Hello! I am a rising sophomore in high school, and plan on applying to NCSSM this Fall. NCSSM is a selective boarding school in Durham, North Carolina. Whoever reads this, could you please evaluate my chances of getting in?

Freshman Year Classes:

H English 1 - A all year, A on final
H Biology - A all year, A on final
H World History - A all year, A on final
H Geometry - B 3 quarters, A one quarter, A on final
H Orchestra - A all year, A on final
PE - B 3 quarters, A one quarter, A on final

I never had below a 4.5 weighted GPA throughout freshman year.

For sophomore year, I am planning on taking H Civics, H Alg2, H Chem, H Eng10, H Orch, and AP Biology. I will be taking German 1 online through NCVPS.

For ECs, I have played viola since 4th grade. I have made the western regional all-state orchestra since 6th grade, and the all-county orchestra since 7th grade. I have made 1st chair in all-county twice. I have attended summer music camp since 6th grade. I volunteer every week at my local science center, and will begin to help out at the animal shelter starting this fall. I will be joining the Beta Club and Habitat for Humanity clubs at my school next school year, too.

I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I got a 144 on the PSAT. ( I know it's low)
I live in Congressional District 6.

Thank you!! (:

I think that you have a very good GPA, but I can’t really determine your chances without your SAT score. Also, I think your viola experience is impressive, but do you have anything else to impress the admissions committee? Have you done any sports teams, academic teams, lots of community service hours, etc? You want to have something that will pop out as unique to the admission committee. Next school year, try to become involved in things that will pop out, like student council, science olympiad (if you have it), stuff like that.

Well, either way, good luck.

I agree with what markalex1 said. We can’t really fully evaluate your chances without you taking the SAT. Study for it over the summer and score as high as you can in the fall. Congressional District 6 isn’t as competitive as some other districts, so that may also help you. Best of luck!

This is very true

@ markalex1: I have probably logged at least 50 hours of volunteer work at the science center, which you think would pop out, since it is a SCIENCE center. I will consider getting involved with my student council. My school as of last year does not offer a Science Olympiad team. Also, the community orchestra I am a part of went on a trip to Austria/Germany over spring break, I could add that, as that seems to be something that would definitely make me stand out from the rest of the applicants.

-Beethank, I think that your orchestra trip to Austria/Germany will definetely pop out as unique. Anyways, just make sure to get a good SAT score, some good ECs for next year, and some ultra good essays for your application.

Good luck to you,
Mark

What’s up with everyone on CC playing the viola???!!!
Good Stats. Good Stuff. Good Luck.
