BOSTON, Mass. -- Harvard's heavyweight crew team won each of the five races contested on the day between the Crimson, Navy and Penn for the second-consecutive season, Saturday morning on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. The victory in the varsity race allowed the Crimson to maintain possession of the Adams Cup for the seventh-straight season.

"We're disappointed in the result of the varsity race, but we feel better about our performance when compared to the results of both last year's Adams Cup race and our race last weekend against Princeton," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier.

The Mids held a slim lead of one seat after 500 meters of the varsity race, but Harvard would overtake Navy and take a lead of their own of nearly four seats over the second 500 meters of the course. The Crimson advantage would slowly increase over the remainder of the race until they posted a winning time of 6:07.0.

Navy would finish in second place in the race with a clocking of 6:15.3, while Penn placed third with a time of 6:23.4.

Harvard won last year's varsity race by 11 seconds over Navy, with the Mids narrowly holding off the Quakers by 1.2 seconds. This year, Navy finished eight seconds in back of the Crimson and eight seconds in front of Penn.

Last week's results saw Navy's varsity boat drop a 14-second decision to the Tigers.

"I can see the improvement in our boat," said Clothier. "We had a much more competitive race than we did both a year ago and last week. We still have things to work on but we are getting better."

The second varsity race saw the Crimson take leads of one-half of a boat length after 500 meters and one full length by 1000 meters before winning the race with a time of 6:18.6. The Mids and the Quakers, meanwhile, raced seat-to-seat down the course and finished in a dead heat with identical times of 6:23.1.

The Mids finished 20 seconds in back of Harvard during the 2006 second varsity race.

Harvard would win each of the remaining three races on the day, with Navy finishing in second place in each contest.

The Mids will take next weekend off from racing before returning to action April 20 when Navy plays host to Cornell and Syracuse in the Goes Trophy races.

Navy's defensive line was decimated. Not only did the Midshipmen lose all three starters, but the primary backups are also due to graduate.

As a result, Navy must rely on a group of young, inexperienced players to battle in the trenches and hold the point of attack. Needless to say, defensive line coach Dale Pehrson has his work cut out for him this spring as he seeks to rebuild the depleted unit....

The rebuilding of the Navy baseball program is on schedule. Make that ahead of schedule.

Two years removed from a 12-win season, the Mids are sitting at 22-9, and currently share the top spot in the Patriot League with Lafayette at 4-0. That could change this weekend as the Mids host the Leopards for four games, with noon doubleheaders set for today and tomorrow at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium....

Mids Conduct First Scrimmage Of Spring

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy head football coach Paul Johnson put his squad through its first scrimmage of the spring in wintry conditions Saturday morning at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Temperature was 34 degrees and the field was covered with snow when the scrimmage started.

"I didn?t think the weather was that bad," said Johnson. "It turned out to be a pretty nice day. As far as the scrimmage, I?m going to withhold judgment until I watch the tape but I can you we had way too many penalties on both sides of the ball and we had the ball out too much on offense, which is disappointing."

The offense started from its own 30-yard line on 17 possessions and scored seven touchdowns. The defense came up with four turnovers on the day.

The first team offense scored on two of its six possessions against the first team defense. Junior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheakue-Enhada (Kapolei, Hawaii) led the first team to one touchdown in his three possessions with the first unit, while junior quarterback Jarod Bryant (Hoover, Ala.) led the first group to a score in his only possession. The first team came up empty in the two possessions that senior Troy Goss (Shelby, N.C.) was behind center.

The second team offense got the ball five times against the second team defense and scored three touchdowns. Bryant was the quarterback on two of the possessions, leading the offense to one touchdown, while Goss led the second team to two touchdowns in three possessions.

Sophomore quarterback Greg Zingler (Severna Park, Md.) was the quarterback for all six possessions the third team offense had against the third team defense and led the offense to two touchdowns.

The four Navy quarterbacks combined to rush for 230 yards and four touchdowns on 45 carries and complete 14-26 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

Kaheaku-Enhada led the ground game with 66 yards on just eight carries. Zingler rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, Goss rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and Bryant rushed for 44 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

Goss was the leading passer, completing four of his eight attempts for 111 yards and one interception, Zingler was 5-10 for 63 yards with one touchdown and one interception, Bryant was 3-5 for 33 yards and Kaheaku-Enhada was 2-3 for 19 yards and one touchdown.

"I thought Kaipo did a real nice job today," said Johnson. "When he is out there he moves the team pretty good. I thought Jarod did some good things and I thought Troy did some good things. They are all coming along. The last touchdown drive that Jarod led was all option plays and he did a nice job of making the right reads. I wanted to give all these guys a chance to play with the first unit to see what they can really do."

The slot backs carried the ball 13 times for 87 yards on the day, with sophomore Bobby Doyle (Chardon, Ohio) leading the way with 38 yards on eight carries. Junior Shun White (Memphis, Tenn.) rushed for 24 yards on just two carries. White also caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Kaheaku-Enhada, while Doyle had three catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown catch was on a beautiful catch and throw from Zingler that went for 32 yards.

"Bobby Doyle made some plays today," said Johnson. "I really like the way he plays. He had a couple of nice runs and a nice catch."

The fullbacks combined to rush for 118 yards on 30 carries. Senior fullback Adam Ballard (Lewisville, Texas) rushed for 50 yards on 13 carries, while junior Eric Kettani (Kirtland, Ohio) rushed for 33 yards on nine carries. Kettani also had two catches for 76 yards, including a 63-yard screen pass from Goss.

Sophomore Nate Frazier (Atlanta, Ga.), junior Scott Reider (LaPorte, Ind.), senior Jeff Deliz (Clinton Township, Mich.) and junior Casey Nichols (The Woodlands, Texas) all came up with turnovers for the defense. Frazier and Reider had fumble recoveries, while Deliz and Nichols had interceptions. Matt Neechak (So./Canoga Park, Calif.) recorded a sack, while Tony Haberer (So./Liberty Hill, Texas) and Craig Schaefer (So./Fairfax, Va.) combined for a sack.

Haberer was the leading tackler on the day with 11 stops, while Frazier, Jordan Eddington (So./San Antonio, Texas) and Jonathan Alvarado (Sr./Baton had 10 tackles apiece. Irv Spencer (Sr./Oakwood Village, Ohio) added nine tackles, while Reider had eight.

Navy will practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday next week and then will scrimmage next Saturday at 9 a.m. at Farragut Field.
