NC School of the Arts

My daughter was recently accepted here, and I would appreciate hearing from anyone familiar with this school. Specifically I would like to know what is its relationship with UNC--the website says it is a "constituent institution" but not sure what that means. Do you get your diploma from UNC or from the school?

Also any comments from current students--do you like it or not, and why--would be welcome!

TaraMom: 'Constituent Institution' just means that it's part of the UNC system, and there are 16 campuses within that system, which includes NC School of the Arts, located in Winston Salem. The actual degree would be from the NC School of the Arts. I've known students who have gone there for their high school years, in both dance and theatre, and only a couple of people who have gone there for college. It has an excellent reputation..some programs are stronger than others, from what I understand. The School of the Arts is known for training their students to be able to go straight into their field after graduation--whether that be with a professional ballet company, or on Broadway. And their students typically go on to do great things in theatre, dance, and film-making. Your daughter must be very good at what she does to have been accepted there. It is not a school for anyone remotely interested in academics, however--but extremely strong in performing arts (and film-making, I believe), and in that sense--more like a conservatory, I guess. Maybe someone who currently attends will reply here and be more helpful. Congratulations on her acceptance, though! No small feat.

It offers extremely strong BFAs.

Read up on it in the news though. I believe that there have been several news stories about unprofessional (sexual) conduct among professors.

Displaced NYer: Wow. I hadn't read anything about that. I know a year or so ago (maybe in 2004?), there was a misappropriation of funds to the tune of about $1 million, I think, which involved some very high level administrators. But I never heard anything about sexual misconduct.

Thank you very much Jack for your explanation and kind words.

My D was accepted into their theater design & production program. I had heard it was one of the best schools for this in the country, but can't get much of a feel for it. I guess they are aware of their reputation--I saw it referred to once as "North Carolina School of Attitude" ;)
Yes I imagine being a conservatory program, academics are less emphasized. I didn't realized it included a high school program though. We are considering visiting there during D's spring break.

Thanks again and I hope others will add more comments.

TaraMom: Yes, I think their theatre program, including design/production, really is excellent. Enjoy your visit. It's a beautiful school with excellent facilities. Very impressive. And check out their web site, if you haven't already. They also list what their alumni are doing now, specifically the graduates from theatre design/production.

NCSA provides an excellent education at the high school and college level. The school owns the largest collection of vintage movies in the world and has frequent screenings for students and annually puts on a "Nutcracker" production at Christmas that rivals any in the country. The "sexual misconduct" was in the early nineties and involved two openly gay male dance instructors who were accused of pressuring students to examine their own sexuality. As I recall the instructors both left the school. The misappropriation involved funds that were largely used for appropriate school activities (other than a leased car for an administrator) but which were not accounted for through the NCSA state budget but rather through a not-for-profit organized by school administration. The administrator with the leased car has left the school.

It is a rigorous performance oriented school with many graduates on Broadway (check a Playbill), in movie production, with great orchestras and with great dance troupes.

TaraMom - I was recently accepted into North Carolina School of the Arts' BFA Acting Program. If your daughter is interested in talking with another upcoming freshman, please let me know!

Joshua

glasshalfful, the more I hear, the more interesting this place sounds. I'm glad you cleared up the misconduct issue.

Joshua thanks very much for your offer and I'll certainly tell her. Now I'm trying to find a cheap flight out there. Have you actually decided, or still thinking?

I have not decided yet...I'm going down April 22nd to get a better feel for the program We shall see!

Joshua

Does NCSA have a BFA MT or does it only offer a BFA in Drama/Acting

Also, does anyone have any idea of the acceptance rate for males in either the acting or MT BFA (if it exists)?

brown101: I don't know the answer to your questions, though I do know that NCSA is very strong in musical theatre--just not sure of the degree awarded. I'd check their web site if you haven't already, and if you can't find it there, you could email them and ask. Hope that helps.

Does anyone know anything about the wig and makeup design program there??

NCSA is wonderful - I currently attend there too, and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.
And no, there is no sexual misconduct - you probably heard that from the newly released book "Mozart in the Jungle" which describes an NCSA oboist's experiences in the 70's...times deffinetly have changed.
