Navy Completes Series Sweep of Lehigh on Monday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy freshman starting pitchers Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.) and Yale Eckert (La Selva Beach, Calif.) combined for 14.1 innings of work with 13 strikeouts as the Midshipmen completed a four-game series sweep of Lehigh during Monday’s twinbill at Terwilliger Brother Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, winning by scores of 7-2 and 8-3.

The Midshipmen improved to 28-12 on the year and 9-3 in Patriot League action. The 28 victories currently stand as the sixth-highest total during the program’s 112-year history. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 11-22-1 overall and 1-11 in league play.

Navy’s four-game sweep of Lehigh was its second of the 2007 Patriot League campaign, as the Midshipmen opened league action by taking all four games at Holy Cross on March 31-April 1. The only other team in school history to post a pair of four-game sweeps in league play during one season was the 1995 squad, who set the school record for wins (34) and went on to the NCAA East Region Championship.

Monday’s doubleheader was moved to Annapolis after heavy rains involved with the strong Nor’easter that pounded the Mid-Atlantic region rendered Lehigh’s home field, Murray H. Goodman Field, unplayable for Sunday and Monday. Both teams battled through some adverse conditions on Monday, as the winds were sustained at 30 mph and that occasionally gusted over 50 mph.

“As I have said before, it’s extremely difficult to win four games in a weekend,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “With the mental and physical toll to play win all four games, you have to be pleased.

“We are definitely getting better. You always hope that’s the case going into the final part of the regular season. The younger guys are playing better and the older guys have stepped it up a level.”

Drake battled through some tough innings early on to earn the victory in the opener and improved to 2-1 on the year. He scattered five hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, with two walks and a season-best seven strikeouts on the afternoon. The freshman right-hander faced only one batter over the minimum between the third and sixth innings.

“Oliver did a great job for us,” said Kostacopoulos. “He wasn’t quite on early, but he really settled in during that four-inning stretch between the third and the sixth. He really showed me something on the mound. We grabbed the lead and he wasn’t going to let it go.”

After Lehigh took an early 1-0 advantage in the first, Navy tied the ballgame at one in the second. Freshman Drew Lydon led off with a single and came home to score on sophomore Joshua Martinez’s (Denver, Colo.) double down the left field line.

The score would remain tied at one in the fourth, until the Mids plated four runs off Lehigh starter Bill McDonnell. With two outs and nobody on, freshman Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.) walked and senior B.J. Bickel (Benson, N.C.) was hit by a pitch. Junior Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled in Soares to give the Mids their first lead of the game. After senior captain Michael Garcia (Kailua, Hawai’i) walked to load the bases, junior Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) delivered a bases-clearing double to the gap in right center.

The Mids extended their lead to 7-1 in the fifth with a pair of insurance runs. Martinez laced his second double of the game down the left field line to score Lydon, who reached with a single. Martinez moved to third on a groundout and came home on a wild pitch.

Martinez finished the opener 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Hollins, Harris and Lydon each produced a pair of base knocks. Martinez and Harris each hit two doubles for the Mids in game one.

In the nightcap, Eckert produced his best showing during his young collegiate career to improve to 3-0 in Patriot League action this season. The Navy southpaw hurled eight innings of six-hit baseball, as he walked only one and struck out a season-high six batters. Eckert yielded only two base hits and faced only two over the minimum over his final-five innings of the hill.

“Yale gave up six hits and they really didn’t hit him hard,” commented Kostacopoulos. “He pitched well and got out of some jams early on, especially during the third. He was getting stronger as the game went on, and I truly thought his better innings were from the fourth through the eighth.”

Navy’s offense staked Eckert an early 2-0 cushion after the opening half-inning of play. Harris singled in Garcia, who walked and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and would score one batter later, as junior Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) singled through the left side.

However, Lehigh would take the lead in the third with some well-placed balls. The Mountain Hawks led off with a single to center, a bloop single down the right field line and an infield single off the end of the bat to load the bases. Lehigh scored its first run on a fielder’s choice and claimed a 3-2 lead on a two-run single to left.

The Midshipmen rallied again with two outs and nobody on in the fifth to grab the lead for good. Hamilton and Martinez each singled to set the stage for freshman Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.), who doubled down the right field line to score both runs.

Navy tacked on to its lead with a four-run sixth inning that made the score 8-3. Harris delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded and Hamilton drilled a double to straightaway center that plated a pair of Midshipmen.

Hamilton finished game two 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs to lead Navy’s 12-hit attack. Harris, Martinez and Lydon each registered their second multi-hit performance of the afternoon in the nightcap. Harris’ three RBIs in game two pushed his season total to 42, tying him for 10th place on the all-time single-season list with Tony Mauro in 1999.

The Midshipmen will return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md., to take on Georgetown in a 7 p.m. start.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's lacrosse team will host its first-ever game against a Division I opponent on Wednesday, as Davidson comes calling to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, starting at 4:00 pm. The Mids enter the contest with a 12-3 mark, while Davidson is 2-8.

Navy is coming off another strong offensive effort in a win over Villa Julie College, outscoing the Mustangs, 17-10, on Saturday. Freshmen Erin Rawlick and Mary Ruttum combined for 11 of Navy's 17 goals and scored 14 points between them. Junior Amanda Towey scored seven points on one goal and six assists, while Elise Chapdelaine contributed four points (3 g, 1 a). Sarah Bushong and Valerie Cappelaere rounded out the scoring with a goal each. In goal, Natalie Blandon made eight saves, while Vanessa Nieves stopped one shot in a reserve role.

Towey leads the Mids with 82 points (53 g, 29 a). Rawlick follows her with 68 points (51 g, 17 a), while Ruttum has added 55 points (37 g, 18 a). Elise Chapdelaine has scored 53 points (45 g, 8 a) and Cappelaere is in double figures with 11 points (10 g, 1 a). Junior Kaylene Klingenstein has scored 44 points this year, but will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered against Pittsburgh on April 1.

In goal, Natalie Blandon has recorded 144 saves for a percentage of .558. Ellyn Creasey and Vanessa Nieves have combined for 22 saves in reserve roles.

Davidson enters the contest with a 2-8 overall record, but has won two in a row after losing its first eight games of the year. The Wildcats have defeated St. Mary's (Calif.) (17-10) and Pfeiffer (11-9). This will be Davidson's first contest in 13 games, since its win over Pfeiffer. Davidson does have some close losses in 2007, falling to Duquesne in three overtimes and George Washington by a pair of goals. Davidson also lost to American, 9-5, while Navy dropped an 11-2 exhibition decision to the Eagles on Feb. 11.

As a team, the Wildcats are being outscored by almost four goals per game, allowing 11.31 goals per outing. Becky Horton and Jen Crawford lead a balanced Davidson attack with 15 points, while three others have scored in double-figures. Michelle Pav and Laura Johnson have split time in goal. Pav has the better numbers of the two, recording a 10.36 GAA and a save percentage of .459.

The Mids will be in action next on April 21-22, when they compete in the Mid-Atlantic Women's Lacrosse League Championships, at a site to be determined.

Navy to Play Host to League Tennis Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- By virtue of earning the tournament's top seed with a 5-0 regular season league record, the U.S. Naval Academy will play host to the Patriot League Tennis Championship this weekend in Annapolis. The tournament's three quarterfinal matches will be played Saturday, followed by the two semifinal matches Sunday and the championship match Monday.

Weather permitting, all matches will be played outdoors on the Navy Tennis Courts, with the nearby Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club in Gambrills serving as the alternate site should weather force play indoors.

Due to the security restrictions currently in place at the Naval Academy, vehicle access to The Yard will be limited throughout the three days of the tournament. Only those vehicles with Department of Defense stickers will be allowed to drive onto the Naval Academy grounds. All other fans will need to either park outside of the gates and walk through the security checkpoint inside of gate one, or else park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5.) and ride the free shuttle bus to and from the matches. Shuttle buses will be available beginning 30 minutes prior to the first match of the day.

Fans parking at the stadium are asked to provide extra time for themselves Saturday as the venue will also be playing host to Navy's annual spring football game at 12 Noon.

Whether driving their own vehicle, walking on or riding the shuttle bus, all visitors over the age of 16 will be asked to show a government issued identification card (like a drivers license) before they are permitted onto the campus.

In addition to playing host to the tournament, Navy also earned a first-round bye for garnering the No. 1 seed in the seven-team field.

Saturday's opening round matches feature No. 4 Bucknell (2-3 Patriot League record) playing No. 5 Lehigh (1-4) at 8 a.m., No. 2 Army (5-1) will face No. 7 Holy Cross (0-3) at 11:30 a.m. and No. 3 Colgate (4-2) will play No. 6 Lafayette (1-4) at 3 p.m.

Navy will face the winner of the Bucknell / Lehigh quarterfinal match Sunday at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal match of the day. The Mids have defeated both the Bison and the Mountain Hawks by scores of 7-0 this season.

The second semifinal match will begin Sunday at 2 p.m., with the two semifinal winners meeting Monday at 1 p.m. in the title tilt.

This year marks the first time since 2001 that the entire league will compete together at the league championship. The previous five seasons saw just the top-four teams in the league advance to the event.

Navy will be in search of its fifth Patriot League title, but its first since 1999. The Mids have previously won league crowns in 1996, '97, '98 and '99. Since last winning the league title, Navy has reached the championship match in both 2000 and '01, and have advanced to the semifinal round in each of the last five years.

The only previous time Navy has served as the host school for the championship was in 1999 when the Mids won the last of their four-straight league crowns.

Prior to Sunday's match, the Mids will recognize their three-member senior class of Stanley Kahl (Richland, Pa.), Nate Malnati (Greeley, Colo.) and team captain Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz.) in a brief ceremony.

It’s great for the Naval Academy and fans of Navy football already know the Midshipmen will play in the Poinsettia Bowl in December.

The Mids announced last week that they made agreement to play in the event next Decemeber if they win enough games next fall.

For what it’s worth, it gives the fans the opportunity to get the cheaper flights to San Diego that are available when they are purchased more than 30 days before the travel date....

Patriot League Golf Championship Moves to Bucknell

Center Valley, Pa. (Apr. 17, 2007) - Due to recent rainfall in the Northeast, the 2007 Patriot League Men's Golf Championship has been relocated to Bucknell University, on April 21-22, Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich announced Tuesday.

The United States Military Academy, located in West Point, N.Y., was slated to host the championship at its golf course. However, due to the significant rainfall, the course conditions forced to championship to move.

"We would like to thank all of our member institutions for their understanding for the change in location for this year's Patriot League Championship," said Femovich. "In particular, we would like to thank both Bucknell and the U.S. Naval Academy for offering to host this year's championship. Army has worked hard to host this event, and felt due to the excessive rainfall that it could not showcase their outstanding golf facilities for this year's championship."

The 54-hole event will be played at the Bucknell University Golf Course. It begins with 36 holes of play on Saturday, April 21, beginning at 8 a.m. The final round of the tournament is slated for Sunday, April 22, also starting at 8 a.m. The Patriot League team champion receives an automatic bid into one of the three NCAA Regional tournaments.

Bucknell has hosted three previous Patriot League Championships (1994, 2000 and 2005). Two years ago in Lewisburg, Pa., Army won the team title, while Charlie Waddell of Bucknell won individual honors. The Bison are the defending Patriot League champions, and Waddell has captured the past two Patriot League individual titles.

Andrews and Whipple Earn ECAC and Patriot League Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. & CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Following their efforts in Navy's 107-96 N-Star victory over Army last Saturday in women's track & field, seniors Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) and Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) were named ECAC and Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week and Track Athlete of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday evening.

For Andrews, this marks the fourth time she has been recognized by the Patriot League, the second time this outdoor season, and the second occasion she earned ECAC honors. The Navy senior had a memorable Saturday afternoon in her final Army-Navy Star Meet of her career, as she pushed her career individual win total over Army to 12 with three victories, leading the Midshipmen to a 107-96 victory over the Black Knights.

Andrews won the pole vault with a program-record height of 13'3/4" (3.98 meters), a half of an inch better than the record held by Amanda Hasenauer in 2003 and more than seven inches higher than her previous personal record. In her third and final try at 12'10-1/2", Andrews easily cleared over the bar and went for the school record on her next height, clearing that bar on her first attempt.

In her first event of the day, Andrews claimed first in the long jump with a distance of 18'10-3/4", only half an inch away from tying the school record shared by Michelle Schiller and Joanne Uwujaren. While competing in both the pole vault and long jump, the Navy senior also placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.36 seconds.

Whipple was named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career and the first during the outdoor slate. The ECAC recognition was the first for the product of Duxbury, Mass.

Making her first appearance during the outdoor season, Whipple won the 5,000-meter run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 17:05.97, the fifth-fastest clocking in program history. Her time on Saturday was more than 30 seconds faster than Army's fastest runner.

The Midshipmen will split up their squad this Saturday to compete in two meets. Some of the squad will head to the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., while the remaining contingent while trek north to Bethlehem, Pa., to partake in the Greyhound Invitational.

Yale Eckert Named Patriot League Rookie of the Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy baseball freshman left-handed pitcher Yale Eckert (La Selva Beach, Calif.) was selected Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Tuesday night following his stellar eight-inning outing against Lehigh on Monday.

Eckert becomes the sixth Navy freshman this year to earn the league’s rookie-of-the-week recognition and marks the seventh time that the Midshipmen have won the rookie-of-the-week award this season, both of which are all-time Patriot League records for any of its weekly honors.

Eckert joins fellow Navy freshmen Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.), Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.), Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.), Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) and Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) as recipients of the Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week award in 2007.

The Navy southpaw won his third game in as many Patriot League starts this year with one of his best performances during his young career against the Mountain Hawks on Monday in Annapolis. Eckert scattered six hits and two earned runs over eight strong innings, as he walked only one and struck out a season-best six batters. He held Lehigh scoreless over his final-five innings on the hill and yielded only two hits during that span. He used 104 pitches to record his longest outing of the year, 68 of which went for strikes.

In Patriot League action this year, Eckert owns a 3-0 record with a 3.26 ERA in 19.1 innings. He has walked only four and struck out 13 batters, while holding the opposition to a .260 batting average.

The product of La Selva Beach, Calif., carries a 4-1 overall record with a 3.13 ERA in eight appearances, five of which are starts, in 2007. The four victories are tied for the fourth-highest total by a Navy freshman in program history and just one shy of tying the freshman school record of five wins set by Toby Moore (1993), Drew Tanner (1983) and Lou Repucci (1973).

The Midshipmen (28-12) will return to action this evening, as they travel to Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md., to take on Georgetown (13-23) in a non-league contest at 7 p.m.

Davidson Snaps Navy's Seven-Game Win Streak

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Davidson surged to a 10-3 halftime lead and cruised in the second half to defeat the Navy women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The loss snaps Navy's seven-game winning streak, dropping the Mids to 12-4. Davidson improves to 3-9 on the year.

"I thought we got off to a good start, but couldn't sustain it. It was a disappointing day for us," said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal. "I was disappointed in our defense. They were able to do basically whatever they wanted."

The Mids jumped out to a 2-1 lead 13 minutes into the contest, but Davidson responded with a 7-0 run over 12 minutes and ended the half on a 9-1 run for the 10-3 halftime advantage.

Navy would get no closer than seven goals at 12-5 in the second half, in dropping its second home game of the year.

The Wildcats dominated the statistics, outshooting the Mids, 33-18, including 22-7 in the second half. Davidson was also 9-of-10 on free-position shots and forced Navy into 23 turnovers, including 16 in the second half.

"They were very successful in close, and that is discouraging," added Timchal. "We have to get tougher around the goal and reduce opponent's good scoring chances. We gave up way too many today."

Amanda Towey tallied four points (1 g, 3 a), while Mary Ruttum added three points (2 g, 1 a). Elise Chapdelaine scored two goals and Erin Rawlick netted one. Natalie Blandon recorded eight saves in 35 minutes, before Vanessa Nieves stopped three shots in eight minutes.

The Mids are scheduled to compete in this weekend's Mid-Atlantic Women's Lacrosse League tournament at a site to be determined.

Navy’s Six-Game Winning Streak Halted at Georgetown

BETHESDA, Md. – The Navy baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped in a 6-3 setback against Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md., on Wednesday night. The Midshipmen dropped to 28-13 with the loss, while the Hoyas improved to 14-23 on the year.

“We didn’t do much offensively tonight,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “With four hits, there was not enough life on the offense to get the runs we needed. I really thought Mike (Hoosier) had a good game, getting two hits and striking the ball well tonight.”

After both teams were held hitless and scoreless over the first three-and-a-half innings, Georgetown took a 1-0 lead when Brandon Cook hit a groundball that hit the dirt and skipped over second baseman Michael Garcia’s (Kailua, Hawai’i) glove to plate a runner on third with two outs. The Hoyas made it 2-0 in the fifth with a two-out double down the left field line, just past the diving attempt from left fielder Mike Hoosier (Pomona, N.Y.).

Georgetown pushed the lead to 4-0 in the sixth with a two-run home run before Navy made a seventh-inning rally. The Midshipmen were hit by a pitch and drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with nobody out before Hoosier took the first pitch he saw and belted a two-run double to the gap in right center to plate junior Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Joshua Martinez (Denver, Colo.). Junior Bill Maugeri (Edgewater, Md.) cut the deficit to one at 4-3 with a one-out groundout to first that scored freshman Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.).

That proved to be as close as the Midshipmen would get, as the Hoyas answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

The Midshipmen would make things interesting in the ninth, as Hoosier and freshman Kendall Bolt (Stockton, Calif.) produced back-to-back singles with two outs to send the tying batter to the plate. However, Georgetown closer Daniel Kennedy induced a popout in foul territory to end the ballgame.

In his first collegiate start, Navy freshman right-hander Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) was the tough-luck loser as he allowed only one run on one hit in four innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Navy’s bullpen, which used four arms on Wednesday evening, was victimized for five runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

“Jonathan gave us a very good performance tonight,” said Kostacopoulos. “He delivered four pretty clean innings. He had a little pop on his pitches and displayed good command.”

Hoosier was the lone Navy hitter to post a multi-hit effort on Wednesday, as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Garcia finished the evening 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his streak to 16 games in which he has reached base safely.

The Midshipmen will return home to host George Mason tomorrow afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.navysports.com (.)

Navy Travels to Pennsylvania for 2007 Patriot League Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Anchored by returning All-Patriot League players Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) and Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.), the Navy golf team will look to capture its fifth Patriot League Championship when the Mids travel to Lewisburg, Pa. this Saturday and Sunday to compete in this year's conference championship. Action kicks off at 8:00 am on Saturday with 36 holes of play, followed by the final round on Sunday starting at 8:00 am. The winner of the two-day, 54-hole tournament will receive an automatic bid into one of the three NCAA regional tournaments.

The Bucknell University Golf Course, which has previously hosted the 1994, 2000 and 2005 Patriot League Golf Championships, will serve as the host course after last weekend's rainfall made the conditions at the West Point Golf Course unplayable.

Bucknell claimed last year's Patriot League Championship title played at the USNA Golf Club, clipping Army by two strokes. Six All-Patriot League golfers are back from 2005-06, including Bison senior Charlie Waddell who became the first player in league history to win the individual title twice and has a shot at winning the title for an unprecedented three-straight years. Waddell was the only golfer to finish under par a year ago and owned a commanding 10-stroke advantage over Army graduate Austin Luher. Also returning are Army's Joey Cave (Jr., T-3rd) and Patrick Beverly (Jr., T-8th), Colgate's Ricky Hayes (Jr., T-5th), and Navy's Renninger (Jr., T-5th) and Wielgus (So., T-8th).

Though Navy turned in a third-place finish in last spring's league championship, the Mids have claimed the tournament title four times in the last eight years, including back-to-back-to-back titles in 1998, 2000 and 2001. In addition, five different Midshipmen have won the individual title, including two in the last four years.

Just three of the six players who represented Navy at last year's Patriot League Championship will compete in this year's tournament. Renninger paced the Mids with his 13-over par 226. With his 1-under par 70 in the final round, he shaved nine strokes off his opening-round mark and improved seven strokes from his second-round score to jump from 19th to a tie for fifth.

Wielgus, meanwhile, picked up Patriot League Rookie of the Year recognition after tying for eighth with a 16-over par 229, the highest placing rookie in the field. He carded a 1-over par 72 in the final round to narrowly top teammates Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Pa.) and David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) who tied for 12th in the tournament with a 20-over par 233. Stinson struggled in the final round, turning in an 8-over par 79, while Miller enjoyed his best round on the final day, posting a 5-over par in the final round. All told, Navy's trio of freshmen were the top-three rookie finishers in this year's league tournament.

Stinson, who boasts Navy's best stroke average at 75.9, will once again represent the Mids, however, Miller will sit out this year's tourney. Joining Renninger, Wielgus and Stinson will be team captain Jeremy Garner (Fayetteville, Ga.), and second-year standouts Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) and John Montemayor (Woodbridge, Va.), all three first-time competitors in the Patriot League Championship. Garner, who has been plagued throughout his career with injuries, has enjoyed a successful senior campaign. He heads into the weekend with a 77.0 stroke average, producing a trio of top-20 finishes, including two top-10 marks. Montemayor has also stepped things up in his sophomore campaign, producing a 77.1 stroke average, while Hardie has played in nine of the 10 events this year and has turned in a 77.6 stroke average.

"We have a really strong team this year and we're excited about your prospects this weekend," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "The six golfers we have competing this weekend are the players who are currently playing the best right now. We have prepared all season for this weekend and we are hopeful that our preparation will pay off with a good performance at the Patriot League Championship."

CSTV to Broadcast First Game of Army-Navy Series

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's series-opening baseball contest against archrival Army at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field in West Point on Saturday will be televised nationally by CSTV, with first pitch slated for 12:07 p.m. The seven-inning ballgame will be aired live, with seven additional re-broadcasts throughout the course of the week.

Jason Knapp will deliver the play-by-play with former major league player and manager Buck Martinez providing color commentary for the 180th all-time contest between the two squads.

This marks the second-consecutive year that CSTV has broadcasted the opening game of the Army-Navy series, as last year's ballgame was played in Oriole Park at Camden yards in Baltimore.

Saturday's highly anticipated match-up between Navy junior right-hander Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) and Army senior southpaw Nick Hill will mark the first time in the series' 101-year history that two All-American pitchers will square off against one another in the same game.

The two hurlers lived up to the billing in last year's series opener. Harris, who had battled back from an ankle injury just 10 days before, came out and threw six innings of one-run baseball with six strikeouts. However, Navy's offense was held in check by Hill, as he threw a complete game shutout and limited the Mids to two hits.

This year, Harris ranks among the top-40 nationally in four pitching categories. The Navy right-hander’s seven victories rank him 24th and his 2.09 ERA places him 39th. In 64.2 innings on the mound this year, he has struck out 87 batters, the fourth-highest total in the country. His 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings also puts him eighth on the national list entering the week.

Navy will look for its 100th victory over Army on Saturday, as it owns a 99-80 advantage in the all-time series.

The Midshipmen make the trip up to West Point with a firm grasp of second place in the Patriot League standings with a 9-3 record, four games ahead of third-place Bucknell. Army enters with a 13-17-1 overall record and a 4-6 mark in league play, currently tied for fourth place with Holy Cross. The top-three teams in league standings at the end of the year will advance to the Patriot League Tournament with a shot to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A Pair of Trophies at Stake for Navy Rowing Teams this Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A pair of historic trophies will be on the line this weekend for the Navy men's crew programs as the heavyweights race against Cornell and Syracuse Friday and the lightweights compete against Harvard Saturday.

The heavyweight team will race for the Goes Trophy against the Big Red and the Orange on the Severn River in Annapolis. The trophy has been presented annually to the winner of the varsity race between the three teams since 1955. Syracuse currently is in possession of the hardware by virtue of its 11-second victory over Navy and 18-second triumph against Cornell last year.

The Orange are ranked ninth in this week's U.S. Rowing Men's Varsity Eight Collegiate Coaches Poll, with the Mids ranked 11th and the Big Red 15th.

"I think Syracuse again comes in as the favorite this weekend," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "They won last year and are coming off of a great win over Rutgers."

Friday's slate of racing begins at 6:30 a.m. with the 50th Goes Trophy race.

While the heavyweight team will be looking to regain possession of the Goes Trophy, the Navy lightweight team will attempt to maintain possession of the Haines Cup for the fifth time in six years when the Mids compete against Harvard. The trophy has been presented to the winner of the varsity race between the Mids and the Crimson annually since 1958, with this year's race taking place Saturday on the Charles River in Boston.

Navy won just three of the first 41 races for the cup, but has left the water with the trophy in four of the last five seasons, including last year when the Mids posted a five-second victory over the Crimson in Annapolis.

The lone time Navy has won the Haines Cup in Boston was in 2003.

The Navy women's team also will be in action this weekend when the Mids race against Georgetown Sunday on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Navy's varsity boat has posted a 12-2 record this season and recorded a seven-second victory over the Hoyas when the programs competed against each other last season.

"Georgetown has a good coach and very good kids," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "I expect a spirited race Sunday. If we are able to race the way we are capable of, I expect good results for us."

Freshman Pitching Leads Navy Past George Mason, 6-2

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Making his first-career start on the mound, Navy baseball freshman Alec Thomas (Kernersville, N.C.) tossed 5.1 innings of two-run baseball as the Midshipmen defeated George Mason, 6-2, on Thursday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis.

The Midshipmen improved to 29-13 on the year, while the Patriot fell to 18-19. Navy’s 29 wins in 2007 are tied for the fifth-most in school history, joining the 1982 squad that went 29-14-1 and went to the NCAA Northeast Regional.

Thomas scattered six hits and walked two while striking out three in an 80-pitch effort on Thursday for his first-career victory. Navy freshman Ridge Alkonis (Claremont, Calif.) came on for Thomas and delivered 3.1 innings of two-hit, shutout relief with two walks and four strikeouts. Freshman closer JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) came on with the tying run on deck and induced a game-ending popout to record his ninth save of the year, only one shy of tying the school record set by Ryan Hefner last season.

“For Alec to pitch the way he did after limited work this year is a great boost not only for the team, but for him as well,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “Facing a George Mason team that entered hitting .320 as a team with nearly 50 home runs, this is something he can really build off of. You can pretty much say the same thing for Ridge Alkonis. Having not pitched in a month, this could really be the lift for him.”

George Mason took an early 1-0 lead in the second before the Midshipmen grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the second and wouldn’t let it go. Junior Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) and freshman Mike Hoosier (Pomona, N.Y.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles before freshman Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.) laced a double down the left field line to score Hamilton and tie the game at one. Junior Bill Maugeri (Edgewater, Md.) gave the Mids a 2-1 advantage with a RBI-groundout to short that plated Hoosier.

Navy scored once in the third and twice in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-1. Hamilton drove in junior Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.), who led off the third inning with a bunt single down the third base line, on a RBI-groundout to make the score 3-1. Two innings later, freshman Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) singled in senior B.J. Bickel (Benson, N.C.) who led off the fifth with a single, before he would cross home on a Hamilton single to right.

The Patriots answered with a run in the sixth to pull within three, but the Midshipmen held the visitors off the board for the final three innings and plated an insurance run in the eighth. Senior team captain Michael Garcia (Kailua, Hawai’i) led off with a single and scored on a Hamilton single and a fielding error by the right fielder that allowed Garcia to advance from third.

Hamilton led the Navy offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Lydon joined Hamilton in the multi-hit department on Thursday, finishing the day with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and a RBI. Garcia went 1-for-3 to extend his on-base streak to 17-consecutive contests.

“We really executed our offense well today,” said Kostacopoulos. “We were able to execute three hit and runs and had a bunch of two out hits.”

Navy (29-13, 9-3 in the Patriot League) will head up to West Point to take on arch-rival Army (13-17-1, 4-6 in the Patriot League) for a four-game set this weekend at Doubleday Field. The two teams will square off in a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday before meeting again for a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. The first game of the series will be broadcast live through CSTV, as Jason Knapp and former major league player and manager Buck Martinez will call the action.

Transcript Of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's Comments following practice on Thursday, April 19

In Attendance: Bill Wagner (Annapolis Capital) and Corey Masisak (Washington Times)

Wagner: So what's your assessment of the media this spring?

Johnson: Wagner, I've already talked to you once today.

Wagner: What would be your assessment of the media this spring? Have they improved?

Johnson: We haven't seen the media all spring. I think it's pretty safe to say that the media isn't getting any T-Shirts for being at every practice.

Wagner: Corey, I will let you go ahead.

Masisak: Did you already talk to him today?

Johnson: Yeah, for 30 minutes.

Masisak: So who is going to play quarterback for you on Saturday?

Johnson: Jarod Bryant, Troy Goss, Greg Zingler, the same guys that have played all spring if you would have been out here. Zing.

Masisak: Troy Goss is in a red jersey today.

Johnson: He's OK. He will be able to play Saturday. If he doesn't it will be Jarod Bryant and Zingler I guess.

Masisak: What are your general impressions of the quarterbacks now that spring practice is finishing up?

Johnson: I think they've made some progress. I thought that Jarod Bryant and Troy Goss had really good springs. Zingler got to take a lot of reps so that has been good for him. Kaipo has been banged up a little bit. I think he's made progress in certain areas, but I'm sure it didn't go exactly the way he would have liked. I'm sure coming in he would have liked to have
separated himself from the rest of the guys and it didn't happen.

Masisak: What did you get out of last year's spring game after Hampton got hurt? Did you feel like not having him and giving the other guys all the reps helped you evaluate those guys?

Johnson: The spring game is not a big deal to me. It's a fun time for these guys to go play. It's fun for me, because I'm not involved. It's the one time I can just walk around and watch and second-guess all the coaches. I'm not going to base my spring evaluation totally off the spring game.

Wagner: Are you setting it up like you have in the past where the one offense will go against the one defense and the two offense will go against the two defense and on down the line?

Johnson: Yeah

Wagner: Will Goss get reps with the one offense?

Johnson: Probably not because he is playing with the No. 2 offense.

Wagner: You can't flop the quarterbacks?

Johnson: I can, but I don't know that I will. It could happen, but I don't plan on doing it.

Wagner: So technically Buddy (Green) is the head coach of one team and Niumat (Ken Niumatalolo) is the head coach of the other?

Johnson: Technically the Superintendent is the head coach of one team and the Academic Dean is the head coach of the other. Technically.

Masisak: Are there any other players that have stood out this spring?

Johnson: Yeah, there have been a lot of guys that have made a lot of progress. I really hesitate to single guys out. I don't think that's fair to anybody and when you start to single guys out you end up leaving somebody out that should be mentioned. We've had several guys get better.

Wagner: Will Mr. Strasemeier be putting out an updated depth chart that's reflective of the spring?

Johnson: He probably will, but it won't be accurate. I'm sure he will put one out.

Strasemeier: I won't put anything out until I get the OK from him, which will be next week.

Wagner: So that depth chart we got at the start of the spring probably isn't going to be correct.

Johnson: Probably not. I don't ever look at it. I know in my head what the depth chart is. I'm going to meet with every player on the team next week and when I get through talking to them some of them may quit. They may not like what I have to say.

Wagner: Or where they are on the depth chart.

Johnson: I think most guys know where they stand. They aren't stupid. They've been practicing for four weeks so they should know which group they've been practicing with.

Wagner: When does fall practice start in August?

Johnson: We start in July because of the early start date.

Wagner: Great, there goes my summer vacation. Do you know the date?

Johnson: You will just be coming off the sailing beat.

Wagner: I won't even be finished covering sailing.

Johnson: That has to be a tough job covering sailing.

Wagner: Do you have an exact date?

Johnson: Not for sure. Around July 30.

Wagner: Earlier than ever though.

Johnson: Yeah.

Wagner: Do you think next August you will have your Saturday scrimmages on Wednesday to get prepared for the regular season?

Johnson: Probably.

Wagner: It would be a good idea.

Masisak: Anybody else not going to play Saturday besides Kaipo?

Johnson: Yeah, a lot of guys aren't going to play.

Strasemeier: I will put out a list.

Johnson: Actually this spring has been pretty good. Somebody told me today that Purdue has 24 guys that are going to miss the spring game. That happens. For the most part we've been pretty fortunate. We have a few guys banged up. We have a lot of guys that didn't miss a practice.

Strasemeier: I only missed one practice.

Johnson: Strasemeier didn't come close to making it every day.

Strasemeier: I missed one.

Johnson: You missed more than one. Don't get me started Strasemeier. If it was cold and the wind was blowing we didn't see any media or Strasemeier. Stacie (Michaud) made every day, Strasemeier didn't.

Scouting Army

Army heads into this weekend’s action with a 13-17-1 overall mark and a 4-6 record in Patriot League play, tied for fourth in the league standings. The Black Knights swept their doubleheader against Holy Cross last Saturday, but heavy rain forced the postponement of the second doubleheader, which may be made up later in the year if the games have an effect on the league tournament.

The Black Knights key for success in 2007 has been its pitching, as the team has posted a 3.84 ERA in 265.0 innings this year. Headlining the cast of pitchers for Army is All-American southpaw Nick Hill, who owns a 4-3 record with a 1.43 ERA in 57.0 innings with 68 strikeouts. Senior closer Milan Dinga, an All-American last season, has yielded only four hits and no runs in 10.1 innings this season with no walks and 13 strikeouts.

While the pitching has kept Army in most ballgames this year, its offense has produced less than five runs per game and a .258 team batting average. Cole White enters the weekend leading the Patriot League with a .410 batting average and has swiped 10 bases in 14 attempts. Dinga, also a right fielder, leads the Black Knights with three round trippers and 23 RBIs during his senior campaign.

Last Year Against the Black Knights

Navy came away with one victory during the four-game set against Army last season. Behind an outstanding 8.2-inning performance from Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.), the Midshipmen blanked the Black Knights, 2-0, in the Sunday doubleheader finale in Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore. During the series opener, Navy’s Mitch Harris and Army’s Nick Hill met in a classic pitcher’s duel. Hill and Army came away on top, blanking the Mids with a two-hit effort. The Black Knights completed the set with a doubleheader sweep on Monday afternoon in Annapolis. Navy’s pitching staff recorded a 3.09 ERA on the weekend, but the offense was held to four runs in the four games and a .178 team batting average.

How Do They Determine the N-Star?

If Navy were to win the four-game series against Army this weekend in West Point, then the Midshipmen would claim the coveted N-Star. If the two teams were to split the four-game set, the Star would be awarded to the team that won the series opener.

The All-Time Army-Navy Series

Navy owns a 99-80 (.553) all-time advantage in the storied 101-year series history against Army that began in 1901. The Midshipmen are 38-42 in West Point, with their last N-Star coming in 2003 on the banks of the Hudson.

All-American vs. All-American

This Saturday’s series-opening matchup between Navy junior right-hander Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) and Army senior southpaw Nick Hill will mark the first time two All-American pitchers will square off against one another in the same game during the 101-year Army-Navy history. Although the two pitchers met on the hill in Oriole Park at Camden Yards last year, Harris was not named an All-American until the postseason.

CSTV to Broadcast First Game on Saturday

Navy's series-opening baseball contest against archrival Army at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field in West Point on Saturday will be televised nationally by CSTV, with first pitch slated for 12:07 p.m. The seven-inning ballgame will be aired live, with seven additional re-broadcasts throughout the course of the week. The re-broadcasts will be on April 21 at 10:30 p.m., April 24 at 4 p.m., April 25 at 1 a.m., April 25 at 12 noon, April 26 at 6:30 a.m., April 26 at 9 a.m. and April 27 at 2:30 p.m.

Back-to-Back 30-Win Seasons

With a win, this year’s Midshipmen baseball squad would be the first team in school history to win 30 games in back-to-back years and the fifth team to reach 30 wins in program history. Entering the weekend, the Mids are only five victories behind the all-time record of 34 wins set by the 1995 ballclub.

Navy’s History of Success in the Patriot League

Despite joining the Patriot League two years after it began competing in baseball, Navy has won more league postseason and regular season titles than any other team in league history. The Midshipmen, who joined the league in 1993, have won five Patriot League titles and been crowned regular season champions on eight occasions. Navy’s all-time winning percentage of .602 (177-117) in Patriot League action ranks second among teams currently affiliated with the league.

Navy Could Qualify This Weekend

If Navy were to win three games over Army and Bucknell were to split its four-game set at Holy Cross, then the Midshipmen will be guaranteed a spot for postseason action. If Navy were to sweep the Black Knights and Bucknell were to win 1-3 games at Holy Cross, then the Mids would qualify for the Patriot League Tournament.

12 Wins Have Proved as the Magic Number

Since the Patriot League went to six teams in 1996, no team with 12 or more Patriot League victories has ever failed to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament. Twice over the last-four years, a team with a losing league record (9-11) has had its opportunity to compete in the league tournament.

The Midshipmen own a 9-3 record in the Patriot League heading into this weekend, standing a full four games ahead of third-place Bucknell in the league standings.

Two Patriot League Sweeps

With Navy’s series sweep of Lehigh this past weekend, the 2007 Mids became just the second team in program history to record two Patriot League, four-game series sweeps in one season. The only other Midshipmen baseball squad to do so came in 1995, as they went on to win the league and advanced to the NCAA regional.

Road Sweet Road?

Heading into their final Patriot League road series of the regular season this season at Army, the Midshipmen have enjoyed a perfect 6-0 mark away from Annapolis this year. Overall, Navy owns a 12-4 away from Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in 2007.

Navy in the National Rankings

As a team, the Midshipmen rank among the top-75 programs in the nation in four categories entering play this week. Navy’s 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings ranks 24th nationally, its .700 winning percentage places the squad 32nd in the country and its 3.98 team ERA is 52nd among all Division I programs. The Midshipmen have turned 0.9 double plays per game this season, the 74th-best mark in the nation.

How Bizarre?

The Midshipmen went through one of the strangest stretches in recent memory between April 7-16, as games were postponed, cancelled, delayed and/or moved for rather uncommon reasons.

Navy’s scheduled doubleheader with Lafayette on Saturday, April 7, was postponed due to snowfall that fell during the overnight hours. Over the past 30 years, Annapolis has averaged a trace of snow in the month of April.

On Tuesday, April 10, Navy’s night game at UMBC was cancelled, as the lights failed to turn on. One day later at Joe Cannon Stadium, Navy waited an hour and half past the 6 p.m. start time against Coppin State for emergency umpires to arrive from games called an hour-plus away from the stadium earlier in the day.

This past weekend, the final day’s doubleheader between Navy and Lehigh was moved to Annapolis after a powerful Nor’easter rendered Lehigh’s home field unplayable. With the storm still swirling just off the coast, the two teams played a twinbill with winds gusting over 50 mph for much of the afternoon, causing several delays as particles kept flying onto the field.

Busting Out the Road Brooms

Navy recorded a four-game sweep of Patriot League foe Holy Cross up in Worcester, Mass., to open the league slate this year. The four-game sweep of a league opponent on the road is Navy’s first since it took four from the Crusaders in the Bay State on April 28-29, 1995.

Starting Hot in the Patriot League

Navy owns an all-time record of 42-12 (.778) following its Patriot League season-opening weekend, including an 12-3 (.800) mark in its first league game of the year. The Midshipmen have started the league slate with a 4-0 record in back-to-back years for the second time in school history (other time being the 1994 and ‘95 seasons).

Going 4-0 to Start in the Patriot League

Navy’s four victories to open its action in the Patriot League were one shy of tying the school record of five wins set during the 1994, ‘95 and ‘06 campaigns.

Navy Tabbed Second in Patriot League Preseason Poll

The Navy baseball team has been picked to tie for second place in the 2007 Patriot League Preseason Poll, voted on by each school’s head coach and sports information contact. Five of the six teams in the Patriot League received a first-place vote in the poll.

For the third-consecutive year, Army (30-20-1, 10-10 PL/fourth) has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league with seven first-place ballots and 46 points. Lafayette (27-24, 11-9 PL/third) and Navy (32-21-1, 8-12 PL/fifth) each accumulated 34 points to tie for second, as the Leopards received two first-place votes and the Midshipmen collected one. Bucknell (24-24, 13-7 PL/tied-first) tallied 30 points and a first-place vote, while defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (28-28, 13-7 PL/tied-first) came in fifth with 24 points and one first-place ballot and Holy Cross (16-26-1, 5-15 PL/sixth) rounds out the league with 12 points.

Second-Youngest Team in Patriot League

The 2007 Navy baseball team ranks as the second-youngest team in the Patriot League this season, highlighted by its 16 freshmen and only five seniors. Only Lehigh, last year’s league champion, welcomes more new faces this year, as nearly half (17-of-35) of its team is comprised of freshmen.

Freshmen Making Immediate Impact

Navy has relied heavily upon its freshman class during its successful start to the 2007 season. The Midshipmen have started no fewer than two freshmen in all-36 games this season. On six occasions, the Mids have slotted six freshmen in the starting lineup, going 5-1 in those contests.

Seven Patriot League Rookie of the Week Awards

Navy claimed Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week honors for the seventh time this year on April 17, establishing a Patriot League record for the most league awards won by one team in any of the three weekly honors (player of the week, pitcher of the week, rookie of the week).

Steven Soares (Parkland, Fla.) is the first Navy player to earn rookie-of-the-week honors twice, while Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.), Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.), Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas), Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) and Yale Eckert (La Selva Beach, Calif.) have each won the award once.

Patriot League Rookie of the Week: Five-for-Five

Navy won the Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award for five-consecutive weeks to open the year. The 2007 Midshipmen became the first team in Patriot League history to win one award for five-straight weeks, topping Navy’s four-consecutive pitcher-of-the-week accolades during the 1999 season.

20 Non-League Wins

Navy’s 20 non-league wins this season ranks as the second-highest total in school history, only five behind last year’s 24-win output during out-of-league games. Navy’s 18 wins prior to the start of Patriot League play also ranks second in program history, only one win shy of the record set by the 2006 squad.

Navy Reaches 1,600 All-Time Wins

Navy registered its 1,600th victory during its 112-year program history with a 2-1 win over Monmouth on March 11 in Annapolis. The Midshipmen entered the 2007 campaign as the 48th-winningest team in the nation, having won 60-percent of their all-time contests.

Kosty Second-Quickest to 50 Wins with Navy

With Navy’s 16-3 win over Mount St. Mary’s on March 27, second-year Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos became the second-fastest Navy skipper to get to 50 wins during his tenure with the Mids. Kostacopoulos’ 50th-career win with Navy came in his 81st game at the helm for the Mids (50-30-1), only four games behind legendary head coach Joe Duff, who won his 50th game in his 77th contest on May 1, 1965 (50-25-2).

Kosty Gets Career Win No. 550

Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos picked up his 550th career victory with a 9-7 victory over Buffalo on March 15 in Annapolis. The 18-year veteran head coach reached the 550-win mark after spending his first-seven years at Providence in 1990-96, and nine seasons at Maine from 1997-05, before taking over the reigns of the Midshipmen baseball program in 2006.

Kosty Likes Them Close

Since taking over the reigns of the Navy baseball program last season, head coach Paul Kostacopoulos has been quite successful in one-run affairs, posting a record of 20-7 (.741). The Midshipmen are off to a 9-3 start in one-run games in 2007 after going 11-4 last season.

Mids Use the Long Ball

After hitting four home runs during its first-26 games of the season, Navy pounded eight home runs over a five-game stretch from March 27 to April 1. Six different Midshipmen had a hand in on the act during this run, highlighted by Mitch Harris’ (Mt. Holly, N.C.) home runs in back-to-back-to-back games at Holy Cross. Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas), Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.), Kendall Bolt (Stockton, Calif.), Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) and Jack Ferrick (Stafford, Va.) each went deep in Navy’s 16-3 win at Mount St. Mary’s on March 27.

Harris Homered in Back-to-Back-to-Back Games

Navy junior Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) became just the second player in school history to belt a home run in three-consecutive games when he performed the feat at Holy Cross on March 31-April 1. The only other player to hit a round-tripper in back-to-back-to-back games was Mark Zematis at East Carolina on March 4-5, 2000.

Harris is the first player in program history to hit a four-bagger in three-straight Patriot League games.

Harris Ranking in Several Strikeout Categories

Junior right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) ranks among Navy’s top-five pitchers in career strikeouts, career strikeouts per nine innings and career strikeouts before his senior year, as well as fifth in Patriot League career strikeouts. Harris ranks fifth on the career strikeouts list with 222, which is also the second-highest total in school history before his senior campaign. His 12.28 career strikeouts per nine innings ranks first all-time, more than two strikeouts per game better than the second-best mark.

Already this year, Harris has struck out 87 batters in only 64.2 innings, placing him second on the program’s and league’s single-season strikeouts per nine innings list with 12.11. His 87 strikeouts in 2007 ranks sixth in school history and tied for fifth in Patriot League history.

Hollins Moving Up Stolen Base List

Junior center fielder Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) ranks fourth on the career stolen bases list with 48 during his first two-plus seasons. Hollins is just the second player in school history to steal 10 or more bases in a year for three-consecutive seasons. Craig Candeto is the only other player to achieve this feat, swiping 10-plus bases during each of his four seasons from 2001-04.

Melton: Saving the Game

Navy freshman reliever JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) owns the Navy freshman saves record with nine saves this season, five more than the previous record held by Todd Bizba in 1985. Melton’s nine saves also places him second on the all-time single-season saves list, only behind Ryan Hefner’s 10 saves last year. The Navy freshman’s nine saves also places him for third on the career saves list and matches the seventh-highest single-season mark in Patriot League history.

Field Dedication Set for April 28 vs. Bucknell

Prior to the start of Navy’s April 28 doubleheader against Bucknell at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, the field will officially be dedicated to the Terwilliger Brothers for their generous contributions to the Navy baseball program.

Ron Terwilliger was a three-year starter at second base from 1961-63 and hit .383 during his junior year in Annapolis. After graduating with honors, he served in the Navy before getting his MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. In 1986, he became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Trammell Crow Residential, a national real estate company that is the largest developer of multi-family housing in the United States.

Bruce Terwilliger was a star pitcher on the mound for the Midshipmen during his three years with the varsity baseball team from 1962-64. As a sophomore in 1962, he went 8-0 with a miniscule 2.29 ERA in 59.0 innings. He currently is only one of five pitchers in school history to post an undefeated record with five-plus decisions in a year. After he was commissioned into the Navy in 1964, he served and achieved the rank of Commander (O-5) prior to his retirement after 20 years of service.

With the generous support of the Terwilliger brothers, Navy’s home field went under massive renovations in the fall of 2005, highlighted by the installation of FieldTurf, 1,000 chair-back seats and a state-of-the-art hitting facility with several other amenities. As a result, Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium has become of the premier facilities in the East to play and watch a baseball game.
