ANNAPOLIS, Md. - John Griffin scored 15 points as Bucknell rallied on the road to beat Navy Friday night, 78-63. Greg Sprink led Navy with 18 points and became the 17th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, and just the fifth to do so in his junior year. Sprink, who needed 11 points to reach a grand, now has 1,007 career points.

Navy had a strong first half, jumping out to a 24-16 lead with 9:41 to play in the first half on a Sprink three-pointer, but the Bison closed the half on a 23-13 run taking the lead for good on a Patrick Behan three-pointer with 25 seconds left to give the Bison a 39-37 halftime lead.

Bucknell then broke the game open early in the second half, opening the stanza on a 18-6 burst over the first six minutes. The Bison would stretch the lead to as many as 20 with just under two minutes to play before Navy trimmed the final margin to 78-63.

"I thought we had good physical energy tonight, but I didn't like the pace," said Navy head coach Billy Lange. "We gave Bucknell too many possessions and didn't play great defense. They took advantage and capitalized offensively against us. You have to have offensive and defensive balance against them. Scoring 63 points on offense should be enough, so I am disappointed in that."

The Mids struggled on the glass against the physical Bison, getting outrebounded, 40-22. Navy was 21-of-53 (.396) from the field, including 13-of-32 (.406) from three-point range. Navy made all eight of its free throw attempts, and turned the ball over just 10 times. Navy also recorded assists on its first 19 baskets and finished with 19 total assists on its 21 made baskets.

"I thought we did a great job offensively taking care of the ball and moving the ball early," said Lange. "Getting 19 assists on 21 baskets is pretty amazing and it was nice to see our offense get untracked some."

Lange also got strong contributions from the bench. Clif Colbert, seeing his first extensive action of the season, scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in just 14 minutes, while Chris Harris scored 12 points with two assists, two rebounds and a steal in 24 minutes. Scott Brooks, also seeing extensive action for the first time, gave Lange 15 solid minutes with one assist and two rebounds.

All told, Navy's bench scored 33 of its 63 points.

"I thought Clif (Colbert) and Scott (Brooks) played great tonight," said Lange. "They gave us a good spark and that is encouraging. They have been practicing well and they took advantage of their chance tonight."

Bucknell, which improves to 14-8 overall and stayed within striking distance of league leader Holy Cross at 8-1 in league play, shot 25-of-50 (.500) from the field, including 11-of-22 (.500) from three-point range. Bucknell was 17-of-22 (.773) from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 14 times.

Navy drops under .500 for the first time this year at 11-12 and are now 1-7 in Patriot League play. Navy has lost five games in a row.

"I was encouraged by a lot of things tonight," said Lange. "I have a constant faith in our team. We are still fighting hard and are getting closer and closer to getting over the hump. We are improving every game and will continue to do so as we move on in the year."

Navy will travel to Lehigh on Wednesday, Feb. 7, for a 7:00 pm tip at Stabler Arena against the Mountain Hawks.

Navy Captures N-Star With 107-73 Win at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Navy women’s track & field senior team captain Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) won two events and place second in another to lead the Midshipmen to a 107-73, N-Star victory at Army in Gillis Field House on Saturday afternoon.

The Midshipmen won 12 of the 17 events in finishing the regular season with a 7-0 record, their second-consecutive undefeated indoor season. The Mids have won seven of the last-nine N-Star meets, while the 34-point margin of victory is Navy’s largest since a 113-68 win during the 1999-00 season. With the loss, the Black Knights dropped to 1-3 on the year.

“I am exceptionally proud of our team,” stated Navy head coach Carla Criste. “A good majority of our women posted career bests today. They competed with 100% effort and focus, which is perfect heading into the Patriot League Championship back here in West Point in two weeks. I’m looking forward to continue the success we had today.”

Andrews opened her afternoon by tying the school record in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 8.72 seconds. Her ECAC-qualifying mark matched the mark classmate Danielle Still (Lawnside, N.J.) set at the 2004 ECAC Championship. Andrews also etched her name into the record books in the long jump, winning the event with the school’s third-longest distance of 18’8-3/4” (5.71 meters). The Navy team captain also placed second in the pole vault with a clearance of 10’10” (3.30 meters). Over her career, she has combined to win nine events during indoor and outdoor N-Star meets, six of which have come since the start of her junior year.

Senior Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.) broke Navy’s school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.59 seconds. Her effort on Saturday was 0.08-second faster than her previous school-record mark she set at the 2004 ECAC Championship. The senior placed second in the 200-meter dash with a career-best 25.34-second clocking, the fourth-best time in program history.

Junior Jacquelyn Charnigo (Medina, Ohio) registered a pair of field event victories for the Midshipmen. Charnigo won the pole vault with an ECAC-height of 11’9-3/4” (3.60 meters) and topped the field with a clearance of 5’3” (1.60 meters) in the high jump.

Senior Erin Demchko (Pearl River, N.Y.), junior Stefanie Peskosky (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Vicki Moore (Burke, Va.) each won an event and helped win the 4x800-meter relay. Demchko paced the field in the mile run with a time of 5:09.30, followed by Peskosky’s first-place, career-best time of 2:17.45 in the 800-meter run and Moore’s ECAC-qualifying time of 2:56.44 in the 1,000-meter run. Moore, senior Caitlin Rummel (Falmouth, Mass.), Peskosky and Demchko teamed up for a 9:35.87 showing to win the final track event of the afternoon.

Sophomore Meg Joyce (West Kingston, R.I.) opened the meet by winning the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 45’6-1/4” (13.87 meters), three feet longer than the second-place throw from Army. Junior Jessica Orr (New Holland, Pa.) out-ran the field in the 400-meter dash with a career-best time of 58.95 seconds and senior Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) posted a first-place clocking of 10:06.23 in the 3,000-meter run.

Navy will return to West Point in two weeks to compete in the 2007 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championship in Gillis Field House on Feb. 16-18. The Midshipmen placed third in last year’s league championship held in Halsey Field House.

Mids Lose to First-Place Bison

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bucknell women's basketball team scored 25 points off of 26 Navy turnovers en route to a 76-66 victory over the Midshipmen, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.

"As much as Bucknell's takeaways hurt us, our giveaways hurt even more," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "They were due to sloppiness, laziness and not being ready to play. You can't win when you keep shooting yourself in the foot as we did."

Both teams converted an identical 15-of-30 shots from the field in the first half, but the Bison held a 43-35 advantage thanks to sinking an additional four three-point field goals and an identical number of free throws than the Mids did.

The Bison (7-1 Patriot League, 15-8 overall) opened up a 24-18 advantage midway through the first half, but Navy (3-5, 9-13) quickly scored the next seven points to take a 25-24 lead. The run started when Margaret Knap (Sr., Chicago, Ill.), who totaled 19 first-half points, drilled a three-pointer, then Lindi Conner (Jr., Kingman, Kan.) scored a field goal on back-to-back possessions for Navy.

Bucknell responded with a 13-2 run, which gave the Bison a 37-27 lead with 4:16 remaining before halftime.

As the second half began, Navy quickly climbed to within four points at 47-43 on another Knap trey with just under 17 minutes left on the clock. The Bison, however, gradually extended their advantage back to double figures at 58-47 with 9:30 left in the game, then led by as many as nine points over the remainder of the contest.

Navy's 26 turnovers tied a season high, a large number especially considering Bucknell totaled only eight steals in the game. Conversely, the Mids forced the Bison into 16 turnovers which directly led to 12 Navy points on the afternoon.

In addition, Bucknell converted 19-of-24 free throw attempts and tallied seven three-point field goals in the game, while Navy was just 11-of-13 from the foul line and converted only a trio of three-pointers, all of which were made by Knap.

Knap finished the game with a career-high 27 points, surpassing her previous career-best effort of 22 points. Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) and Conner both finished with double-doubles in the game, with Meyer totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds and Conner ending up with 10 points and 10 caroms. The duo helped Navy to a 40-30 advantage on the glass.

Four players scored in double figures for the Bison, with Lauren Schober's 16 pacing the squad.

Navy will now make a pair of trips to the Lehigh Valley over the next week, starting Tuesday night when the Mids visit Lehigh (7 p.m.) and concluding Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. game at Lafayette. Both games can be heard on WNAV-AM 1430 and www.wnav.com, while an audio and video broadcast of the games can be seen through www.navysports.com(.)

The Navy women's team also won both relay events on the afternoon.

"It was a very good meet for us," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "It was a great opportunity to get some of the kinks out before the league championship, as well as gain both experience and confidence in the pool the meet will be held in. I'm very proud of the way we performed."

Four Navy men's swimmers won a pair of individual events on the afternoon. Dan Warner (So., Ann Arbor, Mich.) won both individual medley races (1:59.16, 4:14.90), Brandon Wiedower (So., San Antonio, Texas) won the 200 free (1:44.85) and 500 free (4:42.86) events, Kyle Abner (So., Glenwood, N.J.) swept the two backstroke races (53.75, 1:58.30) and Mike Lowhorn (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) won both breaststroke competitions (59.92, 2:16.21).

Winning one event on the day for the Mids were Frank Komadina (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.), who won the 100 freestyle (47.76), and Josh Andres (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.), who captured the 1650 freestyle (16:44.62).

Additionally, the Mids won the 200 medley relay and placed second in the 200 freestyle relay.

"The team swam really well," said Navy men's assistant coach Adam Kennedy. "They began the meet strong and continued that effort throughout the meet."

Both Navy programs will return to Lewisburg and the Bucknell campus in two weeks for the Patriot League Championship (Feb. 15-17). The Navy men's team will be attempting to win its fourth-straight crown, while the Navy women are chasing their first title since 2002.

Navy Squash Extends Winning Streak to Four in a Row

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 10th-ranked Midshipmen squash team (16-6) swept Colgate (9-0), Lafayette (5-0) and Georgetown (9-0) at the Navy Invitational on Friday and Saturday that was held at the Halsey Squash Courts in Annapolis. Navy has now won four in a row dating back to its Jan. 28 victory over Connecticut College in New Haven, Conn.

Four Midshipmen played in all three matches, including freshman Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) who led off the weekend with a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 victory over Colgate's No. 6 player Reuben Nathanson on Friday night. Mantica got the nod to play the No. 1 spot in the "emerging teams" match against Lafayette where he posted a 9-0, 9-4, 9-2 win over Jeremy Turner. In the afternoon finale, he defeated Greg Gartin of Georgetown, 9-0, 9-1, 9-3, at No. 6. Mantica owns a 15-6 record in his rookie campaign and has won six of his last 10 matches.

Second-year standout Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) also swept his three opponents and featured a pair of matches in which he did not give up a point. On Saturday, he turned in a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 victory over Akhil Daswani of Lafayette and hours later blanked Georgetown's Chris Verillo. Zipf is pacing Navy this winter with 17 wins and is 7-3 in his last 10 matches.

Junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.), who is ranked 75th in the country and has lost just two matches in his last 10 outings, picked up a pair of wins. Sawin defeated Andy Culp from Colgate, 9-0, 9-1, 9-0, in the No. 4 matchup, while sweeping Calin Gunn of Georgetown, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.

Sophomore Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) owns Navy's longest current winning streak with five-straight victories, including a win by default in the Mids' Lafayette match. On the year, he is 6-1.

The Mids, who have won 12 of their 16 matches by a 9-0 count, will conclude the Navy Invitational with a noon battle with 19th-ranked Rochester. The featured matchup will pit Navy's Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.), 12-4 this winter and ranked No. 38, against Rochester's top player, 12th-ranked Jim Bristow, a freshman from England.

Navy Wins Sixth-Straight N-Star, 95-86, at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Navy’s 4x400-meter relay team won the penultimate event of the afternoon to clinch its sixth-consecutive N-Star victory over Army with a 95-86 win on Saturday afternoon in Gillis Field House at West Point.

With the women’s track & field team’s 107-73 win earlier in the day, Navy’s track & field squads recorded their second indoor N-Star sweep at West Point. The men’s and women’s teams also recorded a sweep of the Black Knights during the 1999 season.

Navy’s six-straight N-Star victories marks the longest winning streak in program history and has won nine of the last-10 meetings. With Saturday’s win, the Midshipmen own a 24-22-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Black Knights.

“We really demonstrated some great team effort today,” stated Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. “We had to move some guys around, even some at the last minute, but they really gave us a big plus. Everybody stepped up when we needed them to this afternoon.”

The difference on Saturday afternoon came in the track events, as Navy outscored Army, 62-53. The Midshipmen won every track event between the 500-meter run and 3,000-meter run, with a pair of first- and second-place performances. The Mids and Black Knights each won three field events, tying with 33 points in those six events. Last season, Army held a 37-29 scoring advantage in the field events.

Holding 87-78 lead going into the relay events, the Midshipmen only needed to complete the two relays to ensure victory. Freshman Vince Carpentier (Branchburg, N.J.), junior Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.), junior William Ricks (Sussex, Va.) and junior Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) combined for a time of 3:20.54 to win the 4x400-meter relay and clinch a Navy win. With Army leading going into the final leg, Harris overcame the deficit to cross the finish line first by 0.19-second.

Setting up the scenario for the final-two events was Navy’s first- and second-place times in the 3,000-meter run. Junior John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the event with a career-best, IC4A-qualifying time of 8:25.61, followed by junior John Kress’ (Colorado Springs, Colo.) second-place clocking of 8:28.16, also a career-best and IC4A-qualifying showing.

Navy’s other 1-2 sweep on the track came in the 800-meter run. Meekins won the race with a time of 1:54.36, followed by junior Lucas Burke’s (Bakersfield, Calif.) time of 1:55.30 to finish second and edge Army’s Matt Tower by 0.41-second.

Junior Jeff Sarchione (Alliance, Ohio) and sophomore Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.) each recorded a career-best and IC4A-qualifying time in the mile run. Sarchione finished with a 4:10.49 showing to win the event by 0.13-second and Grant placed third with a clocking of 4:11.69.

Harris won the 500-meter run by more than two seconds with a 1:02.93 showing, marking the second time he has finished under 1:03.00 in the event this season. Junior Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas) ran a tough race with Army’s Chris Haag in the 1,000-meter run, just edging the Black Knights senior by 0.07-second with a time of 2:31.12.

The Midshipmen also benefited by a first- and second-place showing in the high jump to highlight their afternoon in the field events. Senior Cole Herron (Sanger, Calif.) cleared 6’8” (2.03 meters) to win the event for the first time this season. Senior Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) and Army’s Reagan Rafferty each passed over the 6’7” (2.01 meters) bar, but White required fewer jumps to win the tiebreak and finish second.

For the fourth time this season, junior Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) won the shot put with an IC4A-qualifying mark. Hunter uncorked a throw of 53’8-1/2” (16.37 meters) to win the event on Saturday. Classmate Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) recorded an IC4A mark in the triple jump in capturing first with a distance of 47’10-1/2” (14.59 meters).

Junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai’i) placed second in the long jump with a career-best, IC4A-qualifying mark of 23’7-1/2” (7.20 meters). The effort was less than six inches off the 10th-best distance in school history.

The Midshipmen (6-1) will conclude their indoor regular season when they travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic next Friday and Saturday.

Congrats on another All-Academy Championship in Wrestling

Mids Split Pair of Tennis Matches

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After opening the day with a 5-2 loss to Georgetown, the Navy tennis team rebounded to post a 4-2 victory over Villanova, Saturday at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.

The doubles portion of the Navy-Georgetown match saw the Mids record a victory at the No. 1 flight and Georgetown post a win at No. 3 doubles. In the decisive No. 2 doubles match, Georgetown's Will Lowell and Anthony Tan outlasted Navy's Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.) and Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) by a score of 9-7.

The Hoyas then won four of the six singles matches, including two decided by a tiebreaker (used in place of a complete third set). Navy's victories came when Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) defeated Tan 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 1 flight and when Kahl won a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 decision over David Tillem at No. 5 singles.

"It was disappointing to lose a match like we played against Georgetown," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We need our depth to come through better for us.

"Give Georgetown credit. They have a new coach in Gordie Ernst and they have already recorded some great wins since the start of the season."

Navy then won three of the four singles matches from the Wildcats in straight sets and split the two doubles matches to end the day with a victory.

Nelms won his third match of the day (he also teamed with Jason Hill for a win at No. 1 doubles against Georgetown) at No. 1 singles, a 6-2, 6-4 win over Dmitri Chimerakis, Hill (So., Atlanta, Ga.) bounced back from a tough loss at No. 2 singles against the Hoyas to post a 6-1, 7-5 win at the same flight over Villanova's Brian Maher, and Johnny Waters (So., Papillion, Neb.) posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sean Daly at No. 3 singles.

Navy's doubles victory saw Luke Albi (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Nate Malnati (Sr., Greeley, Colo.) rally to record a 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory over Sumanth Chittajallu and Alex Lesser at the No. 2 position.

"We really toughed it out against Villanova," said Officer. "Nate Malnati was a real sparkplug for us out there. When you go to the bench, you want to see some intensity and some hunger. Luke Albi really displayed those qualities today."

Navy's record stands at 3-2 on the season following the match against Villanova, while Georgetown is 4-3 on the year and Villanova is 1-2. The Mids will next play host to Maryland Saturday afternoon at 12 Noon at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.

"We are going to have a lot of close, tight matches -- like the Georgetown match -- against very good teams this year," said Officer. "We need to learn from today and get better. If we want to win a championship, we are going to have to win the majority of those types of matches."

Navy Wins Fourth-Straight All-Academy Wrestling Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 22nd-ranked Navy wrestling team captured its seventh All-Academy Wrestling Championship, including its fourth in a row, as the Mids topped the eight-team field with 124.5 points on Saturday at the Air Force Academy. The Mids placed all 10 of its wrestlers in the top three, including five individual title winners at 157, 174, 185, 197 and 285 pounds.

Navy has now won 45 individual crowns in All-Academy Championship history, including 19 of the 40 titles over the last four years. The Mids won the team title in 1995, '97, '99, '04, '05, '06 and '07, while they claimed five or more individual titles in 1997, '99, '04, '05 and '07.

Wrestling without the services of ninth-ranked Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) at 133 pounds and senior John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) at 149 pounds, the Mids finished the tournament with a 28-point advantage over second-place Army. VMI finished 24.5 points behind Army in third, followed by The Citadel in fourth and the host, Air Force, in fifth. Army and Navy will meet in the annual Star Meet in two weeks, as the Black Knights will play host to the Midshipmen on Feb. 18 in a match that will be televised by ESPNU beginning at 4:00 pm.

In addition to wrestling without two regulars in their lineup, the Mids struggled to make their way out to Colorado Springs. Scheduled to fly out of Baltimore on Thursday at 3:00 pm, Navy's flight was cancelled. Assured they would be able to get on a flight at 8:00 pm, the Mids were then bumped from that flight at 7:00 pm. The team was then bussed to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., expecting to make a flight, but instead was forced to spend the night. On Friday, Navy flew in to Denver where the bus that was supposed to meet the team was nowhere to be found. The Mids eventually arrived in Colorado Spring late afternoon on Friday.

"It was a tough weekend for our team," said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "We dealt pretty well with the had we were dealt in terms of traveling out to Air Force. We didn't look real sharp today, but we won our fourth All-Academy Championship and that's something to be proud of."

Nine of Navy's 10 wrestlers punched their ticket to compete for the individual title in their respective weight classes, including team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.), who earned the Mids' first individual title of the day. Jarred, a first-time All-Academy Championship title winner, won his first-round match by major decision (16-2) over Dandridge Giltz of the Merchant Marine Academy. Jarred got a free pass into the championship match when The Citadel's Travis Piccard had to pull out of the semifinal with an injury. Jarred went on to clinch the 157-pound title with a 6-1 victory over VMI's Tommy Cunningham.

Junior Justin Jacobs (LeRoy, Mich.) was one of four Navy wrestlers to record pins on the afternoon, as he posted a fall 1:19 over Trevor Muhler from the Merchant Marine Academy in is first match of the day. Jacobs followed up with a 9-3 decision over VMI's John Burton in the semis before dropping a 3-0 decision to top-seeded Brian Rowan from Army.

Navy went on to win the final four matches of the evening, including a win by junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) at 174 pounds. Stolpinski, who is ranked 10th in the country, edged Darius Caldwell from The Citadel, 3-2, claiming his third-consecutive All-Academy Wrestling Championship. He is only the fourth wrestler in Naval Academy history to win three individual titles at the All-Academy tournament, joining Greg Gingeleskie (1997-98-99), Mark Conley (2000-01-02) and Tanner Garrett (2004-05-06). Additionally, Stolpinski pushed his win total for the year to 32, becoming just the ninth wrestler in Navy history to etch his name into the 30-win club twice during his career.

Senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) scored a 5-3 decision over Army's Richard Starks to win the 184-pound title. Miranda received a bye in the opening round and advanced to the championship bout following a major decision over The Citadel's John Dickerson in the semis.

Junior Matt Parsons (Dunkirk, Md.) got the call for the Mids at 197 pounds where he stepped in and won his first-collegiate tournament title by pinning top-seeded Conner Sanders from Army at 4:24. Parsons received a first-round bye, before posting a 7-4 win over Eric Vincent from the Merchant Marine Academy in his semifinal match.

Ninth-ranked heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) extended his winning streak to 11 in a row after posting a 3-0 record and winning his first All-Academy Championship title. Prendergast pinned his first two opponents of the day, pushing his pin total for the year to 14. His 14 pins is tied as the fifth most by a Navy wrestler in a single season and the most since Frank Workman produced 14 pins during the 1996-97 campaign. Prendergast needed a little extra time in the championship bout, but eventually defeated VMI's Scott Buhman in overtime.

Navy opened the championship round with senior Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) who won the 125-pound weight class at last year's championship. Usztics came up short in defending his title, as Army's Fernando Martinez picked up a 10-6 decision over Usztics.

Newcomer Matt Pagan (Carteret, N.J.) replaced Baker in the lineup, pushing up a weight class from 125 to 133 pounds. After winning his opening bout by major decision over Air Force's Stephen Makuka, 18-10, Pagan was sent to the consolation bracket after dropping a 4-2 decision to VMI's Tyler Anthony. After earning a technical fall (18-2) over Dan Ippolito from Coast Guard, Pagan won the third-place match with a 7-5 victory over Matt Leach from The Citadel.

Senior Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) was stopped short of winning his first All-Academy title at 141 pounds, as top-seeded Matt Kyler of Army held off Canterbury, 8-6 in the championship bout. Canterbury recorded back-to-back pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals en route to making his finals appearance.

Navy made its third finals appearance in the first four matches when sophomore 149-pounder Joel Ahern (Herkimer, N.Y.) battled VMI's Sam Alvarenga. Ahern earned a pair of closed decisions in his opening two matches, but couldn't squeeze out a third, as Alvarenga dropped Ahern, 7-2.

The Mids will be back in action next Saturday night when they play host to EIWA foe Bucknell beginning at 7:00 pm in Halsey Field House. Navy will pay tribute to its senior class in a pre-meet ceremony. Upon the conclusion of the match, the Mids will host an autograph session.

Navy Caps Off Weekend with 7-2 Win Over Rochester

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 10th-ranked Midshipmen squash team defeated No. 19 Rochester, 7-2, Sunday afternoon at Halsey Field House in Annapolis. Navy finished its home invitational with a 4-0 record and took a step closer to reaching the 20-win milestone as the Mids own a 17-6 record.

"We finished off a great weekend of squash with a win over a very good and much-improved Rochester team," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson.

Sophomore Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) earned a solid win against Rochester junior Pat Harris at the No. 3 position. Smith, who is ranked 97th in the country, won the opening two games, 9-3, 9-4, before 113rd-ranked Harris stole the third game, 9-7. Smith earned the point for the Mids by winning the fourth game, 9-3.

Senior Dan Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) swept second-year player Ori Goldman at the No. 8 spot, 9-4, 10-8, 9-5, while junior Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) posted a 9-2, 9-2, 9-4 victory over Rochester senior Elie Biel at No. 9.

Sophomore Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) lost a heartbreaker in five games against Rochester rookie Alex Lee. Lee won the first two games, 9-2, 9-3, before Beautyman Jr fought back to take games three and four, 9-5 and 9-4, respectively. Lee, however, claimed the No. 5 match with a 9-2 decision in the fifth game.

Rochester freshman Jim Bristow, ranked 12th in the nation, proved to be too much for No. 38 Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) of Navy, as Bristow took the match in three games.

Finally, Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) capped off his undefeated weekend with a 9-4, 9-5, 9-3 triumph over Jamal Callendar in the No. 4 match.

The Mid will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face 13th-ranked Cornell at 9:00 am, followed by a 2:00 pm matchup against No. 16 Tufts.

Navy's women's basketball team spent all week preparing for the vaunted Bucknell press. Coach Tom Marryott used film study to show the various presses the Bison apply then showed the Midshipmen how to break them.

Navy spent plenty of practice time working on breaking the press and even played a non-conference opponent (Winston Salem State) on Tuesday that applied full-court pressure....

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The final part of the preview series looking ahead to the upcoming 2007 Navy baseball season focuses on its outfielders. The final Part I looked at the starting pitchers (Jan. 18), while Part II viewed Navy's relief pitchers (Jan. 24) and Part III took a glimpse of the infielders and catchers (Jan. 30). Navy is scheduled to open up its season with a three-game set at Florida A&M this Friday through Sunday in Tallahassee, Fla.

OUTFIELDERS

The Midshipmen will be looking to replace a combined 99 starts in the corner outfield positions this spring, as outfielders Ryan McGinn, 2006 Second-Team All-Patriot League, and Jared Munde graduated last spring. However, Navy will call upon its returning class and key newcomers to help fill the gap in 2007.

Similar to the starting battle at first base this season, three Mids are competing for a spot out in left field. Freshman Mike Hoosier comes to the Academy after helping Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) to a county championship last spring. The product of Pomona, N.Y., batted .388 with 14 doubles, six triples, four home runs and 25 RBIs, to produce a .746 slugging percentage.

Classmate Michael Speciale is working for a starting position after spending the fall as a quarterback with the junior varsity football team. The native of Pearland, Texas, earned all-state honors with baseball as senior in 2006. The two-time all-county and all-city selection helped his squad to a 19-11 mark last season.

Joining in the competition at left field is junior Bill Maugeri, who will make the transition to outfield after spending his first-two seasons as a reserve infielder. As a sophomore in 2006, Maugeri batted .121 in 16 games with two doubles and a RBI.

"It's truly a wide-open competition between Mike Hoosier, Michael Speciale and Bill Maugeri," stated Kostacopoulos. "Mike (Hoosier) is a raw, talented baseball player that is really strong. We think he can become a solid hitter down the road. Michael (Speciale) is another raw talent that also is a good athlete and could perform for us."

Patrolling center field for the third-consecutive season will be junior Renaldo Hollins. Appearing in all 54 games last season, Hollins batted .302 with five doubles, three triples, 21 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. His 20 base swipes and 62 base knocks rank among the top-10 on the program's single-season record lists. The product of Virginia Beach, Va., posted a team-best 14-game hitting streak during the spring, where he batted .350 with nine RBIs and swiped eight bases. Defensively, Hollins uses his speed to help cover the large territory in the gaps (382' to left-center, 372' to right-center) and to straightaway center field (397' to center).

"Renaldo is an outstanding defensive centerfielder, he runs the ball down very well," said Kostacopoulos. "However, he needs to become more productive offensively in every area - on-base percentage, batting average, action on the bases. We have seen glimpses of what he can do on offense, but needs to perform more consistently."

On days when he is not starting on the mound for the Midshipmen, junior Mitch Harris will hold down right field in 2007. Harris will convert to the outfield after serving as a first baseman on non-pitching days last season. At the plate, Harris tied for the team-lead with a .333 batting average, belting nine doubles, two triples, one home run and 27 RBIs. The product of Mt. Holly, N.C., led the Mids with a .412 average during league play and posted an 11-game hitting streak during the year. He registered 15 multi-hit efforts during his 38 games as a sophomore, including seven multi-RBI performances. The right-handed hitter could also be called upon to serve as the backup to Hollins in center this year.

"Mitch has great potential to become a better hitter," commented Kostacopoulos. "He is arguably our best hitter on the team and has some pop in his bat. The goal for him is to provide that consistency on offense as he does as a pitcher. If he can make that jump as a hitter this year as he did on the mound between his freshman and sophomore seasons, we'd really have something."

When Harris is pitching, Navy will look to Speciale, Maugeri, and freshman Drew Lydon to fill in at right field. Lydon, a product of Riverdale Baptist High School (Md.), batted .508 as a senior with 18 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBIs and earned preseason All-American honors prior to the start of his 2006 season. Freshman Matt Sweisthal may see some opportunities in the corner outfield positions this year. Sweisthal, a left-handed hitter from Spring, Texas, swiped 18 bases and reached base safely at a .481 clip during his senior year at Kleinoak High School.
