BOWL ELIGIBLE NAVY TO PLAY IN
2007 SAN DIEGO COUNTY CREDIT UNION POINSETTIA BOWL

A minimum six-win season lands the Midshipmen in San Diego for 3rd annual game

The United States Naval Academy Midshipmen will play in the 2007 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl with a six win or better regular season, San Diego Bowl Game Association President Rudy Castruita announced today.

"We're ecstatic the Midshipmen will likely be returning to San Diego for the third annual bowl game," Castruita said. "They created so much excitement in the inaugural game two years ago and we sincerely would look forward to their tradition-rich football program returning to San Diego this December."

The agreement is for 2007 only. The bowl game will match the Midshipmen against the second selection from the nine-team Mountain West Conference. The Pioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas Bowl has the first pick. Navy played in the inaugural San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl in 2005 defeating the Colorado State Rams 51-30 in front of 35,842 Qualcomm Stadium fans.

"The Navy family is still talking about the fantastic experience we had in San Diego for the inaugural game," said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. "The bowl staff makes this game a first class experience for our team and all who visit one of the finest destination cities in the country. We need to win games this fall to be rewarded, but our fans can be certain that having a trip to San Diego in December as a possibility will be more motivation than ever for our team to succeed."

The 2006 Navy Midshipmen finished their regular season with a 9-3 record and were rewarded with an invitation to play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina. They were narrowly defeated by Boston College 25-24.

The date and time for this year's Poinsettia Bowl have yet to be determined, though it is certain it will be played prior to the Christmas Day holiday.

Transcript Of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's Comments following
practice on Wednesday, April 11

In Attendance: Bill Wagner (Annapolis Capital)

Wagner: You were probably out here on the field and didn't see the big announcement, but the Poinsettia Bowl officially announced today that Navy would play in the Poinsettia Bowl if you win enough games (six).

Johnson: Winning enough games is the key phrase I think.

Wagner: Now that it's official can you comment?

Johnson: That's a long way from now. We had a great time when we were there before and it's a great bowl game, I just hope we can work hard enough to be in position to win enough games.

Wagner: What do you think about announcing bowl games before the season? Does it give your kids something to shoot for?

Johnson: No, we already have a lot to play for. Announcing bowl games this early is the nature of the business these days. If our guys aren't hungry to play I don't know if the incentive of a bowl game is going to do anything for them.

Wagner: Last year Army signed this same deal and then they didn't qualify so it can work against you.

Johnson: You have to win enough games and right now we better not be worried about any bowl games. We better be worried about Temple.

Wagner: On another note it seems like every week Mr. Strasemeier sends out a press release that you are playing a game on an odd day of the week. What do you think of the schedule and how it's shaping up? I was a little surprised about playing on a Wednesday. What's your take on it?

Johnson: I'm not real excited about it, but it is what it is.

Wagner: I haven't had a chance to review the schedule yet, but I presume you aren't playing the previous Saturday are you?

Johnson: No. We start the year playing two games on Friday.

Wagner: Is the exposure you get out of playing on those odd days worth it?

Johnson: Are you asking me? My answer would be no. That's just my personal opinion.

Wager: Have you ever played a Wednesday football game since you've been a college coach?

Johnson: No.

Wagner: Let's talk about the slot backs. Last year Zerb Singleton was a very good blocker and that seemed to be his role on the team, but towards the end of the year I thought he broke some really nice runs. Do you feel like Zerb will get a few more carries this year?

Johnson: We don't try and keep Zerb from running the ball. Zerb is a good little player. He can do whatever you ask him do.

Wagner: How about Shun White? I was told last year that he needed to improve his blocking to become a more complete slot back. Has he shown improvement?

Johnson: He's had days. He's very talented, but he needs to be far more consistent. There are days where he will look like an All-American and then there will be days where he looks like he doesn't belong on the field. He's got ability. There's no question about that.

Wagner: Who else at slot back has impressed you?

Johnson: We have the same guys that played last year. Reggie, Shun and Zerb have all played and then behind them Greg Shinego has had a pretty good spring, Bobby Doyle has made some plays, Scott Oswald can do some things.

Wagner: How has John Forbes done coming back from his injury?

Johnson: He's been hurt a little bit lately, but he's done some good things. We have good depth at slot back. We probably have more depth there then we do at any other position.

Wagner: Ricky Moore and Paul Bridgers are working with the first team at tackle since Josh Meek and Andrew McGinn are out. Have those guys gotten better?

Johnson: Yeah, no question. I think they've made progress. They still have a long ways to go, but they have gotten better. My hope is that they will continue to get better and work hard and then Meek and McGinn are going to have to come back and beat them out.

Wagner: Is there anyone else that's shown you anything at tackle?

Johnson: Oh, I don't know. Some of the young guys have done some things. Austin Milke made some plays in the last scrimmage. Richard Marshall plays really hard.

Wagner: Is there a third guy behind Gaskins and Gabbard that looks like they might be able to play?

Johnson: We are working on that.

Wagner: The quarterbacks. When you talk about Kaipo, Jarod and Troy. What do you see as the differences between those three? You talk about Kaipo running the option a little bit better.

Johnson: That's the difference. It is what it is. He is better fundamentally and he's faster.

Wagner: Bryant is kind of shifty.

Johnson: They are different. Jarod has really good feet and he accelerates. I think Jarod has gotten better running the option this spring; there is no question about that.

Wagner: What about Goss?

Johnson: He's big and strong and he understands the offense for the most part. Fundamentally he does OK.

Wagner: What about the local kid, Zingler. Has he shown you anything?

Johnson: Yeah. I think he's had a decent spring. Down the road I think he has a chance.

Wagner: I know you have been running Jarod and Troy with both the first team and the second team to give them that opportunity, but that has left Zingler with all the snaps with the third group. Is that a benefit for him?

Johnson: That only happened the last scrimmage, but yeah that's good. Any time you can get more reps it's a good deal for you and he's made the most of the opportunity. When he's gotten in there he's been productive.

Mids Cruise Past Coppin State, 15-2

SEVERN, Md. – Navy freshman outfielder Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) scored three times and drove in three runs as the Midshipmen slugged past Coppin State, 15-2, at Joe Cannon Stadium on Wednesday night. With the win, Navy improved to 24-12 on the year. The Eagles dropped to 0-29 with the loss.

Wednesday night’s game was delayed an hour and a half, as both teams waited for umpires that were called to work the game after umpiring games in the area earlier in the day. The game was called after seven innings due to rain.

“I’m quite pleased that we were able to get some action for our guys tonight,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “The whole team did a nice job of keeping in the game, not only the players on the field, but the bench as well. Now we focus our attention to our four-game set at Lehigh.”

Speciale’s three runs scored and three RBIs were both career highs, while his double to right-center in the seventh was his second in last-three games. The Navy freshman finished his evening with a 2-for-5 effort at the plate.

Navy took advantage of two Coppin State errors, which led to two unearned runs, in opening up a 5-0 lead after one inning. The Midshipmen extended their advantage to 9-0 in the second, capped by freshman third baseman Drew Lydon’s (White Plains, Md.) two-run double to the gap in left-center.

After the Eagles plated their first run of the game in the fifth, Navy answered with six runs in the seventh. The Midshipmen sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, pounding out four hits, walking three times and once hit by a pitch.

Ten different Mids scored a run, while eight batters recorded a hit and eight drove in at least one run. Junior designated hitter Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI, while sophomore first baseman Jack Ferrick (Stafford, Va.) also posted a 2-for-3 effort at the dish with two walks and a run scored.

The Midshipmen walked eight times on the evening and twice were hit by a pitch, while only striking out twice.

Senior southpaw Daniel Kovalcik (Westwood, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the year in his first start of the year. He yielded only one hit and no walks in two scoreless innings of work with three strikeouts. Freshman Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) logged two innings of relief, while freshman Chris Murray (Navarre, Fla.), freshman Alec Thomas (Kernersville, N.C.) and junior Mark Guadagnini (Virginia Beach, Va.) each threw one inning.

Navy (24-12, 5-3 in the Patriot League) will head on the road to take on defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (11-18-1, 1-7 in the Patriot League) in a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday at Murray H. Goodman Field in Bethlehem, Pa.

Tennis Team to Finish Regular Season this Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team will close out its regular season this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Midshipmen will first face Lehigh Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Lewis Tennis Center in Bethlehem, then will travel to West Point, N.Y., for a Sunday match against Army. The annual Star Match between the two programs is slated to start at 1 p.m.

The weather conditions for Sunday's match will determine its site. The match will either be played outdoors at the Malek Tennis Center or indoors at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Both facilities are located on the Army campus.

"We are looking forward to the weekend and our matches against Lehigh and Army," said Navy head coach John Officer. "The key for us is to play our style of tennis with an offensive mindset. We need to fight for every point, remain calm, and enjoy the competition."

Navy enters the week having posted an 11-10 record on the season and a 2-0 record against Patriot League opponents. The Mids have won their last five matches, with three of those contests coming by scores of 4-3.

Singles player Ramsey Lemaich (Fr., Danville, Calif.) and the No. 1 doubles team of Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) and Johnny Waters (So., Papillion, Neb.) have compiled undefeated records during Navy's five-match winning streak. Lemaich has not dropped a set in winning his last five matches, with all but one of the contests coming at No. 6 singles, while Nelms and Waters have won 40 games and lost just 20 over their five-match winning streak.

Heading into a Thursday match at Bucknell, Lehigh has posted an overall record of 2-9 and a 1-1 mark against Patriot League opponents this season.

Both the Mids and the Mountain Hawks return five of their respective six players who took part in last year's match between the teams, a 6-1 Navy win in Annapolis. Nelms at the No. 1 flight, Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) at No. 3 and Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) at No. 6 all posted straight-set singles victories during the 2006 match against Lehigh.

Army has posted a 9-10 record on the season, but the Black Knights are a perfect 5-0 against Patriot League opponents.

In addition to both Navy and Army recording wins over Bucknell and Colgate this season, each also has lost to Penn and Yale.

Navy recorded a 4-3 victory over Army last year in Annapolis to snap a five-match skid to the Black Knights. After narrowly winning the doubles point thanks to a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles by the team of Nelms and 2006 graduate Brandon Carter, Lai (No. 3), Carter (No. 4) and Stanley Kahl (No. 6) (Sr., Richland, Pa.) all posted straight-set singles victories to allow Navy to record the win over the eventual Patriot League champions.

Army, meanwhile, returns four players who comprised its 2006 lineup against Navy, with John Hoghton (No. 2) and Michael Good (No. 5) winning their respective singles matches over their Navy counterparts last year.

The Mids have lost four-straight matches to Army in West Point, with Navy's last victory over the Black Knights on their home court coming in 1999.

In addition to playing for the Star, the winner of Sunday's match also will likely receive the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. The three-day event runs April 21-23 in Annapolis, with seedings and pairings to be determined after the conclusion of Sunday's matches.

Mids to Race Against Hoyas Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Navy lightweight crew team will begin the second half of its regular season Saturday when the Midshipmen make the short drive to Washington, D.C., to compete against Georgetown on the Potomac River. Racing begins at 7:45 a.m., with the varsity boats taking to the water at 8:30 a.m.

Navy's varsity boat improved its record to 3-1 on the season by defeating both Rutgers and Columbia by four seconds this past Sunday in New Jersey. The victory was one of four on the day compiled by the Mids as the Navy program completed its first sweep of the races this season.

The Mids also posted a four-race sweep of the Hoyas when the teams faced each other last season in Annapolis. Included in the results was a nine-second victory by Navy in the varsity race.

"Georgetown looks to have good speed this year and I believe it will be another close race for our varsity boat," said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. "Our young boat seems to be getting faster each week, so we hope to put our best race together this weekend."

Navy Concludes Season at NCAA Qualifying Meet

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Navy junior all-around gymnast Christopher Tam (Draper, Utah) finished among the top 30 in three disciplines for a 10th-place finish in the all-around as the Midshipmen concluded their season during the second session of the NCAA Qualifying Meet at Penn State?s Rec Center on Thursday evening.

The top-three all-around gymnasts not affiliated with the top-three teams during the session advanced to the all-around national championship tomorrow evening. The top-three gymnasts in each event not already competing as an all-around participant or with a team qualified for the NCAA Championship individual event prelims on Friday night.

Host Penn State paced the field in session two with 218.9 points, followed by Oklahoma?s 218.6 points and Minnesota?s 216.9 points. California?s Kyson Bunthuwong (53.8 points), Nebraska?s Jason Wassung (52.7 points) and Nebraska?s Stephen Tetrault (52.35 points) advanced as the three unattached all-around qualifiers for Friday?s competition.

The NCAA has approved football timing changes that will bring back plays that were lost last season because of rules revisions designed to quicken games.

In effect, the NCAA yesterday returned to the rules used two seasons ago, with the clock starting on a snap after a change of possession rather than when the referee signals the ball ready for play and time beginning on kickoffs only when the ball is legally touched, not when it is kicked....

Navy to Host Army in Star Meet on Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track & field team will host Army in the 81st-annual Star Meet in Annapolis this Saturday, as the Mids look to claim their eighth N-Star during the last-10 years. The action is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. with the hammer throw at Hospital Point, with the remaining events commencing at 11:15 a.m. at Ingram Field.

Heading into the weekend, the all-time series is tied at 40 wins apiece. The Mids own an all-time advantage of 24-18 in Annapolis, including four-straight victories on their home track. Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey has won 11 of his 18 outdoor Star Meets over the Black Knights.

In last year's outdoor Star Meet up in West Point, Army edged Navy by a final score of 105-97. The Midshipmen won six of the 11 track events, including a pair of first and second place performances. However, the Black Knights claimed victory in six of the eight field events.

During this year's indoor Star Meet on the banks of the Hudson, Navy came away with a 95-86 N-Star win over Army. With a victory on Saturday, the Midshipmen would post their 20th indoor and outdoor Star Meet sweep of the Black Knights in program history.

If both the men?s and women?s track & field teams were to defeat Army on Saturday, it would mark the second time in school history that both squads registered an indoor and outdoor Star Meet sweep of the Black Knights, with the other occurrence coming during the 2000 campaign.

For the Mids to win their 41st outdoor N-Star on Saturday, they will look to their runners for significant scoring. The 800-meter run shapes up to be a strong event for Navy, as both juniors Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) and Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.) have qualified for post-season action. Harris recorded the second-fastest time in school history last Friday at the Florida Relays, crossing the finish line in 1:48.86 to qualify for the NCAA East Region Championship. Meekins soon followed Harris in last week's race, posting a time of 1:50.89 to meet the IC4A Championship.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase also boast a pair of IC4A qualifiers for Navy, as junior John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) both recorded season-best marks on their home track two weeks ago. Olsen won the event in the Navy Five-Team Meet with a 9:13.62 clocking, while Niemi immediately followed in second place with a 9:14.86 showing.

Navy heads into Saturday's action with the top-two times in the 110-meter hurdles in comparison to Army's best efforts. Junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai'i) qualified for the IC4A Championship at Ingram Field two weeks ago with a time of 14.81 seconds. Freshman Matthew Hanley (Rapid City, S.D.) registered a 14.7-second clocking in his first effort on Navy's home track less than a month ago against American and Maryland.

The Navy 4x400-meter relay team owns the fastest time in the Patriot League this year, as its 3:11.78 showing two weeks ago is more than three seconds better than Army's quickest effort this season.

In the field, the Mids will look to a pair of juniors that compete in both the shot put and discus throw events. Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) has won the shot put with an IC4A-qualifying distance during each of Navy's four meets this year. He will also advance to the post-season in the discus throw, as he won the event at the Point Loma Invitational one month ago. Classmate Andre Barber (Carrollton, Texas) has finished a close second to Hunter in both events and nearly met the IC4A standard in the discus throw at the Point Loma Invitational.

The javelin throw figures to be a closely-contested event between two solid competitors. Navy junior Bo Lawson (Fredon, N.J.) uncorked a NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 61.64 meters during his season-opening performance. His counterpart from Army, Kevin Kumlein, released a throw of 59.27 meters earlier this year.

Following this Saturday's Star Meet, the Midshipmen will return to action with the Penn Relays at Franklin Field on April 26-28.

Mids Aiming for N-Star on Saturday Against Army

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In the 21st-annual women’s outdoor track & field Star Meet, Navy will host Army on Saturday in Annapolis for the opportunity to claim its third-straight N-Star. The meet is slated to begin with the hammer throw at Hospital Point at 9:15 a.m., followed by the men’s meet. The action for the women will resume at 2:00 p.m. at Ingram Field.

Despite having won five of the last-seven outdoor Star Meets, Navy owns an all-time record of 7-13 against the Black Knights. The Midshipmen have claimed victory in four of their last-five outdoor Star Meet competitions held in Annapolis, dating back to the 1995 season.

In last year’s outdoor Star Meet in West Point, Navy posted a thrilling 104-99 victory over Army. The Midshipmen held a one-point lead at the end of the track portion of the meet with two events in progress. The visiting Mids won both of those events, the triple jump and discus throw, to claim the five-point triumph. Navy finished the afternoon with 10 first-place performances.

Earlier this year during the indoor Star Meet held at Army’s Gillis Field House, Navy rolled to an impressive 107-73 win over the Black Knights. Navy’s 34-point margin of victory was the largest in seven years, as it claimed first place in 12 of the 17 events. A win on Saturday would give the Midshipmen their sixth indoor and outdoor Star Meet sweep of Army in program history, all of which have taken place over the last-11 years.

If both the men’s and women’s track & field teams were to defeat Army on Saturday, it would mark the second time in school history that both squads registered an indoor and outdoor Star Meet sweep of the Black Knights, with the other occurrence coming during the 2000 campaign.

Navy’s performance on the track has been a bright spot this season and could up to be one again on Saturday. Navy senior sprinter Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.) has been dominant in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events, as she has combined for four first-place performances. She has registered three of the five-fastest times in school history in the 100-meter dash already this spring, highlighted by an 11.88-second clocking in the Navy Invitational. She also raced to a time of 24.70 seconds in the 200-meter dash on her home track last month, which tied for the second-best showing in program history.

Navy junior Vicki Moore (Burke, Va.) and senior Erin Demchko (Pearl River, N.Y.) have provided a 1-2 punch in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter run events this season. Both runners produced season-best marks at the Colonial Relays last weekend with times under 2:17.00. Demchko raced to a 4:43.84 showing in the 1,500-meter run on her home track one month ago and Moore placed fourth in the event at the 2007 Military Track & Field Championship two weeks back.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase shapes up as another strong event, as junior Kyleigh Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) and sophomore Maureen Dooley (Durham, Conn.) lead the way for the Mids. At the 2007 Military Track & Field Championship, Millhouse and Dooley finished first and second, respectively, as both runners completed the race in less than 11:32.0.

Rounding out the track events, senior Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) and junior Michelle Bostic (Rockwall, Texas) will look to guide the Mids to victory in the hurdles events. Andrews has won the 100-meter hurdles twice this year, with her best showing coming at home with a time of 14.38 seconds. Bostic placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at the Colonial Relays with a solid 1:02.55 clocking.

Not to be overshadowed, Navy’s participants in the field will also aim to tally significant points on Saturday. In the pole vault, junior Jacquelyn Charnigo (Medina, Ohio) and Andrews have qualified for post-season action. Charnigo met the NCAA regional standard with a clearance of 3.80 meters two weeks ago at the Military Track & Field Championship. In Annapolis, Andrews posted her highest clearance of the year at 3.65 meters, an ECAC-qualifying mark.

The high jump features three Navy competitors that have surpassed the 1.60-meter bar this year. Charnigo leads the way with a team-best height of 1.65 meters, while junior Elizabeth Wrona (Fairfax Station, Va.) and sophomore Katie Berkey (Tempe, Ariz.) have both cleared 1.60 meters.

Following this Saturday’s Star Meet, the Midshipmen will split up their squad to compete in two meets next Saturday, April 21. Navy will partake in both the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., and the Greyhound Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's lacrosse team hits the road on Saturday for a matchup with Villa Julie College in Baltimore, beginning at 11:00 am. The Mids have won six games in a row and currently sport an 11-3 record. Villa Julie enters the contest with a 4-9 overall record and has lost four games in a row.

Navy is coming off a 14-5 win over the Maryland Club team last Friday and has won six straight games by an average of 9.2 goals per game. In that contest, Amanda Towey tallied six points (3 g, 3 a), while freshman Erin Rawlick tallied five goals. Natalie Blandon recorded 10 saves in goal for the Mids, who improved to 10-1 on the year against non-Division I teams.

Towey paces Navy with a remarkable 75 points, leading the team with 52 goals and 23 assists. A pair of freshmen, Rawlick and Mary Ruttum, have contributed 60 and 49 points, respectively. Elise Chapdelaine has scored 49 points, while Valerie Cappelaere is in double figures with 10 points. Kaylene Klingenstein has scored 44 points, but will miss the remainder of the year with a knee injury suffered in a April 1 win over Pittsburgh.

In goal, Blandon has stopped 136 shots for a save percentage of .560. Vanessa Nieves has a save percentage of .500 (9 saves), while Ellyn Creasey has made 12 saves for a save percentage of .400.

Villa Julie enters with a 4-9 overall record and has lost four games in a row, including consecutive games by two or fewer goals. Cat Connelly leads a balanced attack with 33 points (21 g, 12 a) and seven other players have scored at least 14 points. Kaitlin Brzozowski is saving 44.4 percent of her shots and has a GAA of 13.50 in the cage. As a team, Villa Julie is averaging 11.92 goals per game and giving up 13.77.

Navy will return home for its final game of the year against a Division I team as Davidson comes calling on Wednesday, April 18 at 4:00 pm. It will mark the first time that Navy will play a D-I team at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy will then play in the Mid-Atlantic Women's Lacrosse League Tournament on April 21-22 at a site to be determined.

Navy Golf to Compete in 15-Team Princeton Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy golf team will be back in action this weekend when it travels to the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J. to take part in the Princeton Invitational. Fifteen teams will compete in the 54-hole event beginning Saturday in what will be the 20th time the Princeton Invitational has been played.

In addition to Navy, this year's tournament field includes Columbia, George Mason, George Washington, Georgetown, Penn, Princeton, Rider, Rutgers, St. Bonaventure, St. John's, Saint Joseph's, Temple, Towson and Villanova. Columbia claimed the team title by two strokes over Princeton a year ago, while the Lions' Chris Condello returns to defend his individual crown.

Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) led the Mids to a 12th-place finish at last year's Princeton Invitational, as Navy produced a 47-over par 615, just four strokes behind Liberty and St. John's who tied for 10th. Hardie, who was playing in just his third tournament for the Midshipmen, led the way for Navy with an 8-over par 150. The rookie shot a 6-over par 77 in the opening round, but gained ground on the competition with a 2-over par 72 on the final day to finish in a three-way tie for 15th.

Navy, who will tee-off at 7:45 on Saturday morning, is led by junior Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) who owns a 75.8 stroke average among the six events in which he has played.
Scouting Lehigh

The Lehigh Mountain Hawks enters the weekend with an 11-18-1 record overall and 1-7 in the Patriot League this season. Lehigh advanced to the championship game of the Liberty Bell Classic, where it fell to Lafayette at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.

After taking one of four at Bucknell to open the league slate, Lehigh was swept in a four-game set at Holy Cross. In the first game of the series against the Crusaders, the Mountain Hawks were no-hit by Scott Hampe. Lehigh will be looking to snap a six-game losing streak this weekend.

As a team, the Mountain Hawks are hitting .263 and have averaged 5.5 runs per game. Matt Reitz leads the offense with a .371 batting average and .489 on-base percentage, while Liam O’Connor is hitting .361 with a team-best nine doubles. Nick Bet has also provided power for Lehigh, as he has belted six doubles, two triples, two home runs and driven in 23.

Lehigh’s pitching staff owns a 5.57 team ERA, while opponents have batted at a .307 clip. RHP Joe Matteo and RHP Joel Hockman each have started eight games on the hill, while LHP Gregory Angelo is slated for his third start of the year and RHP Bill McDonnell is scheduled to make his second start of the season. RHP Greg Mortka has been solid out of the bullpen in 12 games this year, as he owns a 3-2 record with a 3.48 ERA in 20.2 innings of work.

Last Year Against the Mountain Hawks

Last year’s Patriot League champion, Lehigh took all four games from Navy in Annapolis in 2006. The Mountain Hawks limited the Midshipmen to four runs or less in each of the four games. In the opener, Navy battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh to tie the game, but Lehigh manufactured a run in the eighth for the win. The Midshipmen hit well on the weekend, as the team collectively hit .295 with seven doubles and a home run. However, Lehigh’s offense proved too much, as it scored 29 runs and pounded out 47 hits.

All-Time Series with Lehigh

Navy makes the trip to Bethlehem, Pa., with a 47-28 advantage in the all-time series with Lehigh. The Midshipmen own a slim 16-12 lead in games played at Lehigh, but have won at least two games at Murray H. Goodman Field during each of their last-six four-game Patriot League sets at Lehigh.

Scouting Georgetown

Georgetown heads into this weekend’s action at Notre Dame with a 12-21 overall record and have dropped five-consecutive contests. The Hoyas are hitting .250 as a team, but have swiped 68 bases in 33 games this year (2.06 SB/game). Mark McLaughlin has paced the offense with a .346 batting average with 11 doubles. Georgetown’s pitching staff owns a 4.73 team ERA and have allowed the opposition to hit .281 this year. The Hoyas have walked only 99 and struck out 237 this year, good for a 2.39 strikeout/walk ratio.

The Mids and the Hoyas met on Feb. 28 at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, with Navy claiming a 2-1 victory. Navy’s Oliver Drake yielded only one unearned run in 6.2 innings of work, while reliever James Lee got the win with two innings of hitless, shutout work.

All-Time Record vs. Big East Conference Schools

The Midshipmen own an all-time mark of 138-87-4 (.611) against teams currently affiliate with the Big East Conference. Navy has played Connecticut (1-6), Georgetown (55-36), Louisville (1-1), Notre Dame (3-8-1), Pittsburgh (17-5), Rutgers (8-3), St. John’s (0-1-1), Seton Hall (6-4), Villanova (29-9-2) and West Virginia (18-14) during its 112-year program history. The Mids have not met Cincinnati nor South Florida on the baseball diamond.

Scouting George Mason

George Mason has won five of its last-seven games heading into the weekend, as it possesses a 16-17 overall record. The Patriots have relied upon their offense for success, as they are batting .319 and slugging .503 as a team this year. Scott Krieger, Chris Fournier and Justin Bour have each slugged 10 or more home runs this season. However, George Mason’s pitching has been victimized at the tune of a 6.24 ERA and a .325 opponents batting average. When on base, opponents have been successful in 50-of-72 stolen base attempts.

Navy and George Mason met on March 20 at Hap Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va., as the Patriots out-slugged the Mids, 12-10. The Midshipmen pounded out 15 hits, but committed four errors which led to four unearned runs and proved to be the difference on the day.

All-Time Record vs. Colonial Athletic Association Schools

The Midshipmen own an all-time mark of 81-46-1 (.637) against teams currently affiliated with the Colonial Athletic Association. Navy has played George Mason (15-12), William & Mary (19-7), Old Dominion (2-7), VCU (1-0), UNC-Wilmington (0-2), Towson (22-9-1), James Madison (1-0) and Delaware (21-9) during its 112-year program history. The Midshipmen have not met Northeastern, Georgia State nor Hofstra on the baseball diamond.

One Bizarre Week

The past week has proven to be one of the strangest stretches in recent memory, as games were postponed, cancelled and delayed for rather uncommon reasons.

Navy’s scheduled doubleheader with Lafayette on Saturday, April 7, was postponed due to snowfall that fell during the overnight hours. Over the past 30 years, Annapolis has averaged a trace of snow in the month of April. On Tuesday, April 10, Navy’s night game at UMBC was cancelled, as the lights failed to turn on. One day later at Joe Cannon Stadium, Navy waited an hour and half past the 6 p.m. start time against Coppin State for emergency umpires to arrive from games called an hour-plus away from the stadium earlier in the day.

Busting Out the Road Brooms

Navy recorded a four-game sweep of Patriot League foe Holy Cross up in Worcester, Mass., to open the league slate this year. The four-game sweep of a league opponent on the road is Navy’s first since it took four from the Crusaders in the Bay State on April 28-29, 1995.

Starting Hot in the Patriot League

Navy owns an all-time record of 42-12 (.778) following its Patriot League season-opening weekend, including an 12-3 (.800) mark in its first league game of the year. The Midshipmen have started the league slate with a 4-0 record in back-to-back years for the second time in school history (other time being the 1994 and ‘95 seasons).

Going 4-0 to Start in the Patriot League

Navy’s four victories to open its action in the Patriot League were one shy of tying the school record of five wins set during the 1994, ‘95 and ‘06 campaigns.

Navy’s History of Success in the Patriot League

Despite joining the Patriot League two years after it began competing in baseball, Navy has won more league postseason and regular season titles than any other team in league history. The Midshipmen, who joined the league in 1993, have won five Patriot League titles and been crowned regular season champions on eight occasions. Navy’s all-time winning percentage of .597 (173-117) in Patriot League action ranks second among teams currently affiliated with the league.

Navy Tabbed Second in Patriot League Preseason Poll

The Navy baseball team has been picked to tie for second place in the 2007 Patriot League Preseason Poll, voted on by each school’s head coach and sports information contact. Five of the six teams in the Patriot League received a first-place vote in the poll.

For the third-consecutive year, Army (30-20-1, 10-10 PL/fourth) has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league with seven first-place ballots and 46 points. Lafayette (27-24, 11-9 PL/third) and Navy (32-21-1, 8-12 PL/fifth) each accumulated 34 points to tie for second, as the Leopards received two first-place votes and the Midshipmen collected one. Bucknell (24-24, 13-7 PL/tied-first) tallied 30 points and a first-place vote, while defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (28-28, 13-7 PL/tied-first) came in fifth with 24 points and one first-place ballot and Holy Cross (16-26-1, 5-15 PL/sixth) rounds out the league with 12 points.

Second-Youngest Team in Patriot League

The 2007 Navy baseball team ranks as the second-youngest team in the Patriot League this season, highlighted by its 16 freshmen and only five seniors. Only Lehigh, last year’s league champion, welcomes more new faces this year, as nearly half (17-of-35) of its team is comprised of freshmen.

Freshmen Making Immediate Impact

Navy has relied heavily upon its freshman class during its successful start to the 2007 season. The Midshipmen have started no fewer than two freshmen in all-36 games this season. On six occasions, the Mids have slotted six freshmen in the starting lineup, going 5-1 in those contests. Navy has started six freshmen during five of the last-20 contests.

Six-Pack of Patriot League Rookie of the Week Awards

Navy claimed Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week honors for the sixth time this year on April 10 to tie the league record of six rookie-of-the-week accolades earned by the 2004 Army squad.

Steven Soares (Parkland, Fla.) is the first Navy player to earn rookie-of-the-week honors twice, while Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.), Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.), Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) and Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) have each won the award once.

Patriot League Rookie of the Week: Five-for-Five

Navy won the Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award for five-consecutive weeks to open the year. The 2007 Midshipmen became the first team in Patriot League history to win one award for five-straight weeks, topping Navy’s four-consecutive pitcher-of-the-week accolades during the 1999 season.

19 Non-League Wins

Navy’s 19 non-league wins this season ranks as the second-highest l in school history, only five behind last year’s 24-win output during out-of-league games. Navy’s 18 wins prior to the start of Patriot League play also ranks second in program history, only one win shy of the record set by the 2006 squad.

Navy Reaches 1,600 All-Time Wins

Navy registered its 1,600th victory during its 112-year program history with a 2-1 win over Monmouth on March 11 in Annapolis. The Midshipmen entered the 2007 campaign as the 48th-winningest team in the nation, having won 60-percent of their all-time contests.

Kosty Second-Quickest to 50 Wins with Navy

With Navy’s 16-3 win over Mount St. Mary’s on March 27, second-year Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos became the second-fastest Navy skipper to get to 50 wins during his tenure with the Mids. Kostacopoulos’ 50th-career win with Navy came in his 81st game at the helm for the Mids (50-30-1), only four games behind legendary head coach Joe Duff, who won his 50th game in his 77th contest on May 1, 1965 (50-25-2).

Kosty Gets Career Win No. 550

Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos picked up his 550th career victory with a 9-7 victory over Buffalo on March 15 in Annapolis. The 18-year veteran head coach reached the 550-win mark after spending his first-seven years at Providence in 1990-96, and nine seasons at Maine from 1997-05, before taking over the reigns of the Midshipmen baseball program in 2006.

Kosty Likes Them Close

Since taking over the reigns of the Navy baseball program last season, head coach Paul Kostacopoulos has been quite successful in one-run affairs, posting a record of 20-7 (.741). The Midshipmen are off to a 9-3 start in one-run games in 2007 after going 11-4 last season.

Mids Use the Long Ball

After hitting four home runs during its first-26 games of the season, Navy pounded eight home runs over a five-game stretch from March 27 to April 1. Six different Midshipmen had a hand in on the act during this run, highlighted by Mitch Harris’ (Mt. Holly, N.C.) home runs in back-to-back-to-back games at Holy Cross. Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas), Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.), Kendall Bolt (Stockton, Calif.), Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) and Jack Ferrick (Stafford, Va.) each went deep in Navy’s 16-3 win at Mount St. Mary’s on March 27.

Harris Homered in Back-to-Back-to-Back Games

Navy junior Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) became just the second player in school history to belt a home run in three-consecutive games when he performed the feat at Holy Cross on March 31-April 1. The only other player to hit a round-tripper in back-to-back-to-back games was Mark Zematis at East Carolina on March 4-5, 2000.

Harris is the first player in program history to hit a four-bagger in three-straight Patriot League games.

Harris Ranking Among Four Career Strikeout Categories

Junior right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) ranks among Navy’s top-five pitchers in career strikeouts, career strikeouts per nine innings and career strikeouts before his senior year, as well as fifth in Patriot League career strikeouts. Harris ranks fifth on the career strikeouts list with 211, which is also the second-highest total in school history before his senior campaign. His 12.20 career strikeouts per nine innings ranks first all-time, more than two strikeouts per game better than the second-best mark.

Hollins Moving Up Stolen Base List

Junior center fielder Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) ranks fourth on the career stolen bases list with 44 during his first two-plus seasons. Hollins is just the second player in school history to steal 10 or more bases in a year for three-consecutive seasons. Craig Candeto is the only other player to achieve this feat, swiping 10-plus bases during each of his four seasons from 2001-04.

Melton: Saving the Game

Navy freshman reliever JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) owns the Navy freshman saves record with seven saves this season. He broke the record of four saves, previously held by Todd Bizba in 1985. Melton’s seven saves also places him second on the all-time single-season saves list, only behind Ryan Hefner’s 10 saves last year. The Navy freshman’s seven saves also places him for third on the career saves list and matches the seventh-highest single-season mark in Patriot League history.

Home Sweet Home

The Midshipmen are slated to play 30 home games at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, which would break the record of 28 home contests set last year. Of the 30 home games, 19 were played before April 1.

Field Dedication Set for April 28 vs. Bucknell

Prior to the start of Navy’s April 28 doubleheader against Bucknell at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, the field will officially be dedicated to the Terwilliger Brothers for their generous contributions to the Navy baseball program.

Ron Terwilliger was a three-year starter at second base from 1961-63 and hit .383 during his junior year in Annapolis. After graduating with honors, he served in the Navy before getting his MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. In 1986, he became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Trammell Crow Residential, a national real estate company that is the largest developer of multi-family housing in the United States.

Bruce Terwilliger was a star pitcher on the mound for the Midshipmen during his three years with the varsity baseball team from 1962-64. As a sophomore in 1962, he went 8-0 with a miniscule 2.29 ERA in 59.0 innings. He currently is only one of five pitchers in school history to post an undefeated record with five-plus decisions in a year. After he was commissioned into the Navy in 1964, he served and achieved the rank of Commander (O-5) prior to his retirement after 20 years of service.

With the generous support of the Terwilliger brothers, Navy’s home field went under massive renovations in the fall of 2005, highlighted by the installation of FieldTurf, 1,000 chair-back seats and a state-of-the-art hitting facility with several other amenities. As a result, Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium has become of the premier facilities in the East to play and watch a baseball game.

Transcript Of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's Comments following practice on Friday, April 13

In Attendance: Michael Jenkins (Comcast SportsNet) and Dave Ausiello (gomidshipmen.com)

Jenkins: You have about a week left in spring practice. How pleased are you in the effort you've seen so far?

Johnson: It's been give and take. I don't know if I'm ever completely satisfied, because you have a standard that you shoot for. We've made some progress in some areas and in other areas we have a long way to go.

Jenkins: What about that standard? You had an incredible senior class last year and it's going to be difficult to replace those guys. It's almost like starting a new era.

Johnson: It will be interesting to see. That's why you play every year. Each team takes on their own identity and we will see what identity this team takes. I think there is some talent; it's just a question if they have the same desire and work ethic.

Jenkins: How much does it help that you've set that standard of going to the White House every year. I'm sure that rubs off on everybody else.

Johnson: Well, you hope it does. You would rather for it to be that way than the other way. It's really fragile and it can change really quickly. We have to understand how we got to where we are and continue to work hard to try and stay there.

Jenkins: What about the bowl loss. Has that stuck with you or served as any motivation or do you just move on from it?

Johnson: You just move on. It's a different team. You think about it after the game, but after that it's over.

Jenkins: Do any of the guys use it as motivation that you essentially proved in that game, win or lose, that you can play with anybody?

Johnson: There are no moral victories and I don't think anybody even thinks about it. That game is over. Once we got started this spring this is a different team and they can make their own destiny and their own history.

Jenkins: What about losing nine guys on defense? You have quite a few holes to fill.

Johnson: It's a struggle. It's very similar to a couple of years ago when we lost a bunch of guys on offense. We have a lot of young guys over there that are going to have to grow up really fast.

Jenkins: On offense you didn't lose as many players, how much does it help to have Kaipo back at quarterback with some experience?

Johnson: Any time you have guys that have played coming back it helps. We have gotten the other quarterbacks a ton of reps this spring. Jarod Bryant has made a lot of improvement and Troy Goss has had a good spring so we've got several guys we feel good about at quarterback.

Jenkins: What about Kaipo specifically?

Johnson: He's done OK. He's kind of been bumped and bruised a little bit and we've held him out a lot. He's probably played less this spring than he did last spring.

Ausiello: Coach, to what extent do you think a team's personality is a reflection of the coach's personality?

Johnson: Oh, I don't know. I'm sure it transcends through, but each team is different and each team reacts differently. That's the neat thing about starting over each year.

Ausiello: Do you think with Coach Calhoun taking over at Air Force that the Navy-Air Force rivalry may start anew with all the bitterness of the past forgotten?

Johnson: I don't know. I don't know that I would categorize it as bitterness. They had beaten Navy for a long time and when we started winning they didn't like it much and I don't blame them. If they start beating us we won't like it much either.

Ausiello: In a matter of weeks you went from the youngest Service Academy coach to the oldest, do you have any advice for your younger peers?

Johnson: Not really. It's a "What have you done for me lately" business and with what happened to Coach DeBerry it shows that. What he accomplished at Air Force is unreal when you think about it. Having coached here I know how hard it was. He built a tremendous program and a tremendous legacy there.

Ausiello: In prior springs you've said that your better teams have been the ones where the defense has dominated in the spring, but with losing so many people on defense can you really have that same expectation and if the defense isn't dominant does it really tell you that much at this point?

Johnson: Any time you are in the spring you would rather have a situation where both sides win some and we've had situations in drills where both sides of have gotten the best of it. We just have to grow up really fast. Usually in spring practice, because you go up against each other for four weeks, you would like to think it would be harder to move the ball, as you get further along in the spring.

Ausiello: You have two scrimmages left, what else are you looking for as you wind up spring ball?

Johnson: Just try and get better and try to set the depth chart so we have some idea coming out of spring where to start in the fall and there are going to be some positions that are still going to be wide open.
