Navy track

I would really like to continue running at USNA but I'm not quite sure I'm D1 material. (I do a 52.8 400m if that means anything to anyone). Any possibilities of club track/cross country or maybe sneaking on the varsity team by a thread? Anybody know anyone in track? I'm just trying to figure out what sports I could do at the academy. I really want to run or swim but it's not like high school where I can just join the team :/

try not to worry about joining a varsity team just yet. almost all the midshipmen competed and lettered in varsity sports in high school. there will be something for you to do as well as must do. if you don’t make the varsity team, there are intermurals that are less demanding on your time. this allows for you to focus better on academics since you won’t be traveling for competitions.
relax, there will be plenty of time to figure this out.

Great counsel, imo. It’ll be amazing how quickly the scholastic importance of playing ping pong …or whatever …will fade into the whiteworks of I-Day and beyond, becoming secondary to virtually all else!

Nothing beats Army-Navy game and other athletic competition, but USNA time certainly isn’t the luxurious good old days of scholastic day-dreaming about Saturday’s game in Friday’s “Statics of Engineering” class.

Ya, it’s not so much being varsity I’m concerned with, I just want to run/ swim/ stay in good shape. Any such thing as a pushups, situps, and running club?

I am a recruited runner for Navy I will be there with you in the Class of 2013 I am a Multi-Event guy but I specialize in the jumps and hurdles i just ran 14.5h in the 110s yesterday and ran the 400 open in 49.7 and i run the 400 hurdles in 56.5 range but im looking to go sub 55 before this season is over

if you are thinking about trying out for the team send me a pm and we can talk about track a bit more

With regards to track, the team doesn’t actually have cuts until late November when they have the team time trials. So, you essentially have 3 months to build yourself up. With a 52.8, you definitely have a shot at making it. Shoot Coach Cooksey an email.

Also, I’d highly recommend joining a varsity team your first year. You get out of alot of formations and parades, and get to meet people outside of your company.

If your interested in xc, generally they don’t makes cuts (you normally “cut” yourself)

Hit 51.9 today (I was excited) and I’ve got one more chance to improve my time (or two if I make it to regional)…ha it’d be funny if I could straggle on the team after all.
And geez hpfl, beastin it out. I love the cross country comment too. That seems to be how it works in high school too.

My son runs XC and Track for Navy (was recruited). Keep yourself in shape now. There is a Plebe Track Meet at the end of Plebe Summer. The Coaches will be out there to witness. They also get word through the company leadership of the runners to keep an eye on. If you plan to run and not do other events, the Coach you’ll need to get past is Cantello. And, if you’re running XC for Navy, recall that D1 collegiate is an 8K race for XC, so you’ll need endurance plus leg speed. Finally, if you do hope to participate in a Varsity sport at USNA, get your NCAA paperwork done NOW. Do not wait until mid summer to begin this process. Hard to find the high school staff you need to complete it. Plus, you’re in Plebe situation, so contact with the outside world is rough, at best. You do not want to be scrambling for NCAA qualification with a week to go before the first meet. The XC team will be in training all summer, and very intensely from late July onward. They’ll be ready to run, and they’ll expect you to be focused along with them. Stellar academicians, and as someone above stated, locker room and lack of marching is a major plus to a varsity sport. Yes, there are club runners…marathon for one. There are also Mids that do Extreme racing (triathlons).
