To almost no one's surprise, St. John's College beat the Navy Academy at croquet yesterday.

Again.

The score was painfully lopsided, 5-0....

Just a quick pass through . . .
Casual readers should not take too seriously the comments on some of these threads regarding the mind-set of today's brigade. I went to the match yesteday and everybody had a good time; I didn't hear a single mid talk about the "antics" of St. Johns during the Vietnam era. The match is all in good fun and everybody had a good time.

The most important thing for those considering the USNA is to realize that, despite all the gloom and doom you hear about the academics, the physical requirements, etc., etc, etc., we do have time on occasion to . . . have a good time. Not like other schools particularly, but there are relaxing moments here. We go out. We participate in plays. We have concerts. We even play in croquet matches.

If you have an interest, you can find the time and the organization with which to become involved.

I was there during that period and don't remember them being misbehaved at all. Perhaps it was the 10:1 or so ratio of middies over St Johnnies.

Maybe it was Midshipman Urban Legends. Never know, but there was no love lost between the two places in my day, even if the croquet match did go off without a hitch.

As Saturday was '26 days to Herndon,' it was our (26th Co.'s) job to pull some antics or whatever in celebration. We figured that because it was a Saturday, not too many mids would be on the yard to see our handiwork, so we planned for a recon to St. Johns.

After appropriately 'decorating' Herndon, we maneuvered around to the back of the St. Johns campus. After successfully avoiding several drunk 'johnnies,' we made our way to the field where they play the match. We made it to where we intended to hang two banners, but were compromised by two inebriated johnnies who were partying in the building across the field. We gave up being stealthy and just asked if we could hang the banners. They didn't object.

More of them came out and we ended up talking to them for a few minutes. Myself and two others remained focused on the task at hand and got the other banner up. One was a 'Beat St. Johns' and the other a '26 Days' banner. Needless to say, they were gone before the match started, unfortunately.

We encountered no hostility whatsoever, but one girl tried to press her 'even-my-fingernails-are-anti-war' attitude on one of my classmates...and he ended up getting her phone number...but that's a different matter. They were still decent folk, from what I experienced...but the Brigade's attitude toward them still hasn't changed much, I'm sure. You should have heard the roar in King-Dahlgren at lunch when the Croquet captain spoke.

oh dmeix, that has nothing to do with vietnam, its just the brigade having a good time at the expense of the poor lone johnny who, every year, has to get up and give a speech at noon meal. i pity the fool. anyone who went to the match this year would agree that it was a wonderfully amicable and fun-filled event, filled with tradition. i don't think anyone there was holding over resentment from the vietnam era, sakes alive. i asked about 15 people the score, and no one knew...because everyone was too focused on having a good time.

Looked like it was fun

Redemption was at stake yesterday for two St. John's croquet players who took the field at their college against two midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy as part of the 25th annual spring showdown between the Annapolis schools.

Christopher Mules and Tristan W. Evans-Wilent remembered all too well the April day in 2005 when they were partners playing in the deciding game. The pair lost then, handing Navy a rare 3-2 victory in a rivalry both sides enjoy as a way to settle - and display - their differences....
