NCSSM Class of 2016- Future Applicants

at Ace
Hey there buddy! So far, I don’t see anything that you’re outrageously good at; seems quite…average. Maybe you should try participating in an olympiad of some sort. I hold the title as NC’s best freshman chemist (or at least I DID), and took the subject test in 9th grade too. Got a few coo clubs and…not much else. I’ll prolly score a 2240 on the SAT. I don’t feel as if I have too much of an advantage though because of my 2 Bs and the fact that my current math teacher wants to murder me.
Most clubs are just for fun…I don’t think NCSSM would honestly care about something that has no real competition or potential for success in (for example, chess club…***, I may be great at it but…no one cares!)
Btw, where’s your PE class?!

And JUST sayin’. Kill your test anxiety. It’ll help you; especially on that Discovery Day test.

P.S. Logically, if you could write a great novel, I’m almost 100% sure that NCSSM would nearly 100% accept you. That’s what I’m doin’ (while also advancing my SAT and international chemoly skills)! WORLD BEHOLD. The great weasel of persuasion has arrived!
CD 4! And if Jade Wu, Erik Salgado, or Suhas “Indian name” is reading this, good luck! Bwahaha just kidding noobs.

Hey Flaracos
I like your advice to write a novel haha but why would that almost guarantee your acceptance?
And do you have any other great ideas to help people “stand out”

Just got my SAT scores back today! (800 CR, 730 Math, 740 Writing) I’m feeling fairly confident about it… or at least I know it won’t be the thing holding me back from getting in NCSSM.

Do you guys have any tips for essay writing? Gaahh, I can’t write under pressure.

I’m actually still a bit undecided about NCSSM. Could someone give me the work load estimate - around what time I’d sleep, LOL. Also, what’s a typical day like? Oh, and does it give you an advantage if you have a sibling there? Thanks!

Congrats everyone! I think the main thing is not stressing out about this. Chancing certainly will not help you - and admissions is completely unpredictable. It’s also not the end of the world if you don’t get in - I know tons of sucessful people who didn’t get in and unsuccessful people that did. I really should take my own advice, but I hope we can all get in and become besties, hehe. ^^

I’m sorry. I have a lot to say, haha, but would you recommend NCSSM if you are more of a liberal arts person? I know their focus is math and science, but I know they have lots of english classes too.

Wait were you talking to someone or did you just post 3 consecutive posts (not trying to be rude)?

I guess your sleep depends on how you manage your time, what classes you take, and your ECs, but my sister never had enough sleep when she went there haha.
Also, to the liberal arts question, I would think so! As long as you don’t suck at math or science, I guess.

Applications open tomorrow!

ugh don’t remind me.
applications make me feel so unaccomplished.

@foreignlawyer - I bet you look “accomplished”

@loltired
I need 15 posts to PM people, so I just decided to spam this. Sorry if that bothers you.

OH haha, no it doesn’t, I was just wondering.

Are you guys applying to both online and residential?
I’m really too lazy to type up 10 responses to the online questions.

How are the applications going?

I’m a parent of Class of 2015, and I would be glad to answer questions about our experience for those applying (or their parents) to Class of 2016.

@Skrunch - I come from a small school and highest college that a student has been accepted to is UNC. The reason I want to attend NCSSM is to be able to higher my chances for Duke. But, I was wondering if all the hard work is worth it. I read a thread about a student’s experience at NCSSM and it is making me indecisive. Here is the article:

@Current Applicants - How are you filling out the EC section? Are you just listing it or what?

i havent filled out that section yet, partly because im lazy, but the admissions guy at ncssm said just to list stuff

I’m a current junior at NCSSM. You can look at some of my earlier posts to get to know me better. Anyways, if you aspire to attend Duke University, you should know that the acceptance rate for NCSSM students is 27-30%, compared to the 11-13% national rate.

Also a NCSSM junior here, any questions feel free to message me as well. I didn’t have stellar test scores or take the hardest classes at my old school either. I know the admissions ladies very personally, so I can give you tips on what helps you stand out in your application! Since they’re already out now and it’s crunch time!

do you know how hard it is to apply from each CD?
I’m from CD 3.
Also, do they have a quota from each school, or just each district.

Oh my gosh I’m a freshman right now and reading everyone else’s classes that they’re taking right now is really disheartening. I’m currently taking Honors English I, Honors Earth Science, Honors Math 2, Honors Civics and Economics, Career Management, and Biomedical Technology. Next semester Career Management and Biomedical Technology will be replaced by PE and Concert Band. What would you guys suggest doing to improve my chances of getting accepted? I think I’m in District 11 (Asheville), do they base acceptance on Districts?
