Veteto, McCoy and Singleton all on ballot for Academic All-America honors

Nov. 9, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Senior punter Greg Veteto (Corpus Christi, Texas), senior slot back Byron McCoy (Liberty, Mo.) and junior slot back Zerbin Singleton (Decatur, Ga.) have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District II Team by the College Sports Information Director's of America. The three will now be on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.

Veteto, who carries a 3.96 grade point average in Ocean Engineering, has been a pleasant surprise for the Mids in his first year as the starting punter averaging 38.4 yards per kick. Veteto has forced a fair catch on 10 of his 32 punts and another 10 of his punts have been downed inside the 20. He has a 4.0 GPA so far this semester.

McCoy, who carries a 3.62 GPA in Chemistry, has been a terrific special teams player and blocker out of the backfield for the 6-3 Midshipmen. He recovered an on-side kick in the final minute to snuff out a late Pirate rally and forced and recovered a fumble at Stanford on a kickoff. His outstanding blocking has helped pave the way for the nation's top rushing team in the country (324.7 per game).

Speaking of blocking, there may not be a better blocker in the country at the running back position than junior Zerbin Singleton. Singleton, who carries a 3.29 GPA in Aerospace Engineering and who eventually would like to be an astronaut, is a joy to watch on the football field as he unselfishly throws his body around to spring long runs for the Navy offense. Singleton is also a top special teams player, making a remarkable 12 tackles and recovering a fumble. When Singleton has gotten a chance with the ball he has made the most of it, rushing for 111 yards on just 19 carries (5.8 yards per carry) and catching four passes for 60 yards (15 yards per carry).

The Navy Midshipmen travel to Detroit to face a dangerous Eastern Michigan team (kickoff 1 p.m., Comcast). Here is everything you need to know about the game along with a prediction....

Coming off a 38-13 rout of Duke, Navy (6-3) travels to Detroit, Mich. to face the Eagles of Eastern Michigan (1-7) on Saturday afternoon at Ford Field (65,000). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be produced and televised regionally by Comcast Local, which reaches 1.6 million homes in Michigan and Indiana and will also be carried live by Comcast SportsNet, which reaches the Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis corridor and goes as far south as Virginia and North Carolina. Ben Holden and former Michigan State and NFL linebacker Ty Hallock will serve as the game announcers.

Eastern Michigan is a decent team with a horrible record. They are probably the strongest of the Navy's final four regular season opponents. They've played some good teams close and have only been blown out a couple times. Quarterback Andy Schmitt has completed 97 of 155 passes for almost 900 yards. Navy had better get some pressure on him or he'll pick them apart. This is going to be a close game with Navy just pulling out the win.

Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada scored four touchdowns and threw for two more to lead Navy to a 49-21 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback, making only his third career start, engineered seven straight scoring drives, providing the Midshipmen (7-3) with a commanding lead by halftime. He scored on a pair of 1-yard plunges to go along with scoring runs of 9 and 5 yards and finished with 151 passing yards.

Navy scored on all four of its first-half possessions before adding three more second-half touchdowns.

Kaheaku-Enahada's 29-yard touchdown strike to Tyree Barnes with 2:01 remaining in the second quarter capped a dominant half during which the Midshipmen rolled up 282 of its 474 yards of total offense.

Eastern Michigan (1-9) put up its only first-half points on Andy Schmitt's 2-yard quarterback keeper with 6 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Eagles were hampered by a pair of turnovers that kept them off the scoreboard until then.

The Eagles cut into the Navy lead after recovering an onside kick on the second-half kickoff. Tyler Jones finished off a short drive with a 5-yard run, drawing Eastern Michigan to within 28-14.

Jones also added a fourth-quarter 3-yard run for a touchdown, but not until after Kaheaku-Enahada had scored for the third time, putting the game out of reach.
