Hello everyone,

I am a rising freshman for high school (8th grader) and I’ve been interested in attending NCSSM ever since 2007 after seeing a school bus owned by the school and my parents informing me about the school. Silly, I know. I feel like it’s a bit too soon to worry about such and such but I just want to get ready for what’s coming. I’ve been wanting to go to this school for such A LONG time and I don’t want to fail in achieving my goal, failure is what I fear the most. But, when I look through several forums, etc. about NCSSM, I feel like I’m not good enough and that I need more extracurricular activities but I don’t want to push myself way too hard. So, here’s what I’ve got so far:

I’m a straight A student.

I am currently taking Geometry in the 8th Grade, meaning Algebra 2 next year, probably honors.

The only extracurricular activities I’ve done since the 7th grade (that’s what the counselor said that counts) is Taekwondo, I am a first degree black belt, and won several 1st place awards and one 2nd place in tournaments. I also teach others as a black belt. I’m currently doing a program called WAM (Women and Math), I run track, I tutor in my school, I am part of the National Honor Junior Society, I play the viola, and is part of the youth group in my church in which I volunteer occasionally.

I am planning on volunteering over the summer.

As for the SAT, I haven’t taken it yet but I’m preparing with the Duke SAT Prep since I want to take it during freshman year to see what it is like.

I have already been accepted to CMA (City of Medicine Academy) for highschool.

My weaknesses:

I’m not very good in Language Arts. Though, I’m better than regular students.

My vocabulary is pretty low.

I’m not so sure about my writing.

So, my question is: How can I improve myself and what should I do to make myself look better?

If you feel like it’s a bit too early to prepare myself, then state so :stuck_out_tongue:
Oh, and I like in the Triangle Area in Durham.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know how difficult CD2 is? And does the application have a place to show what you will be doing 2nd semester of your 10th grade year?

Your transcript will show both semester classes, but it will only show the grades from the first semester. I will be applying next year from CD6. Do you know how competitive that is? Also, please answer my question at:

How do my chances look?

What are you going to take sophomore year? Or at least what do you plan on taking? Also, what congressional district are you from? That is an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT part of your chances!

I’m from CD 1, and I plan on taking;
Honors Biology
Honors Algebra 2
Honors English 2
Honors Civics and Economics
Spanish 2
CTE 1 & 2
and Computer Programming! Also, I hope to take a class over the summer, any recommendations?

CD1 is a tough district. Well I do think you would have a chance considering you have a lot of extracurricular activities. I am from CD6 which is less competitive. Here are my activities/classes:

I am currently a 9th grader and I’m going to apply next year. My current activities are: HOSA Club, Latin Club, and History Club. I also “observed” our science bowl team and I will probably compete next year. I will start participating in World Cultures Club, Key Club, be a competitor in Science Bowl, and Environmental Club. I will also do the clubs I did in my 9th grade year. I will volunteer in the hospital during summer time and will probably get well over a hundred hours. Also I volunteered in my 8th grade year by tutoring students. I hope to do this in my 10th grade year except tutor an entire class after school. This will complete 50 hours of community service that key club requires. I would say one of the greatest accomplishments I have had is getting strait As through middle school. Also I hope to start a math club. Also, I have played 7 years of recreational basketball and 3 years of recreational soccer. I have gone to church camps during the summer time for 7 years. I played one year of basic tennis and can thoroughly play the tabla drums. I was accepted to be a part of Duke Tip. I was also admitted into the National Youth Leadership Forum. I was also the 7th and 8th grade science person of the year award. I have also gotten an award by reaching my reading counts goal in 7th and 8th grade. I have also completed 5 levels of recreational swimming courses. I have entered my school science fair 3 times. I have an award in 7th grade for creating and directing the best math skit and got an award for the best use of technology for this skit. I have gotten a Minority Academic Award for 3rd to 8th grade. I have been a part of Academically Intellectually Gifted Students from 3rd to 8th grade.

My classes/grades are (93-100 is an A; 85-92 is a B):
9th Grade Classes:
Geometry Honors-A
Biology Honors-B (92)
PE/Health-A
English I Honors-B (92)
World History Honors-A (currently)
Latin I-A (currently)
Algebra II Honors- A (currently)
Biomedical Technology- A (currently)

10th Grade Classes:
AP Statistics
Pre-Calculus Honors
Civics & Economics Honors
English II Honors
Biology II Honors
Latin II
AP Biology
Chemistry Honors

To laurenjeffries, I realized looking at your stats your science and math class grades were your lowest, I suggest next year really really strive your hardest in those two classes because those i believe are the main ones they look at. But either way your grades look fantastic and you have like a million EC’s, so just keep it up! And because you writing grade is so high it will probably come in handy when writing the essay for the application and at discovery day. And does any one know if there are available places in johnston county to take classes during the summer?

Actually, I have never gotten anything below an A in math in my life. Also, I got a 92 in biology. I hope to redeem myself by making an A in AP Biology.

Yeah, I also realize that my math and science grades were not the best, but I am hoping that next year will be much much better! Plus I am thinking of taking Honors Psychology online over the summer, and I am sure I can make a high grade on that. Thank you!

@laurenjeffries You never gave me my chances:( Can you please answer it? :)

@yerhs52, I would say based off of your grades an EC’s, you have a great chance. Just study hard for the SAT, maybe get a tutor, and try your best to score high on that and I say you have a really good chance of getting in.

The SAT is my number one weakness. Lol. I hope that they don’t look at it too much.
