Hey guys,
So im currently a freshman in north carolina, and Im planning on applying for NCSSM next year. I just wanted to gauge my chances of actually being accepted. I figure this will be easier for you guys if I just make a sort of resume so here goes:
District- 9
School- South Mecklenburg High School
SAT- 2040
7th Grade: I spent my 7th grade year living in Santiago, Chile. There I had to learn spanish and I learned about the culture. Traveled for a while, and I swam. My relay broke a national record in the 200 IM.
8th Grade: In eighth grade I went to Metrolina regional scholars academy. During that year I took the following high school courses: Biology, English 1, Algebra 2. I had As in my other classes as well as those. As far as extra curricular goes, I swam year round, and went to states and sectionals. I was the captain of my soccer team, and I co-directed the tech crew for our school musical. I also did Future problem solvers, and we placed 5th in the state
9th Grade: This year I took or am taking the following classes: Honors Spanish 4, Honors Precalc, Honors English 2, AP world history, Honors Civilization and Culture 1 (basically another spanish class, Im in the immersion program), PLTW engineering, Honors Geometry, and PE. I have gotten or plan to get As in all of these classes. As far as extracurriculars go, I still swim year round and for south meck (although Ive had a shoulder injury so haven’t been swimming much lately), I do teen court, a program in which we go and volunteer as a jury on teen misdemeanors, so we give out community service hours and the like. Im on a future problem solvers team as well as a curling team, and I like to plan backpacking and hiking trips. This summer, I plan on coaching my summer swim league, working as a lifeguard, and attending one of the ncssm accelerator camps. An exchange student trip to spain is a maybe.
10th grade: The classes I plan to take next year are AB BC calculus, AP environmental, AP language, AP spanish 5, honors chemistry, honors physics, and honors civics and economics. Assume I’ll have an A in these classes. I’ll likely continue my current extracurriculars.
Any advice on how I could improve my plans as well as my chances of getting in would be helpful. I know I live in district 9, so its plenty competitive getting in.
Thanks, Cy
