Hi, I've been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill and NC State and am having trouble deciding. I am running out of time so any answer would be greatly appreciated. I plan on eventually becoming either a physician or a dentist, so I really need to go somewhere that has a good advising department for health professions. Initially I thought UNC Chapel Hill would be the best choice, but after attending their open house i'm not quite convinced that they offer much guidance to pre med students. On the other hand, NC State has really impressed me with the Health PAC organization. It seems very well structured and offers a great route for any health career. Also, I think I would have an easier time getting a high science gpa at NCSU than at UNC, which is crucial for med school admissions. I have also been invited to the Scholars Program at State, and am an alternate for the Honors College (though I probably won't get it). For these reasons I am leaning towards State. What I don't like about NC State is that I will already be taking courses geared toward my major as a freshman. If i don't like the major I am in, it might be difficult to switch majors and graduate in time. At UNC, I would have time to explore different fields before declaring a major. UNC is also the more prestigious school and more well known for its academics (although i know you shouldn't pick a college solely on it's reputation). Sorry if this is a lot, but I would really appreciate any comments! Thanks

Did you visit the pre-health advising office at UNC? They are quite good. This is their website [About Pre-Health Advising ? Health Professions Advising](http://preprofessionaladvising.unc.edu/pre-health)

Also keep in mind that UNC Health Systems and the UNC Medical School is right on campus. Offering many opportunities for involvement and research that can help make you a more competitive applicant to med schools (beyond just the critical GPA & MCAT scores).

I would agree that UNC will be more of a challenge to achieve a high GPA. Organic Chemistry here can really make you question your academic abilities.

Lastly, if an honors program is important to you, you can apply for Honors Carolina admission once you are at UNC. Also, anyone can take honors classes at UNC.

Is this even a question? NC State doesn’t even have a med school. Why on earth would you pick that school UNC all day every day! Seriously though, if you’re smart enough to get into UNC, then you should be smart enough to understand that UNC clearly outweighs any aspect of bio/medicine of NC State.

NC State has a very impressive undergraduate program for careers in healthcare and boasts a very high rate of placement into medical/health professional programs. As you mentioned, the Health PAC organization is strong and works to nuture and develop students to meet their goals. State’s sciences are certainly top notch too.

UNC’s programs are excellent, the competition quite intense and as New Yawk indicated, some of the classes might make you question your sanity.

There are many paths to med school. A friend of the family, who is a gifted athlete, decided to run track at Western Carolina. There he majored in Chemistry and Spanish, loved his undergraduate college career and is in medical school now.

My niece went to NC State and my daughter is going to UNC and I’ll have to agree NC State’s PAC program is pretty awesome. It seems very well organized and they really ensure each prehealth student’s application is as strong as possible. They coordinate every aspect of it. I couldn’t find anything comparable at UNC so I’m going to be adapting State’s outline in conjunction with the advising UNC provides.

The schools are meant to balance each other. For Business/A&S, UNC has the upper hand. For Engineering, NC State is better. Figure out what you want to do and decide!
