NBC News Story

Embarrassed to be a Blue Hen when I saw this. Press all over campus. Why is this dude smiling? researching the posts seems like they just kind of skimmed the surface and left out the stuff that made ol hirshey look bad. He resign yet?

Glitch "Accepts" Students to UDel | NBC Philadelphia

here’s another

[Computer blunder mistakenly admits 61 University of Delaware students ? NewsWorks](http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/delaware/item/15321-computer-blunder-mistakenly-admits-61-university-of-delaware-students)

My DD hasn’t received an apology, a letter or an email…just deafening silence

Why should he resign because of a computer glitch?

Its not the glitch. They admit to knowing about this friday night - sounds like immediately. They obviously had the kids involved names, they said they called them all but from the post above maybe not? If they knew there was an issue and could mitigate the effects had they acted earlier? Do you think that if at 9pm on Friday night they can tell that 72 kids signed up for the Decision Days events (11 erroneously)why couldn’t they shoot an email off? Why wait 2-3 days? I know a girl who works in admissions, she says its chaos. Is it only me but I watch this video and it is like an opportunity to sell UD. 'Of course we didn’t want to crush these kids dreams, its a great school, we have to turn down 1000’s of great kids, EVERYONE wants to BE HERE!!!. I think its crappy but it is a fabulous school! I dont hate the scratch in the record, I hate THE SPIN

I’m thinking the 61 students accessing their Blue Hen page and finding the invitation might be some of the smartest kids applying to the school! Maybe admissions should take another look at their applications!

Also note this link gave each student a personalized “Congratulations” not a generic and then they received a confirmation for that read: Thank you for your reservation! We look forward to congratulating you on your acceptance to UD in person on April _ 2011. Please print this page for your records as it serves as your official confirmation and follow the directions below. Free parking is available in the parking garage next to the Roselle Center for the Arts. (Please do not park at a meter on a street.)

Imagine the news of - Sorry this is a computer glitch you are really not accepted. We did say you would receive your decision in the mail???

The Decision Day is for ADMITTED students. It’s not a mistake and it’s not outrageous to put “Congratulations!” on a page for admitted students. The problem is not that the page said congratulations, but rather that the students were able to access this page when they were denied.

I wish this newscaster wasn’t so desperate for viewers that he said they “ripped up the admissions letter in front of your faces.” First of all, there was no admissions letter because they found out online. Second of all, Delaware never explicitly said they were admitted, the page for admitted students (where it makes sense to say “Congratulations!”) siad that.

This was an unfortunate glitch, but Delaware did not do anything wrong. Whether or not they saw that message does not change the fact that those people were denied.

[U</a>. of Delaware, Citing Computer Glitch, Rescinds 61 Acceptances - NYTimes.com](U. of Delaware, Citing Computer Glitch, Rescinds 61 Acceptances - The New York Times)

Another article - and this one mentions CC quite a bit.

Leave it to the NY Times to be the only news outlet ballsy enough to print something more than UD’s “released statement” Gives it more a human angle

YuppittTales - what you are saying is true, but the student had an invitation on the front page of their Blue Hen home when they clicked it they had not just a Congratulations, but a personalized Congratulations “name” and then information on choosing to attend a admitted students day. After they choose the date, they were given a confirmation again with “congratulations” and we can’t wait to congratulate you in person and details about the visit. Also, please print a copy for your records. I feel bad for any hopeful UD student to view all this and be denied or waitlisted. It is very unfortunate. Imagine telling all your friends and being so happy just to find out is was a very big mistake. Im sure each and everyone of these kids are going to be fine and have successful college careers, but I know this is not how they thought it would be. Not to mention they paid a $75 dollar application fee and were put through this!
UD should really take another look at these kids they were the ones extra anxious to attend UD and would most likely make wonderful students! They even found the link they weren’t supposed to touch :(

colnewb - My bad, I just thought they had the “Congratulations” when they clicked to register for the Decision Day. My previous post may have sounded way too harsh and in now way am I trying to place the blame on students, as they truly were the victims in this situation. What happened is unfortunate and I cannot truly comprehend how those people feel, so by me writing that it’s time to move on, while true, may take a while to actually accept what happened. Best of luck to those who are going through this, you will find the right place for you!
