Interesteddad or anyone else savvy enough to do it , since I am in dial up hell (and have an '83 Yugo computer) can you do a sort to give us the bottom 100 D3 schools in per capita spending. I am expecting to see Warren Wilson and Antioch and COA. I wonder who it really is?

Here are the next 150 schools in total spending. This will probably capture most of the schools people are interested in.

I don't see much correlation between low spending and high academic quality.

My S attends one on the middle of this list. It appears from the information they spend less than 1% of tuition cost for atheletics. I don't see that as bad. Is that the point? Especially since roughly a quarter of the student body is involved in sport. And they were D3 football champs a couple years back.

Is the point to show wasteful spending?.92 I don't think is that wasteful.
idad, I was just wondering how many of those top 100 did not have football teams. Football must be the most expensive sport for a school simply because of the large number required for a team.
Below are the top 100 DIV III non-football schools in total spending. IMO, if it were possible to wave a magic wand and silence the alumni, a large number of Division III schools would drop football. It paints a small college into a corner in so many ways. For example, to win a game in football, an LAC with 1500 students has to allocate 10% of its male admissions to football recruits. Football and ice hockey recruiting requires compromising academic standards more than any other sport. So, you have an impact on the campus culture and you have a real dilmemma -- allocate your low-band slots to football/hockey or diversity? It's a zero sum game. From an athletics standpoint, football recruiting sucks up slots from all the other sports. So, you undermine women's swimming, men's tennis, track 'n field, and so on and so forth.

The admissions directors all know the problem. But, even suggesting that you might drop football is about as inflammatory as a Senator suggesting getting rid of Social Security.

Dartmouth practically rode their admissions dean out of town on the rail when it came to light four years after the fact that he had written a personal letter to the President of Swarthmore applauding the decision to drop football (from an admissions perspective). The alumni wanted his head.

The same dynamics apply to academically oriented Div I schools, only there its the financial cost of fielding a competitive team. Rice talked about dropping out of Div I football because they can't win a game and, frankly have no prospects of ever winning against the budgets that the USCs and Notre Dames bring to the party. The alumni went nuts.

Wow! $14 per student at Baruch? This might set off a stampede of applications from the anti-sports crowd. Two of my cousins got MBAs there because it's so darn convenient for Wall Street types to attend night school. Not a lot of time for sports participation among that demographic. This list is probably the most diverse group of schools I've ever seen, linked by one common thread. Kind of like Thanksgiving dinner with H's family.....

Here's a recent article on the imapct of Rutgers football on admissions candidate quality & $$ flowing in:
http://www.nj.com/printer/printer.ssf?/base/news-6/116935838616330.xml&coll=1
A few quotes from the article:
Rutgers University's storybook football season touched off a national case of Scarlet fever, and new applications and dollars are rolling in.

Carol Herring, president of the Rutgers Foundation, said football frenzy likely factored into a 35 percent increase in overall giving to the university compared to the same period as last year.

The increase in applicants means Rutgers can be more selective when it comes to admitting students to the New Brunswick campus, which will maintain the same enrollment in the fall '07 semester as last year, McAnuff said. The campuses in Newark and Camden -- where applications have also jumped -- may grow, he added.

"Because the applications are up and they are strong, we are anticipating a higher GPA (grade point average) and test scores," McAnuff said.

Is the point to show wasteful spending?
It's just data. I expect that everyone would come up with his or her own "point".

I find it interesting that the article I linked mentions that applications to both Rutgers Newark & Rutgers Camden have benefited from this football boost. This despite their per pupil budgets of $141 & $168 respectively.

Thanks for that data, idad.

I don't see much correlation between low spending and high academic quality.

You very seldom see a correlation between perceived academic quality and low spending! That's why the USNEWS rankings march in such close lockstep with per student endowment.

But some would have you believe there is a correlation between schools emphasizing sports over other activities at the D3 level and a resulting decline in academic quality. If that were the case, one might wonder why there are not a great number of the highest rated D3 academic schools clustered at the bottom of this list. Then again, maybe there is no correlation at all. Highly rated academic institutions appear to be across the board.

Something for everyone as it were, from way sporty to not very sporty .

I believe that is probably reflected somehow by the student body, or is this a "chicken or the egg" kind of thing? They go there because the school de-emphasizes sports, or the school de-emphasizes sports because they go there. I dunno.

Am I missing something? I don't see the women's colleges here--Smith, Wellesley . . .Curious how they fit in this puzzle.

I think it's a more complex equation than that. The "perceived academic quality" of schools is highly correlated to per student spending. The "prestigious" schools spend the most money and they spend it across the board -- sports and other student activities, libraries, faculty salaries, etc. The differences in total spending among the schools on this list bury the differences in athletic spending. You won't find the most "presitigous" schools at the bottom of the spending list in ANY category. They are "prestigious" because they spend a lot and have done so for a very long time.

The sports equation is further complicated by the size of the schools and the number of sports each competes in.

I think the only firm conclusion you can universally draw from this particular data is exactly what the national convention of Div III schools concluded last week: that the DIV III tent has gotten too big and too varied to be a viable athletic conference.

As for choosing a college, I think this data adds one more piece of a large jigsaw puzzle, just like diversity stats, average SATs, binge drinking rates, graduation rates, PhD production, acceptance rates, and so on. The sum total of enough of these discrete data points allows you to start to understand the priorities and culture of each school.

For example, some have suggested that Williams is not really a "jock" school. Well, this data certainly disproves that notion. It's the second highest spending school and the highest per student spending school in Div III athletics. The expenditures show exactly why Williams wins the Div III Sears Cup every year.

Likewise, some suggest that Swarthmore is a "geek" school that doesn't put any resources into athletics. The data certainly suggests that conventional wisdom is false.

Or, too look at a closer comparison: Haverford and Swarthmore. Both spend about the same per student on athletics, but Haverford spends a higher percentage of its per student spending on sports. Thus, it might be reasonable to conclude that Haverford places a slightly higher priority in allocating its zero-sum resources on athletics than Swarthmore does, i.e. it chooses athletic spending over spending on some other "extra" that it could spend on.

"But some would have you believe there is a correlation between schools emphasizing sports over other activities at the D3 level and a resulting decline in academic quality."

I think there is, but only to the extent that schools heavy in SPECTATOR sports (along with other factors) often have high rates of binge and heavy drinking. And binge and heavy drinking are NEVER included in measures of academic quality (and I think they should be.)

The data comes from a mandatory federal reporting agency that has to do with Title IX equity in athletics: female versus male sports. None of the women's colleges appear in the data. Since they have no male sports, they must be exempt from the reporting.

Also, you are into the realm of qualitative assessments. For that, you would have to look closely at each school. What is the perception of academic engagement by the faculty? And, so forth. That kind of thing is never going to show up in data. However, it is possible to do those kinds of qualitative evaluations if you start digging into a school's newspaper, faculty reports, accreditation self-studies, etc.

Look at these very good to excellent choices where the numbers are low, low. There is truly a rear for every seat.

One thing they have in common is they are larger than some of the LAC's which certainly drives the per capita costs down but still - I do think there are some observations that can be made about about environment, even to just compare them against there like-sized but more sports interested compadres.

Cur:

Yeah, but you have to look at the total spending, too. Emory and Tufts both have signficant athletic programs, but have such large student bodies relative to DIV III schools that their per student number is miniscule.

Remember, the number of athletes is fixed -- typically somewhere between 250 and 800, depending on the number of teams. There is virtually no variable cost component as the enrollment increases -- as there is with overall per student spending (because you have to hire more professors, operate more dorms, cook more food, etc.)

Maybe you would prefer to look at the top 150 DIV III schools in spending per athletic roster spot (2004-05):
