I am out of state for both and intend on majoring in engineering. The cost will be approximately the same. What are some pros and cons of both. Which is more prestigious. What does each school have to offer that the other may not.

They are very similar schools.

VA Tech may be slightly higher ranked in engineering overall. But NC State is a top school nationwide if you’re doing something like Nuclear or Chemical Engineering. VA Tech may have some particular engineering majors that they excel in nationally but I’m not familiar with them.

I think VA Tech has greater national, or at least east coast name recognition, especially in the Baltimore-Washington area where a lot of VA Tech students come from. VA Tech may be slightly more “prestigious” because of this.

Location is the only really big difference. If you like small, snowy mountain towns far away from anything go to VA Tech; if you prefer to be in a metro area go to NC State.

I would encourage you to visit both universities and get a feel for them.

Jacob nails it on the head - location is the really big difference. The campuses have a very different feel. Not sure if this helps or not. I will add that S went through this same process last year and chose NCSU over VT. For him, it has turned out to be a great choice. Please note that I am biased in this, since I went to VT.

What it really comes down to for these two schools, is “Where do you want to live for 4 years?”
