Hey guys current NCSU student and happy to answer any questions about state or dorms etc! I lived in Bragaw last year and had friends in almost every dorm so I can definitely try and help with any dorm specific questions.
Thanks! Any insight into the living and learning villages? Is the engineering dorm all guys? Too nerdy? Know anyone in the Impact Leadership village? Trying to see if itâs better to be in a village or take luck of the draw with random assignment.
Hey! So I did not live in a village myself but I did have friends who did luckily! The engineering dorm is more guys than girls however one of my friends who is a girl lived in the engineering village and she didnât mind the ratio lol. She thought it was really nice to live with people who could be study partners, help with homework, and understood how much work engineering is. Also her entire suite was girls in engineering and she liked having that in common as well. I think this is the same for most villages because a large portion of the residents have something in common and it can be quite helpful. The major specific villages (engineering, WISE, etc) were also very conducive to hw and studying during quiet hours which can be a plus compared to regular dorms. Also the village members get extra opportunities as well however some villages require an extra class.
I will say I had friends who lived in the same residence hall as the Impact village, but they werenât in the village so you got me there lol, but I can answer questions about the actual building.
Also I think to decide on the village or not you have to see what kind of experience youâd like (more in common/more focused vs free for all living) to make that choice. Also unless itâs changed even if you arenât in a village you can rank your top 3 dorm buildings for housing and you have a high chance of getting one of those. Also you have to apply to a village so that is extra work and you are not guaranteed to be chosen.
Oops after reading the thread I see now that housing eliminated the option to rank your top 3 dorm choices, but honestly each dorm on campus has pros/cons. Some are certainly bigger but not as centrally located, while those are much smaller, Also canât lie some nicer dorms are over towards the honors quad, but that is a bit more of a walk. None of the dorms are bad it just depends on what you are looking for. I can definitely break down individual buildings and types of living (suite/hall/apartment/hotel styles).
Does anyone know if University Towers is part of the regular NCSU housing pool for next near? I was under the impression that was independently owned (like Granville at UNC), but their website implies that for freshmen, itâs part of the random housing pool.
FWIW, I noticed a couple of other large universities are doing the random housing assignments for freshmen too (FSU & Tennessee).
For anyone who was considering it - Just heard back from University Towers - itâs no longer an option for freshmen. NCSU has changed the first year requirement to on-campus living, UT is privately owned. They can live there after freshman year.
NCSU has made so many changes regarding housing at this point. I will say although UT wouldâve been a guaranteed location vs the randomness of on campus living it is a bit nicer as a freshman to be more centrally located and surrounded by more students. It is also required to have an on campus meal plan as a freshman and UT has their own dining hall which is not apart of campus dining. Thatâs 2 meal plans to purchase and if you join greek life that is most likely another meal plan, so 3 total as a freshman. Although UTâs meal plan is not required people were walking much longer to get to a dining hall, whereas most other dorms are located within a short distance to a dining hall or Talley. I also had a friend who lived in UT and she feels that she missed out on some of the dorm experience. Truly any dorm you are assigned on campus is not bad.
Thanks for the feedback! My older daughter lived in Granville at UNC and did fine with just having their meal plan - although I was worried about it at first. Weâd give her money on her campus card so she eat at on-campus restaurants. We also knew to pick the smallest meal plan since she was going Greek and we had to pick up their meal plan as well.
I agree - thereâs a lot to be said about having the on-campus dorm experience and being close to the action! Having dorm selection be random takes some of the stress out of the process as well. Thanks again!
Does anyone know when we can expect to hear back about villages?
Any insight into what itâs like to live in the global village?
Itâs usually all international students and very few American students mixed throughout, and those are usually global studies type majors. It could be a cool experience though!
Honors village or Engineering village? Any feedback?
I filled out my housing application with my friend the day it opened. We both assumed that we would be given an option to say what dorms we would prefer to live in, but there was nothing of that nature. Will we have any say in which dorms we are put in, or is it completely random? We did not request to be in a village. Thank you!
Iâm pretty sure if you did not apply to a village it will be random.
Is it pretty hard to get into Engineering Village?
hey, how does the 8 meal credits work? Is it for 8 different meals on a campus restaurant? Is the dining dollars equivalent to normal dollars?
Itâs usually not that hard because the village is housed in a huge dorm.
Will the housing agreement be terminated without any penalty if someone withdraws from the university before classes start?
