I am from district 6. I would not worry about it too much as they look at the score for your admissions test as well.

Yes, I’ve heard that the SAT is just one of the many factors that they considered so it shouldn’t be a problem…but I also know that NCSSM compares your SAT score to your school’s average. The mean SAT score for the Class of 2012 of my school was 2080 and somebody said that you should aim to be 100+ points above the school average…and I doubt that my school’s average is lower than 2080 since everybody is really smart…

Do you think it would be worth it to retake the SAT in January?

@hsstudent86
You can most likely find your school’s average. If it’s a public/charter school, the state has public records. If it’s a private school with kids that smart, they’ll want to boast. Who wouldn’t?
If it’s private, then search your school name and SAT or hit up the Wikipedia page(if there is one) or go to the website and look for “statistics” or “facts at a glance”.
The Wikipedia page should work for a public school, too, but a Google search could also provide you with the information you need

Also, I hear through the internet grapevine, in all of its reliability(insert sarcasm), that they just look at the CR+M, but it won’t hurt to think of a full-circle approach. Y’know, just in case the internet is misinformed. It wouldn’t be the first time

What school do you even go to? I am pretty sure the highest SAT score average in NC is early college at guilford or NCSSM. I am pretty sure I am in district 6 and there are no schools near me with that high of an SAT average. Check on NC Public Schools.

NCSSM has the highest average SAT score for a public school, I just skimmed through all the scores for all the public schools in the state. I was only looking at M+CR, but NCSSM was highest by a significant amount (~100 points?)

@yerhs52
Haha I don’t really want to say where I go to school exactly with this being the internet and all, but I checked NC Public Schools and I am a little more than 100 points lower than my school’s combined M+CR+W score. But my personal SAT score higher than my school’s M+CR average.

So which score does NCSSM look at exactly? Just the M+CR or the score of all 3 sections?

I wouldn’t really stress about SATs. I don’t know what sections they look at. I would assume all of them.

Well, stress a little bit. They’re important, but not the be-all and end-all. There are also your teacher recommendations, the math test on discovery day, the essays you send with your application, and your transcript. It’s one piece in a big, important puzzle. I wouldn’t suggest skipping that piece, but don’t over think it either

Back in 2006, they only looked at M+CR, if that’s of interest

Hi Guys, I am in the middle of the NCSSM App and now Im just wondering what my chances are.

Please let me know what you think about my chances
THANK YOU

majikarp…your information looks good, but as you are coming from the most competitive district that makes it harder to be sure.
Do you have any sports or arts interests or skills? They are certainly not required, but it does help to show you are very well rounded and could help boost you against an equally qualified candidate from your district.
Also, are you applying solely for residential placement or also online?
T

Sophomore classes?

taben1112
I havent been involved in sports in high school. I am applying for both online and residential.

@majikarp
I’m also CD4, and you’re making me a little nervous
I think you look great, especially founding the Leo club and your school-based awards. You counter your scholastic focus with your award for community service. So, I haven’t even submitted my application yet, but I think you’re looking good!
Good luck!

For the Awards, Certificates, Projects and Recognitions, Extra Curricular, Hobbies, etc. sections, do you just list?

I listed extracurriculars, but I wrote the awards section and hobbies section in paragraph.

I listed for most of the first 5 and did paragraphs for the last 5.

Hey everyone… I’m also an applicant here from CD 10. My current GPA is 4.75 unweighted and 4.0 weighted (Class Rank 1). By the end of my sophomore year, I expect a GPA of 4.8 with all A’s in Geometry HN, Algebra II HN, Pre-Calculus HN, Earth/Environmental Science HN, and Biology HN. My SAT scores are CR 470 M 710 W 480 with an overall of 1660. Yes, I know my critical reading and writing scores are not the best, but I do speak another language as well… What do you guys think?

@kuamhaam
Well, the first two things that jump out for me are your very impressive 4.0 unweighted GPA(I believe that’s what you meant), and your 470CR & 430 W SAR score.
Your GPA is very impressive, and they focus on that a whole lot more than they focus on the SAT score, but, as you know, the SAT score could use a little work. Talk about your other language in the Adversity essay to explain your low score, and, with a proficiency in an area of extracurriculars(whether it’s service or the arts or sports or… I’m sure there are more), I’m sure you’ll do great. That over 700 score in Math on the SAT is also going to look really good, if not just to NCSSM, if you chose to re-use in in applying to college.
