NC Governor's School 2020

Hi everyone!

Is anyone else thinking (way too early) about whether they will get accepted to GS in 2020? I made it past the district level and an alum said I should be very proud! However, I fully expect to be rejected at the state level, so I am revealing my discipline only if I get accepted in March.

Nevertheless, applying was a great opportunity and I am already looking forward to hearing about the experiences of those accepted.

Congrats to everyone who’s made it past their school district, and hope to hear from you here!

(Yes, you can use this thread to discuss roommates/campuses/etc in the spring even if I post my rejection.)

Some questions that I’ll ask (and you don’t have to answer):

What county are you from?
Did your school district have a competitive process to move on to the state level?
What discipline are you interested in (if you’re not following my strategy of keeping it confidential)?
As of now, do you want to stay in-state for college?
If you could choose your campus, which one would you opt for?

For me:
-I attend school in Durham County.
-Yes, it did! Thankfully my friend and I both made it.
-I’m getting more interested in staying in-state than I was in freshman year, mainly because I’m in an early college earning credits that will transfer in-state.
-I would choose East, even though I like the High Point campus too. But I’m totally not biased- the recent alum I talked to loved East. Lol.

You’re welcome to post your stats, ECs and all that, but I personally am not a chance me kind of person so I’ll stick with these questions.

@HopefullyUNC2025 Hi!! Thanks so much for posting! Your school district selection process seems really similar to ours. Social Science was a very competitive discipline at the district level over here, I believe, so congrats for making it past the district!!

I have faith you will get in, but hey, if we both get rejections we can support each other. Really really hoping for acceptance tho.

When I first turned in the application, I 100% thought I was getting rejected and was ambivalent about it. Now my hopes are rising and I’m like noooo! Don’t get them up! But gotta have optimism somehow right?

I wish we didn’t have to wait until March! Good luck until then ^^

@isla701 Hope the best for you as well!!! What discipline did you apply for? I also initially thought that I wasn’t going to get very far, but now that I have a nomination I’m a little optimistic.

Good Luck in March!

@HopefullyUNC2025 Thank you!! I’m in the same situation haha. I’m not revealing which discipline I’m going for unless I get accepted, but I will say that it’s not Social Science. Did a lot of people you know apply?

@HopefullyUNC2025 I’m so glad you made it!! This probably sounds crazy, but I’m getting my ACT scores tomorrow and part of me would rather wait on those and instead know whether I got in or not lol.

I’m annoyed at myself right now because I made a really dumb mistake on the essay… Agh! It’s only slightly off though, hopefully it won’t be too big of a deal…

@isla701 I agree! I’ve been thinking a lot about the Governor’s school, so much so that I think I would be very devastated if I don’t get in. Overall I’m trying to be optimistic and focus on other things. I honestly can’t wait until March.

@HopefullyUNC2025 every single sentence you wrote here is exactly how I’m feeling lol. It doesn’t help that my ACT scores don’t appear to be coming on Day 1. The waiting game is brutal lol, I guess it’s good practice for next year. Hopefully other folks applying find us!

@HopefullyUNC2025 Getting a little bit closer to T -1 month! Can’t come fast enough!

I wanted to ask what your backup plans are for the summer? I’m trying to lay them all out now so I can feel empowered and in control if I get rejected, but at the moment idk what I’m gonna do.

I’ve considered taking an online class through my school, getting a job, going back to a camp counselor program I liked, or maybe applying for a writing camp at UNC or the governor’s page program (those are weeklong). I’m also reserving my spot at UNCG music camp in advance, thank gosh that’s not selective, but as much as I’d love to go back there (it’d be my fifth year) I still want to get into GS more!

@isla701

I was just thinking about this lol. I really want to use Junior year/summer to push myself, so Ive been planning a lot. Some things I planned In case I don’t get in, which I hope won’t be the case: I applied for a paid internship program around the same time I applied for NCGS just to be safe. I also could possibly do an internship in the work field Im interested in as well. But yeah although even with NCGS I will be busy, I really want to go. I want to meet people who have a common interests in the discipline I applied for, and to get to hear their opinions on things, IDK. Anyways there is only a little over a month left until decisions!

Overall how’s Junior Year treating you.

Good luck to you both! My D20 went last year, Meredith Campus. She had a wonderful time and wishes she could go every year. Hopefully you will both be able to attend. She will be there for the alumni day this summer.

@HopefullyUNC2025 ooh, what do you use to search for internships? Here in the Triangle there are so many but most of them are looking for college kids so it’s hard to sort them out!

I really want to go too, but this past weekend made peace with the idea of a rejection and am actually excited for other possibilities  hopefully that self-love strategy carries over if I actually get that letter.

Junior year is treating me pretty well!! I transferred to my early college just this year, so a part of it still feels new and exciting. I really like my college classes and things available to me. Mostly my focus has been on staying happy in my personal life, since I pay a lot of attention to politics and the news which can get me down.

How about you?

@chb088 I’m so glad your D had a great time! The person I talked to who went last year did as well! Alumni day sounds exciting. Fingers crossed on an acceptance, but just like with a top college, I’m trying not to hinge too much on it (it’s hard with GS because it’s more unique than any individual college imo)!

By the way, which discipline did your D go for?

@HopefullyUNC2025 No worries!! Thanks for responding! I’m glad this program is available to you! I’m definitely going to talk to my counselor soon. Eek! 25 days until notices are emailed to superintendents!

I wonder how fast the information will be communicated from the district office to the schools, lol.

So…Governor’s School results are coming out either next week or the week after that! How do you feel about that? I’m scared, but I just want to know if I got in or not.

@HopefullyUNC2025 I really want to know when or if my school will be able to notify me or whether I will have to wait for the letter!

Recently I’ve been feeling ambivalent but nervous now that it’s closer. Good news is I had a teacher talk to me about internships! She came to me and I feel so fortunate. I’m applying to one before the deadline this weekend and will notify them if I’m doing GS instead.

Fwiw, this teacher is amazing and she thinks I will get in. But even supersmart adults sometimes are surprised by the competition for top students these days. Nevertheless, her endorsement was welcome and I hope it plays out. If not, I have more great options thanks to her!

@HopefullyUNC2025 okay my heart is pounding even though I truly doubt I will hear anything tomorrow. Coronavirus news not helping. Trying to chill out xP I’m so nervous!

I’ll also look really silly on this thread if I end up getting rejected, but maybe it’ll be good- show posterity that people on CC are only human!

Messaging my counselor asking how the result will be communicated. How are you doing?

@isla701 Hi! I’m just as nervous to be honest. I’m expecting the news this week from my counselor and I also realized I’d look really dumb in this thread if I didn’t get it. Hopefully it turns out well for both of us.

@isla701 Honestly I feel the wait is getting me more nervous than the actual decision.

@HopefullyUNC2025 Well, we can both look silly together, one be happy for the other, or both be elated. Not too bad when you think about it that way

That is such a mood. It’s the adrenaline for sure. I know that when I get a result back, I tend to be in a funk for a few hours no matter what it is as my brain stops releasing all those stress chemicals. Currently I’m procrastinating on an assignment by thinking about it, lol. Let me know if you hear anything, and again good luck!

(Btw, my counselor messaged me back immediately, told me to be proud of myself for getting this far, and said that she’d be on the lookout and give me the choice as to whether I want the result by email or in person. She’s the best  I’ll let you know if I hear anything at all!)
