ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team will open its spring dual meet season Saturday when the Midshipmen take part in the annual VCU 4+1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va. Navy will open the tournament by facing Delaware at 2 p.m., then will play Charlotte at 6 p.m.

Play at the tournament features teams competing against each other in a dual meet consisting of one doubles and four singles matches.

"We look forward to the start of the season," said Navy head coach John Officer. "This is a focused and hard working team comprised of some excellent competitors. We need to compete hard for every point and maintain our composure to give ourselves the best chance to win in our first two matches."

The Mids, who placed second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, return six letterwinners and four additional players from its 2006 squad that posted a 14-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Patriot League.

Navy returns a pair of players who garnered all-league accolades last season in Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) and team captain Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.). Nelms was named to the league's first team and was tabbed as the league's rookie of the year in 2006, while Lai received second-team honors last spring.

Nelms continued his strong play this fall by teaming with Jason Hill (So., Atlanta, Ga.) to receive a doubles ranking of 15th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Also returning for Navy are Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.), who won the 'D' flight at this fall's Old Dominion Invitational, Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.), who reached the 'C' flight final at the ODU Invite, and Johnny Waters (So., Papilion, Neb.), who won 16 matches during the 2006 spring season.
