NCSSM Class of 2016- Future Applicants

I was wondering how many people are thinking of applying to NCSSM next year. I believe it is never to early to start thinking about the application process, and becoming acquainted with other possible applicants. If you know you are going to apply to NCSSM next year, or see it as a strong possibility I encourage you to post! You can also say what CD you are from or yours stats if you want.

Past applicants can also post about the school and give tips about the app process, and NCSSM in general!

Go Class of 2016!

The previous thread like this is: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/1359561-ncssm-class-2015-future-applicants.html

Just dicovered this while browsing the forums. This is my first post, mainly because I was just content with reading, but this I wanted to get involved in. I’m planning on applying this year, and I’m from CD 3. I recently made up my mind to apply, and haven’t stopped constantly researching the school yet! Anyways, what CD are you from?

My child is Class of 2015 and has been at the school a month. I’d be glad to answer any questions (or get the answers from my kid). The work load is much higher than the home high school, and my kid is much busier (with various functions, service hours, etc). Despite the workload, my kid seems to really like the school, the kids and her teachers.

I also plan on applying this year, and I live in CD 3. I’ve been really nervous because my parents make it out to be a huge deal and are always talking about how my sister went there. Anyone else taking the October SAT?

Well, I missed the deadline for October, and the price almost doubled. I’m taking Algebra 2 right now. I talked to my teacher who has written tons of recommendations, and she said I should wait til the last date. I figured I’d take it in November, and then again in January if I’m not satisfied. I want at least a 1800. My mom is the same way! I’m trying to keep things quiet, so if I don’t get in, I don’t have to report failure. Parents seem to be a major source of pressure these days!

Hahah, my mom made me sign up for the October one basically the day registration opened because she didn’t want the testing area to be filled up before I registered. I had a terrible experience with Algebra 2 since my teacher just abandoned our class 2 months before standardized tests (this was in 8th grade) and I don’t remember the majority of the graphs, etc. Mmm, yeah, I figured I’d retake if I didn’t do well on the October one. Well best of luck and yes, agreed!

This sounds like a stupid question, but how do you know what district you’re in? I’ve only been in NC for about a year now. Sorry.
I’m also applying, though. And I’m concerned as to what my SAT score should be, is there a range?

oops, sorry. I found out that I am cd 18. is it hard to get int NCSSM from there? What is the average SAT score?

My stats: (projected gpa)
~ 3.8 uw gpa
~ 4.97 weighted gpa
I am taking 5 AP classes during sophmore year, and two honors classes. ( am getting a B in honors pre-calculus (one semester) and another B in AP United States History )
My course load was weak during freshen year, and I took 3 honors classes and 2 on-level (chinese 1 and civics). One AP was offered at my school during freshen year, but since I was new, I wasn’t allowed to take it. Also, there was no honors civics. I have moved lots of times, so my situation is different. But I did manage to get all A’s.

I have a few small group math awards and I did mock trial, and my team got 2nd place in state (although I was not a varsity member ).
Clubs during freshmen year: math team, science olympiad, mock trial, key club (service club),
During sophmore year, I plan to join these clubs: HOSA, Speech and Debate, MUN, Science Olympiad, and Key Club

Here is a link the congressional district map from UNC-Ch.

https://research.unc.edu/offices/federal-affairs/resources/nc-congressional-districts/

There are 13 districts.

Thank you! Gosh, I feel so stupid. >.< I’m in the 6th district. Do you know how competitive that is, though?

Hi Guys!
I am from CD 11. I am going to apply, hopefully we will be seeing each other! I want to be a neurosurgeon, and I just wanted to know what you guys wanna do? What classes are you guys taking this sophmore year? How are your grades?

Well, I’ve already posted my stats. But to be honest, I’m really not sure what I want to be. My parents are pushing me into becoming a doctor, but I’m not that much of a fan. Maybe something in economics or business, but I’m still undecided.

idk my stats are uh
4.0 unweighted and 4.75 weighted gpa (freshman year)
i’m currently taking
honors chem
honors spanish 3
ap psych
ap calc ab
honors civics + economics
honors spanish 4
honors english 2
ap calc bc

but i might take ap stats instead of spanish 4, not sure.
I’m on the swim team and in mock trial, debate, math honor society, science club, health sciences academy, anchor club (service club), sga, dream team (another service club), link crew, and maybe science olympiad if I have time.

I’m pretty sure my CD isn’t that competitive, though, and my sister’s taking me to NCSSM to meet the counselor when she gets back from college (she went there, and apparently the counselor’s on the admissions board).

The most competitive districts are the raleigh/durham/triangle area and then charlotte, I think.

I’m jealous! My school is a stickler for giving Sophomores AP classes. :frowning:
Anyways, My Stats:
GPA- W:4.35 UW:3.8
Current Classes-
Honors Chemistry
French 1
Honors Algebra 2
Honors English 2
Next Semester-
Honors Civics
French 2
Honors Physics
Honors Precal
My school wouldn’t let freshmen double up on 2 core classes, and I moved and lost my recommendations, so I was put in Earth Sci. I had a horrible teacher, and made a B. I did make a hundred on that exam though. I made a 91 in honors geometry, but Made like a 97 on the exam. I also had a final average of a 99 in Honors Biology. I’m currently in the school play, Othello, and competing in quiz bowl. I also do a lot of volunteer work around town. My district, CD3, isn’t too competitive, maybe like a 1 in 4 chance or something like that. And I wish I got a chance to visit there before discovery day! And you’re right about those being the most competitive areas. Their odds are like 1 in 25 or something crazy! Oh, and when I grow up, I want to be a college biochemistry professor, or a chemical engineer.

awh that sucks about the moving and stuff. My school actually lets some freshmen take AP classes, which is crazy. There’s this one kid who skipped 2 grades and he’s taking AP Calc AB and AP Physics. The school play sounds really interesting! I had my mind made up in 3rd grade that I was going to star in all the school plays and be an actress when I grow up but I’ve realized the stage isn’t really my forte.

I have a friend (who’s a junior now) and she took 4 or 5 AP’s sophomore year, got a 2280 her first time taking the SATs, and did a ton of clubs. She applied to NCSSM and she lives in the apex area and she was so worried about getting in. I think she finally did, though? Can’t be sure.

So many people already have in mind what they want to do in the future! I don’t have a clue what I want to do, though

I thought I’d share my experience from two years ago.

I got into NCSSM for class of 2014 back in '12. I put absolutely zero effort into my essays/statements and honestly didn’t even want to go. Heck, I started my application about 1 week before the deadline. I had to request an extension just to finish my application.

I ended up getting a below-average SAT score (just below the mid 50% - 1900-2100), and had no extracurriculars other than volunteering at the library for a few months.

My class rank at the time was #2, and I live in CD13. #1 in my school was also applying. He had a crap ton of volunteer hours and awards, and lived in CD4.

Mind you, I didn’t have any APs - my school doesn’t offer them.

Discovery day comes along, I end up bombing the test that they give us, and I don’t give another thought about it. I wasn’t going to get in.

I was wrong. I got into Residential. #1 didn’t, he got into online. He refuses to say whether he accepted it or not, but its a safe bet to say yes.

Remember, you can do EVERYTHING wrong and still get in. This isn’t make-or-break, this isn’t that big of a deal. Its a good school, no doubt, but it isn’t a perfect school.

I ended up declining admission, so I can’t say anything about what the school is really like now.

Aww . . . this was us last year . . .

Does anybody have any specific questions? Instead of just posting a list of stats?

I’m applying this year (:
