I am in the same boat…“under review”…
congratulations on you admission! I applied to industrial design in mid-october, so I included some product design/ sculptural pieces in my portfolio. The wait for me continues…
good luck to all!

I have applied to six schools overall but most, like nc state, said that I wouldn’t hear back to march or April, but a few have responded early and be more I go to nc state the more I love it and it is definitely my number one choice now! How about you?
And lunetta good luck! I hope you hear back soon!

Oh that’s awesome it’s my top choice too! I just have to convince my parents though, I don’t think they realize how great the program is.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to find out!

Thank you!!! We’ll see how everything unfolds.
I wanted to ask- Is there anyone who has visited the college of design and can speak to the nature of its programs? I’m really wondering how disciplinary they are, because I think it’s really critical to be within a collaborative atmosphere as an artist/designer/architect/(what have you…)
Does anyone know? What are the facilities like? I would really appreciate it!!

I am still in design review…getting a little nervous haha I just want to know already!!

emsemba -
Congratulations on your acceptance! I was a bit confused when you said you were “accepted” via email. COD acceptance has, in the past, always been a 4-5 month long process. However, I asked around (my daughter is an in-state junior in Art+Design), and learned that this is the first year they are extending acceptances without the portfolio review/interview weekend in January. So, hats off to you, your academic and portfolio submissions must have really impressed. Good Luck!

Thank you! Do you think you could tell me a bit about how your daughter likes the program and why you decided to choose NCSU over other schools? I absolutely love the program and I’m set on going there, but my parents are not too convinced because I have been accepted into other schools that are generally regarded as more academically “prestigious”. Thanks :)

ensemba- where else did you apply? from what you have said it sounds like your parents are also the same as mine, I’m in love with nc state but they would rather me go elsewhere

Lauraelizbeth: I also applied to Michigan, Illinois, Notre Dame, Wash U, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, and Purdue, how about you?

Emsemba- Michigan, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Ohio State and NC State!

Emsemba, (my apologies for the length)

We are in NC, so I must preface by saying that in-state tuition was a strong pull for us. She is committed to not digging herself into debt, so I wanted to give that perspective up front. She (and we) are a bit counter-culture in that regard. We are not paying for “prestige”, we are paying for a Art+Design Education, and we fortunately have that in-state.

My D’s college applications were not as far and wide as yours. She visited many schools far from home, but eventually applied only to those closer. She had 4 yrs at a Visual Arts magnet high school, so she started by visiting and talking to mostly Fine Art schools to focus on Illustration. She visited schools in Colorado, Kansas City, Baltimore, Savannah, etc. But as she visited, and weighed her true desires, she realized that what she really wanted was Design, not Fine Arts. When she made that decision, NC State came to the fore in her mind. She was accepted to BFA programs at VCU, Appalachian State, and SCAD to name a few, but when she visited NCSU, saw the resources they have, met the faculty during the interview stages, and met alumni in her hometown, NC State became her #1 choice. NCSU was however the last to give final acceptance, around mid-March (nerve-racking!).

She enjoys the COD immensely. It’s her small family within the larger community. The University has around 36,000 students, but the COD has only about 800, I think. She’s always liked being the odd person-out, and loves the exclusivity of being a “Design Student” on a predominantly engineering, science, and business heavy school. In NC, being a student in the COD at NCSU carries a bit of weight. It means you rose above a 1000 other kids and made it in, but I know that means little to out-of-state folks. The Freshman cohort that she has been with now for 2 1/2 years is incredibly talented, have become close friends, and have helped raise her craft, for which she is thankful. None of her fellow students have felt the need to join a frat or sorority. As Freshman they all quickly bonded, practically live in studio together, and had fun in Raleigh throughout the year. In a sense, she has found her “tribe”.

I realize the COD at NC State may not seem academically “prestigious” to out-of-staters, since most only think of our long and successful history in agricultural and engineering majors. But the COD does have a great reputation (and got some good PR this year when her Professor, Justin LeBlanc, made it to the finals on Project Runway). Also, I have had to change my thinking over the years as well. Academics and grades are important, to a point. Heck, they helped my D get into the COD. But in the life of an artist-designer, at some point, mastering your craft/gift and building the portfolio are truly what matter. That’s been hard for me to accept as a left-brained, analytical parent.

In the end it really is a balancing act of deciding where you feel most at home, what you can afford long-term, and which school has the program best suited to what you want to master. Best of luck to you!

Klinger: Thank you so much for the response, it was really helpful! I really appreciate it and it has given me a lot more insight into the program.

Has anyone gotten an invitation yet? rejection news? anything other than the few acceptances? My status still has not changed from design review!

Yolanda- mine is still design review, hopefully this doesn’t mean anything bad…Maybe it’s because the admission process changed? Good luck, we’re in this together

Update: I just received a letter from the Design College… I’ve been invited to the admissions review!! EEP!!

That’s so exciting good luck!!!

I hope it goes well for you Yolanda28!

Yayyyyy got an interview!!!

what majors did everyone apply to? I applied to Industrial Design.

I applied for architecture!
