I just have one, simple question: How do you get into governor's school?

I know the basics, such as a good gpa, rank, etc. I want to know the meat of the answer. Every person who I see get accepted into the program is exceptional. The only problem is, I like social science and math, and math I am good at, but I do not stand a great chance because of my ethnicity (ASIAN boy).

Also another question: they ask for an aptitude test for social science. I'm confused. Does that include social studies. AP tests on social sciences? WHA?

Hey hahavahdhopeful! I’m going to nc governor school this summer for mathematics so hopefully I can answer some of your questions :)

Yeah you’re right about needing to have a good gpa, grades, etc but a kinda big part of the selection process is where you’re from. Governor school is all about having a “representative” group of students so they will try to select students from all regions of NC. So if you’re applying from an area where lots of other people apply too, then you’ll have a harder time of getting in than somebody who’s applying from like my region where not a lot of people apply. This is kinda unfair because some brilliant people might get cut while less exceptional (but still qualified) students get in just because their area needs to be represented. But this is just a minor obstacle, because the biggest thing in the end is still how well you present yourself in your application!

Moving on, I don’t see why your ethnicity should stop you from applying for math. I’m asian too (but I’m also a girl so…that could’ve helped me lol) And yeah, there’s apparently only like a couple of asians who will be in my class and the majority is caucasian. But I think its because a lot of governor school asians are from the Durham-Raleigh-Chapel Hill area (and yes I’m stereotyping/generalizing), but those asians are super smart in math already and they don’t need/want to take math (because really…NC gov school isn’t that prestigious) so they apply for other areas. Whether or not that’s true, apply for math if you want to! Governor school only seems to discriminate based on your geographic area.

And I might be wrong, but I don’t think there’s a specific aptitude test that you have to take for social science. Everyone who applies has to take this super easy general aptitude test that just tests your logic and stuff. No worries at all.

I hope all that helped! Feel free to ask any other questions :)

thanks roseyrox22! that is such great help. @chaseholl: my school is HUGE (3000+ students; Myers Park High in Charlotte, NC) but you get nominated by signing up if you’re interested (hehe, lucky, right?) and our school gets to nominate many people (10+ i think) so yeah. thanks anyways!

I am a school counselor in NC. To apply to Governor’s School, you have to meet 3 score cutoff. You have to score 92% or higher on an Achievement test, 92% or higher on an Aptitude test, and 92 or higher on the most recent grade in area of nomination. Achievement test scores include EOC tests, PLAN test, etc. Aptitude has to be a nationally standardized test such as Otis Lennon or Cognitive Abilities Test. Of course, overall class rank and GPA are very important. Just want you to know that you have to meet those 3 scores cutoffs before you can even apply.
