NCSSM Applicants 2011/ Class of 2013 Results

My name is Erica Shook … but I just did online evan though by the looks of things at who got in at my school I could have gotten accepted to Residential but I play sports
(not offered at NCSSM: Ice Hockey and Lacrosse) and I want to play in college… so Online works best for me  Congrats to all of you who got in and good luck to all who are Appealing or waitlisted!

If you haven’t already, go to [N.C.S.S.M Class of 2013 | Facebook](N.C.S.S.M Class of 2013) and let us future seniors creep…err…I mean assist you all in questions :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, do study for the placement tests. You don’t want to be placed into something you are good at and be bored for 2-3 trimesters. Especially with Mathematics, we have so many cool ones above Calculus. :P

Rahsaan Bray NCSSM c/o 2013 and I can’t wait to get there. I’ve been prepping for this since the 7th grade. New friends, new sights, and new challenges. Congrats to all the folks who got in and good luck to the appeals crew. See ya soon.

Okaayy… I haven’t taken Chemistry yet (I feel kind of left behind because A LOT of people are already taking AP Chem and stuff…) and I’m worried about the Chem Placement test on Welcome Day… What Chem classes can I get into as a novice??

So I’m pretty freaked out about the placement tests. I mean I’m not dumb, and I’m especially good at math. But some people that applied have AP Chemistry classes and such. My school doesn’t even offer Honors Chemistry. And they don’t let us double up on math or science so I just took Honors Biology last semester and I’m just now in Honors Algebra 2…I don’t want to be placed in the lowest level class but I don’t think I’m prepared enough for a super high level class. Stupid poor 400 student school…

Don’t worry! I didn’t take Chemistry before coming here either, and I was placed into General Chemistry (equivalent to Honors) for the first two trimesters. Because I want to take more AP classes (I haven’t taken any except this year), I am now taking AP Chemistry II, and I had no trouble adjusting over. The lowest Chemistry class we have here is Chemistry by Inquiry, but I feel like that class is useless (however, I do understand that some people may not particularly excel in certain areas). I do advise that you study some Physical Science before Welcome day. The science placement tests do not actually test if you know the subject, but rather, the pace in which you should be whilst learning. Don’t worry or over-study (this will result in placing you in some really high level of Chemistry that you may not feel comfortable in). Just relax and review. :)

Again, don’t worry so much about what you’re placed in! I was in the same exact situation last year that you are in now. Since you’re especially good at math, then you probably catch on to topics quick. I highly advise you to review your Algebra II in depth so you can place into something like Precalc w/Advance Topics. Last year, I was top in my old school, so I didn’t feel a need to study. I was placed into General Precalculus and was bored for two trimesters until now (Trig. is probably the only new math I’ve learned this year). [The Precalc w/Advance Topics classes were full, and my placement score was borderline. <- If that happens again, bring the issue to Student Government!]

To everyone: placement does not determine your classes permanently! (Just don’t completely blow it. That’s just weird for the graders.) When you start classes here, there’s always room for adjustment, especially when you have other classes to worry and spend time on.

(I apologize for this gigantic wall of text.)

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better  I think I’m going to review before, just so that I do my absolute best.

Oh btw, do you know my brother? His name is Jose Medrano. He is in Second West.

Yup, I know him :stuck_out_tongue: Do you know what hall you plan to be on next year?

I’m not sure. I think guy halls have cooler stereotypes :stuck_out_tongue: Haha I don’t know, I think maybe one in Bryan…

Girl hall stereotypes are not very applicable :stuck_out_tongue: Bryan is cool, you’ll probably get a tour on Welcome day. I remember touring 2nd Bryan on my welcome day, and I was glad I ended up in it. ^_^

Haha sounds good  I’m excited!!! I’m ready to apply for a senior brother and for Welcome day and for move in day especially!!!

Oh man… This is going to be a lot of fun… xP
ahaha, let’s just hope that I don’t start hyperventilating and faint at the sight of the questions… =)
I’m super excited… I know numerous people who go to NCSSM already, and I’m ready to tackle on whatever they’re going to throw at me! Bring it on! =D

Hi, I am a parent of a child who attended NCSSM, and after reading about people stressing over the placement tests, I thought I would post. These are not tests to assess your competence, but to be sure you are placed in the right classes. A math class at one school may not cover the same material as the same class in another school. All the classes are challenging, so you really want to be placed in the right class for you. If you are not happy about your placement, I think you can study over the summer and retake them in the fall. Also, after starting, some people are not challenged in their class, and they have been moved to another class, and also the other way around if the class they are in is too much. You don’t want either situation. Don’t stress and just take them. The class you will be placed in is probably where you need to be.

So did anyone who apply to NCSSM also apply to Summer Ventures? I did both and I got into the Summer Ventures program at UNC Charlotte, I want to meet people from there too…

Thank you, Pennylane2011! Your response put me at ease… =)

Man, this thunderstorm is BAAADDDDD…!!!

Tell him I’m Anne’s neighbor and he should know :P

He knows who you are now :stuck_out_tongue: I like your name btw :stuck_out_tongue: It’s very unique.
