The weather and the fun factor at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium yesterday were probably better than the football that was played there. But that was OK with the coaches at yesterday's annual Blue-Gold scrimmage that marked the conclusion of the spring practice period.

Navy head coach Paul Johnson was happy to be playing in front of a few thousand fans who could enjoy the best weather of the spring. Johnson paid little attention to the Blue posting a 10-7 victory over the Gold, but he was pleased that his players could run around and have some fun....

Women's Crew Sweeps Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Navy women's crew team enjoyed one of its better all-around racing days of the season Sunday morning on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., as the Mids posted a sweep of their three races against Georgetown by a combined margin of nearly 90 seconds.

"Anytime you can win all of your races it is a great Navy day," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "Our goal coming into today was top take an early lead and just keep going strong no matter what the difference between the boats was."

Navy's first varsity boat recorded a time of 6:02.2 to win the varsity race by 13 seconds over Navy's second varsity crew and by 23 seconds over the lone Georgetown entry.

"Our varsity crew felt this may have been their best race of the season, and our junior varsity boat put together an outstanding row, as well," said Hughes.

Navy boats also placed first and second in both the novice eight and varsity four races. The victory in the novice race allowed Navy's top boat in the flight to remain undefeated this season.

The Mids will now attempt to win their second Patriot League title in three years April 29 at the league championship regatta in Worcester, Mass.

Navy Finishes Second at Patriot League Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite turning in the low round of the day, a 14-over par 294, Navy (886, +46) was unable to catch Bucknell (883, +43) in the final round of action, finishing as the runner-up at the 2007 Patriot League Golf Championship held Saturday and Sunday at the Bucknell University Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa.

Bucknell, who was led by senior Charlie Waddell's final-round 68 (-2), defended its Patriot League title by edging the Midshipmen by just three strokes. Meanwhile, Army headed into the final round as the tournament leader, but dropped to third after posting its worst showing of the weekend with a 22-over par 302 to finish two strokes behind Navy. Lehigh (890, +50) finished fourth, two strokes behind Army, after carding its lowest round of the tourney (295, +15). Colgate pitched a 68-over par 908 to round out the top five, followed by Lafayette and Holy Cross who tied for sixth with a 73-over par 913.

"We caught Army, but we weren't able to catch Bucknell today," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "We had good scores today, but we were just a couple of putts short. I was really proud of the effort of the Midshipmen as they showed great leadership and poise. I'm very proud of their performance. We hope to learn from the experience and build on it for next year."

Holy Cross' Matt Czarnecki and Navy junior Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) were deadlocked heading into the final round of action, as both carded a 1-over par 41. Czarnecki held off Renninger by posting a 1-over par 71 on Sunday to claim individual medalist honors. Renninger, meanwhile, was just a stroke behind, finishing the tournament in second place with a 3-over par 213 and garnered All-Patriot League recognition for the second-straight year.

In addition to Renninger, sophomore Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) earned all-league kudos after tying for sixth with a 12-over par 222. The Broadneck High School product moved up from ninth to sixth after turning in a 4-over par 74 in the final round.

Sophomore John Montemayor (Woodbridge, Va.) finished just one stroke out of the top 10, as he tied for 12th with a 16-over par 226. Montemayor was tied for 15th heading into the final day, but his 6-over par 76 in the final round kept him from earning all-league recognition.

Second-year standout Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) turned in Navy's second-lowest round of the day with a 3-over par 73. He moved up from his 28th-place spot on day one to finish the tournament in a tie for 19th with an 18-over par 228.

Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.), the 2006 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, finished the tournament in 26th after turning in a 20-over par 230, while senior captain Jeremy Garner (Fayetteville, Ga.) played his final round at Navy where he posted a 5-over par 75 to finish in 30th (232, +22).

Navy Swept in Sunday Doubleheader at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Navy baseball team was held to three runs over two games on Sunday afternoon as the Midshipmen dropped both contests against Army at Doubleday Field. Navy fell in nine innings during the opener, 1-0, before coming up short in a 11-3 decision in game two.

Navy’s record went to 30-16 overall and 10-6 in the Patriot League with the setbacks. Army improved to 16-18-1 on the year and 7-7 in league action.

“It was tough to get much of anything going offensively all weekend,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “To strike out as much as we did, we really needed to get three hits to score a run. I have to tip my hat to their entire pitching staff this weekend.”

In the opener, Navy freshman starter Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.) and Army starter Cole White delivered one of the best pitching duels in Army-Navy series history. Drake went the distance for the Mids, scattering eight hits and one run with two walks in two strikeouts, but was tagged for the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year. White was equally impressive, yielding five hits and no runs without a walk and 12 strikeouts. For the first time in the 101-year history, the two teams battled in a 1-0 contest.

“Oliver showed me a lot of guts on the mound today,” said Kostacopoulos. “He pitched very well in a big ballgame. I can’t say enough about his performance this afternoon. Basically, Army won on a bouncer to first where the runner on third had a great jump.”

With the score knotted at zero going into the bottom half of the ninth, Army’s Kyle Stramara led off with a single to center. J.P. Polchinski laid down a bunt single down the first base line to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up 90 feet, Andy Ernesto hit a slow chopper to first with the infield drawn in. Navy first baseman Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) grabbed the ball and fired to home, but Stramara was able to beat the tag with a head-first dive for the win.

Drake worked his way out of several jams with clutch efforts to keep the Black Knights off the board. With runners on first and third with one out in the fourth, Army attempted a squeeze bunt that was popped in the air and caught by Drake, who threw over to third to end the inning. Two innings later in the sixth, Army’s Chris Simmons tripled down the right field line with one down. However, Drake induced a short flyout to center that could not plate the catcher and induced another flyout to get out of the jam. In the seventh, the Black Knights led off with a walk and moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. The Navy freshman delivered once again, getting a flyout to force extra innings.

During the nightcap, Navy plated a run in the second and fourth innings to establish a 2-0 lead. Freshman Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) and freshman Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) produced back-to-back singles to lead off the second before junior Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) singled through the left side to plate Lydon.

Two innings later, Harris blasted a solo shot over the left field fence to extend the Midshipmen advantage to 2-0. The round tripper was his eighth of the year, moving him into sole possession of third place on Navy’s all-time single-season list.

However, the Black Knights came back with 10 unanswered runs between the fourth and sixth innings to pull away.

The Midshipmen offense produced 14 hits in game two, but stranded 11 runners on base. Lydon led the way with four hits in five at bats, while junior Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.), Hamilton, Harris and freshman Mike Hoosier (Pomona, N.Y.) each had multi-hit performances. Lydon became the first Navy player to record four hits in one game against Army since John Cocca went 4-for-4 in 2002.

“We’re excited about Drew because he’s only going to get better,” stated Kostacopoulos. “He has swung the bat very well over the last month or so. He had another solid weekend at the plate for us, getting six hits in the series.”

Navy freshman starter Yale Eckert (La Selva Beach, Calif.) saw his record drop to 4-2 on the year, as he gave up eight hits and six runs, four of which were earned, with a walk and two strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

The Midshipmen are next scheduled to head to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State in a non-league contest on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before wrapping up the Patriot League regular season slate at home against Bucknell next weekend.

Navy may be named for its watery pursuits, but on the Charles River Saturday, the Midshipmen were nevertheless no match for the Harvard lightweights’ top boats, which wiped out memories of last year’s defeat at Navy’s hands—and losses in four of the last five years—with varsity and second varsity wins that brought the Haines Cup back to the Crimson.

The varsity eight had a turbulent first half of the course, with Navy getting a few seats up off the line and gradually increasing its lead. But the Crimson brought out the big guns in the second half, pulling out to a lead that spelled victory just 250 meters before the finish line....

Navy Wins League Tennis Title Over Army

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team earned its first Patriot League title in eight years by recording a 4-0 victory over Army in the championship match of the league tournament, Monday afternoon in Annapolis. The victory, Navy's ninth in a row, sends the Mids to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.

"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to represent Navy and the Patriot League in the NCAA Tournament once again," said Navy head coach John Officer. "I'm very happy for our players. Winning the league championship has been their goal all year and it is great to see them accomplish what they set out to do.

"We have all of the respect in the world for Army. They are well coached and have very good players."

As has been the case during each of Navy's nine most recent victories, the Mids won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Army won the first doubles match to be completed, but Navy recorded wins within a span of a few minutes of each other at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) and Johnny Waters (So., Papillion, Neb.) first posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Phil Muhawi and John Houghton, with Navy winning the point when its No. 3 duo of Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Fr., Danville, Calif.) defeated Bruno Lucivero and Charles Mullenger by a score of 8-6.

"The doubles matches were critical," said Officer.

When the two schools faced each other eight days ago in West Point, a 4-3 Navy victory, Houghton posted a straight-set victory over Nelms at No. 1 singles. It was a different result Monday as Nelms was the first player off the court following a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Houghton.

The Mids then recorded their third point of the day when team captain Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) won a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Michael Good at No. 3 singles. Winning the clinching point for the second time in as many days was Lemaich, who recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lucivero at No. 6 singles.

Navy led in two of the remaining three singles matches when play ended, with all three of the contests in their third set.

"We had some nervous parts of our matches today, but I think we managed it pretty well," said Officer. "We kept playing with an aggressive mindset."

Nelms, who lost a combined five games in winning his two singles matches during the tournament, received the Joe Abrahamson Award as the tournament's most valuable player.

"We've worked hard all season and put in a lot of time," said Nelms. "This weekend I really made up my mind to play as well as I could. I didn't want to let the team down."

"This feels really good," said Lai. "We had a tough stretch of the season when we were playing a brutal schedule, but we turned it around at the end of the year."

The NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced May 1, with the opening two rounds of the championship taking place May 11-12.

The Mids, the top-seeded team in the Patriot League will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 15-10 record while second-seeded Army sees its season come to an end with an 11-12 record.

Five VOST Teams Place in NASS Spring Regatta

The Navy offshore sailing team fielded five Midshipmen crews in the NASS Spring Regatta this Saturday on the Chesapeake Bay off Annapolis, with all five crews finishing in the top seven.

Navy crews took the top two spots in PHRF Class A0. James Lawsing led his 12-man crew aboard Polaris to a 38-second victory over Tomcat, another Navy boat, which was skippered by Chris Hamilton. This was the first competition of the season for both crews.

In PHRF Class A2, Mark McClure led his team aboard the Navy 44, Swift, to a respectable fifth place out of nine competitors. Ryan England, skippering Navy 44 Flirt, was sixth and Thomas Oberdorf was seventh. This was the first race that each of the Midshipman participated in as skipper.

VOST will enter two crews in the Annapolis NOOD Regatta this coming Friday through Sunday.

Women IC Sailing Team Qualifies for Nationals

The Women's team finished third overall.

At a challenging regatta at the US Coast Guard Academy, the coed team prepared for its upcoming district qualifiers. Martin Sterling and Christina Chance finished third out of 18 in the B Division. The team finished ninth out of 18.

At the MAISA open held at Georgetown, Navy finished second in both divisions, placing second overall as a team.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy water polo team closed out a successful spring season with a sweep of rival Air Force over the weekend in the Northeast Zone Spring Championship. The Mids defeated the Falcons by scores of 11-7 and 10-7, before Air Force knocked off Princeton, 16-10.

"It was great to end the spring on a high note with a couple of wins over rival Air Force. The Falcons are always a tough team to play against, and it was inspiring to see our team rise to the challenge," said Navy junior goalie George Naughton. "We still have some work to do, but the the investment we've made this spring has paid off so far. The younger guys gained some valuable experience and playing time on our trips, while the more experienced guys have really developed a nice chemistry playing together. The whole squad is coming along nicely, and we are right where we need to be heading into the summer."

In the first game, an 11-7 Navy win, the Mids jumped out to a 3-0 first-quarter lead. Air Force trimmed the lead to 5-3 at halftime and 6-4 after three quarters. However, Navy outscored the Falcons, 5-3, in the fourth quarter for the 11-7 decision. Returning All-American Aaron Recko led the way with four goals, while Bram Arnold chipped in with three. Mike Mulvey, Andrew Bingham, Nick Mansfield and Johnny Meiners had one each.

In game two, Navy pulled away in the middle two quarters for the 10-7 victory. The teams were tied at 3-3 after one quarter, but Navy surged ahead 6-4 at halftime. The Mids led 8-4 after three quarters before coasting for the three-goal win in the fourth quarter. Recko and freshman Kevin Bell scored three times, while Arnold, Mulvey, Bingham and Meiners had one goal each.

The Navy tennis team earned its first Patriot League title in eight years by recording a 4-0 victory over Army in the championship match of the league tournament yesterday afternoon in Annapolis. The victory, Navy's ninth in a row, sends the Mids to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.

As has been the case during each of Navy's nine most recent victories, the Mids won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Army won the first doubles match to be completed, but Navy recorded wins within a span of a few minutes of each other at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Nate Nelms and Johnny Waters first posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Phil Muhawi and John Houghton, with Navy winning the point when its No. 3 duo of Alex James and Ramsey Lemaich defeated Bruno Lucivero and Charles Mullenger by a score of 8-6....

Melton Named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List

LINCOLN, Neb. – For his impressive performance coming out of the bullpen this year, Navy baseball freshman closer JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) is one of 40 pitchers selected for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List, it was released by the association on Thursday night. The third annual award is presented to the top relief pitcher in Division I college baseball.

The finalists for the award will be announced on May 30, with the NCBWA’s All-America Committee selecting the winner, which will be announced on June 6. Don Czyz from Kansas won the award last year and Texas’ Brent Cox was presented with the inaugural award in 2005.

Melton has come in relief 16 times during his first season in Annapolis, owning a 2-1 record with a Patriot League-best nine saves and 2.81 ERA in 25.2 innings of work. The Navy right-hander has limited the opposition to a .227 batting average and has struck out 15 batters while walking only six.

The product of Myrtle Beach, S.C., already owns the Navy freshman record for saves (9), relief appearances (16) and games pitched (16). Melton needs only one more saves to tie the program’s all-time single-season saves mark held by Ryan Hefner, who saved 10 ballgames last season. Melton is only two saves away from tying the school’s career saves record and the Patriot League single-season saves record of 11 set by Bucknell’s Phil Futrick in 2003.

Between Feb. 23 and April 9, Melton held the opposition scoreless for 16.0-consecutive innings, spanning nine relief outings. He has not issued a walk in eight-straight appearances and has yielded two or fewer base hits over seven of his last-eight times on the hill. In addition, he has recorded a win or a save in seven of his last-nine relief appearances.

A versatile reliever, Melton has been called upon in numerous different types of roles this season. The Navy right-hander has thrown two or more innings to close out a ballgame seven times in 2007, but has also been summoned out of the bullpen for an inning or less to get a save on five occasions.

Melton was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American during his collegiate rookie campaign with Wofford College (S.C.) last year. In 2006, he had a hand in 70 percent of the team’s wins, as he won seven games and registered seven saves in 29 relief appearances, logging 49.1 innings on the hill.

The Midshipmen (30-16, 10-6 in the Patriot League) will travel to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State (18-17-2) in a non-league contest today at 3 p.m., before hosting Bucknell (14-22, 6-10 in the Patriot League) in a league four-game set this weekend at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis.

Navy Swimming Programs Garner National Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving programs have both earned a pair of national honors over the last week for their academic and athletic accomplishments. Both teams earned Academic All-America recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for their performances in the classroom during the 2006 fall semester, with each also placing among the top-five teams in the final respective Mid-Major Dual Meet Ranking produced by CollegeSwimming.com(.)

Academically, the Navy men's team combined to post a 2.99 grade-point average during the semester to be placed on the national list, while the women's squad compiled a 2.80 GPA as a team during the term to also earn the accolade.

Both Navy programs also earned this honor for each semester of the 2005-06 academic year.

Athletically, the Navy men's team ranked second in the final mid-major ranking, with the women's program placing fifth in their respective ranking.

The dual meet ranking uses an objective point system to compare teams' relative strength in a traditional thirteen-event dual meet lineup. Lineups are submitted by participating teams. Institutions eligible for the mid-major designation do not come from one of the eight major NCAA Division I-A football conferences or award fewer than seven women's or five men's scholarships.

Navy's men's program totaled 191.42 points to finish just 31-hundredths of a point behind top-ranked Princeton (191.73) in the final standings. The top-five teams were rounded out by Eastern Michigan in third place (189.22), Cornell in fourth (187.79) and Oakland in fifth (185.99).

The Mids posted a 165-135 victory over Princeton during the 2006-07 regular season, the first Navy win over the Tigers in 42 seasons. Princeton would go on to win the team title at the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League championship, with Navy placing sixth at the meet.

Additional teams Navy faced during the regular season who appeared in the final ranking were Cornell (fourth place), Army (eighth), UMBC (16th), Bucknell (17th) and Penn (19th). The Mids, who compiled a 12-4 overall record during the campaign, tallied a 4-1 record against the previously mentioned programs. Navy's lone loss to the group was to Cornell.

Navy won its fourth Patriot League title in as many years this season, with Army placing second at the meet and Bucknell third.

The Navy women's team, meanwhile, accrued 180.53 points to finish just 8.35 points in back of top-ranked Harvard (188.88) and 89-hundredths of a point behind third-place Florida Atlantic (181.42) in the mid-major ranking. Princeton totaled 187.56 points to place second in the standings, while Miami (Ohio) finished just ahead of the Mids with 181.13 points.

The Mids posted a 3-1 record during the regular season against teams who also appeared in the final ranking on their way to compiling an 11-2 overall record on the year. Navy recorded victories over Bucknell (11th place), UMBC (14th) and Colgate (24th) this year, while dropping a 10-point decision to Penn (ninth).

Navy won its league-best ninth Patriot League title this season, with the Bison placing second at the championship and the Raiders third.

Navy’s football team could open its season with all of its starting defenders getting their first career start, according to team defensive coordinator Buddy Green.

Green’s assessment came at the end of the Midshipmen’s annual Blue-Gold football game, which marked the end of the team’s spring practice season. With just two defensive starters returning from last year’s team that went 9-4 and helped Navy qualify for its fourth straight bowl game, many players used the game as a last chance to impress coaches before fall practice starts....

Errors Prove Costly in 4-3 Loss to Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State’s Ryne Scheiwe delivered a two-out, walk-off single in the 10th inning as the Midshipmen fell, 4-3, at Solider Field on Wednesday afternoon in Dover, Del. The loss drops Navy’s record to 30-17 on the year, while Delaware State improved to 19-18-1 on the campaign.

The Midshipmen committed four errors, three of which occurred on stolen base attempts at second base, which led to three of Delaware State’s four runs being unearned.

“Making four errors in one game really says enough,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “With four errors, you can’t expect good things to happen. You certainly can’t expect to win.”

In his second inning of relief, Navy freshman JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) retired the first two batters he faced in the 10th inning. Delaware State’s Jarrett Bibb singled to right field, with the ball bouncing out of right fielder Michael Speciale’s (Pearland, Texas) glove as he hit the ground on a diving attempt. With the count 2-1, Bibb took off for second and advanced to third as throw got past second base. With a full count, Scheiwe singled to left, just past a fully extended Mike Hoosier (Pomona, N.Y.), to score the winning run.

With Navy trailing 3-2 going into the eighth, the Midshipmen plated a run off Delaware State reliever JR McAllister, its weekend ace. Junior Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) got things going with a one-out walk. After working the count full, Hamilton took off and Speciale singled through the right side to move Hamilton to third. Sophomore Joshua Martinez (Denver, Colo.) followed with a bloop single to center to tie the contest at three.

Delaware State held a 2-0 lead after scoring once in both the second and third innings. The hosts took advantage of a two-out error to plate their first run of the game and scored their second run on a groundout after the runner advanced to third when the throw to second on a stolen base attempt caromed away from the second baseman.

The Midshipmen rallied to knot the game at two in the top of the fourth with two outs. Hoosier roped a two-run single into left center to bring home Martinez, who drew a one-out walk, and freshman Kendall Bolt (Stockton, Calif.), who doubled down the left field line. However, the Hornets took the lead back in the bottom of the inning with a run-producing fielder’s choice.

Navy freshman Alec Thomas (Kernersville, N.C.) made his second-career start on Wednesday, as he went four innings and scattered four hits and three runs, only one of which was earned, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Navy’s bullpen kept the Midshipmen within striking distance, keeping Delaware State off the board between the fifth and ninth innings. Junior Kevin Heasley (Cincinnati, Ohio) fired three innings of one-hit, shutout relief and senior James Lee (Asheville, N.C.) struck out the side in a scoreless eighth inning. Melton was tagged for the loss, despite the run being unearned in the 10th, to fall to 2-2 on the year.

“Overall, our pitchers threw very well,” said Kostacopoulos. “They threw well enough to win the game. The bullpen did its part and Alec (Thomas) had a good start. Kevin (Heasley) was as good as he has been all year and James (Lee) looked really good in his inning of work.”

The Midshipmen will return to action this weekend when they host Bucknell in a four-game Patriot League set at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis. Prior to the start of Saturday’s noon doubleheader, there will be a field dedication ceremony for the Terwilliger Brothers. In addition, the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Navy baseball hat, all Mids will enjoy a free hot dog and soda, kids will be able to run the bases after the doubleheader and an autograph session will take place after Saturday’s twinbill.
