NCSSM Class of 2015 - Future Applicants

CannedPeaches:
Your SAT score will matter. Where do you stand in that regard?
Also, are you taking the most challenging courses your school offers? If so, than that is good.
Finally, do you have any sports or arts to point out? I am a parent of a child from CD9. Who knows how they pick students but we ‘think’ being well rounded (sports, arts, clubs etc.) helped.
CD9 is full of bright kids from top schools. She has met people from everywhere from Providence High School and Phillip O Berry to private schools in the area like Davidson Day or Charlotte Catholic. The background of the students, academically, is varied. But most of them have one outstanding ‘thing’: Great SAT score or underserved school that could not meet their needs or incredibly well rounded or #1 in their class, etc. It is not the same ‘thing’ for each…but something that made NCSSM be what they need along with showing NCSSM what they can offer. CD9 is pretty tough…but NOT impossible!

Hey, I think i am going to jump into this thread as well.
I will also be applying to ncssm for the class of 2015 but i am in a bit of a different situation. I’m a nc resident applying from CD9 but I currently live in Belgium because of my dads job so all of my ecs, grades, classes, and what-not are a bit different.
Anyway…
I am taking the SAT this weekend so I’m not sure what I will score on it but I think I will retake it in december just in hopes of improving my score.

I was a member of the high honour roll during both of my ninth grade semesters

I know that considering my grades and my small number of extra curriculars, my chances of getting in are slim to none… but the worst thing they can do is say no right? (:

Considering the fact that I go to an I.B. international school, the work is far more demanding so and 85% average would be considered more of a ninety in the united states. One thing that I am really lacking in though are my ecs. Because of the language barrier here (Belgians only speak french) I am limited to the things that my school provides and since there are only 1,200 students pre-k to grade 12, there are few options. At my school we dont have GPA’s or rankings which is really frustrating but I am definitely in the top percent of my grade (even though there are only 74 kids).

I still dont know if coming from a different country would be an advantage (like me being diverse and culturally aware and all) or a disadvantage (like how different my transcript and classes would look from everyone else’s).

tell me what y’all think?

^^ Interesting Stats.

I’m so excited to apply!

How do you think you guys did on the November SAT? :D

I’m realllly not sure hahaha . . . my dad said if I don’t break 2000, I can’t even apply -__-

oh yeah . . . btw . . if it matters to anyone . . . i’m an african american female (:

i think your worldliness lends an advantage to your application . . .

if you make it do so.

It is definitely something that sets your application appart from the rest, so you should connect why your experiences in Belgium make you an excellent NCSSM candidate.

What have you learned? etcc

How does everyone score so high on the SAT. I am going to take mine in December and I do not expect to make that good of a score. (I have taken the SAT in 7th grade)

I only scored a 1960; 690CR 670M 600W
I took the SAT in seventh grade too.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-chances/1397637-chances-ncssm.html#post14890750

That’s my stats, you think I will get in? I’m an all A student at a hard school ranked only three under NCSSM for SAT scores. I’m also in CD10.

1: Schools only look at your percentiles for the SAT. NCSSM however compares you to your own school because each school is different. Someone from a bad school will most likely get a low SAT score. Use your mean as your school’s average and do a normal calculation on that to see where you stand.

I am not sure why I put #1 lol

@StanfordOneDay

I think you will definitely get in

what makes you think that?

bumpp. how did you guys do on SAT November?

Hi, CD4 prospect here, from a crazy competitive school, too. I’m just going to jump in this thread.

To first respond to November SAT: my first try (took ACT for Duke in 7th grade) and I got 2220. I’m taking it again December to bump up the math hopefully from 750 to 800.

Can anyone comment on my chances?

I’m a member of the math team, Beta Club, Science Olympiad, Writer’s Guild, STEM Club, and possibly Science Bowl (find out in a couple of days). I’m part of three service organizations outside of school - one library based, one science based, and one just a community thing. In addition to those, I’m on a science based leadership committee. I have over 70 hours of community service this year alone, and I do a lot of it at the Natural Sciences Museum in Raleigh. I’m also an athlete, varsity on the school team and multi-time state champion (in another state, actually) in the private club version.

Like most of the people here, I got both State and Grand Recognition for Duke TIP back in seventh grade. I tutor kids at school and I’m involved in hands-on teaching at the places I volunteer. PSAT and PLAN scores come soon. I also take Chinese classes and am in the equivalent of Chinese IV, but I have not yet transferred my scores.

What school do you go to? Enloe?

Not Enloe, but I didn’t think what school I go to matters outside of SAT scores.

greenbean97… I would think you would be a competitive candidate. You have good scores, very good grades, service and sports. The problem may be your district…as you noted, District 4 is very, very competitive.
I do think that your sports may help more than you realize. Most kids who apply are academic super starts or close to it. Most have a ton of community service and years of academic clubs. Everyone seems to be in Duke TIP. What else then, do you bring to the table? For some it is being a musician, for others it might be interesting family experiences, for others martial arts…and for some it is being a good team/school athlete. One thing we have picked up on is that NCSSM seems to really value well rounded students.

Good luck!

So how did everyone feel about the December SAT?

taben, thanks, I’ll think on that.

December SAT was harder than November, for sure. I went int hoping for an 800 in math but I think I did worse than last time.

I did not take the November SAT. I just did a one or nothing type of thing. I was also hoping for an 800 in math but I am not sure if I got it…

I am from CD 4 and by a careless mistake I ended up with a 780 instead of an 800 in math. How much of an effect will this have considering that I am applying from a region where tons of people get 800s in math.
