AP Courses: Enviornmental Science, Calculus AB, English Lang., Stats, Computer Science
Additional: I am taking dual enrollment courses this year. I gidn’t get credit for Calc AB so I took Calculus I at my local community college, and am currently taking Spanish I. I’m the CFO of my school’s Virtual Enterprise firm - this is a program where students create their own company and work in an office environment to sell products at trade shows with other Virtual Enterprise firms and on the company website. Member of Beta Club since sophomore year, Treasurer/Parliamentarian of my school’s FBLA chapter, and a member of National Technical Honors Society. I have participated in a few notable community service projects, but nothing beyond maybe 50 hours altogether. I am also a first generation student, which most likely helped. I work a part-time job at a local restaurant, usually around 15 hours a week. I was apart of Link Crew at my school this past summer, where I prepared team-building activities and led a campus tour for incoming freshmen during their orientation. Good recommendations from Stats and Environmental Science teachers, along with my counselor. Essays were very solid and personal - topics were my first generation status, overcoming my pessimistic attitude through volunteering, and the benefits of diversity in the classroom.
Wondering if everyone above applied by October 15 or did you apply Regular Decision?
I think it is extremely unfair that oos of students were accepted with lesser scores than my in state student who was deferred. His stats are much higher, but missed a spot that was given to an oos.

@college@2018: In regards to your complaint about OOS students who had “lesser” statistics than your IS child who was deferred, a couple of observations. First, a deferral is not a denial; your child may still be accepted, so no OOS applicant is actually taking a space from your student. Second, if you look at the NCSU Common Data Set, here, https://oirp.ncsu.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/CDS_2016-2017.v10.pdf , you will see in Part C7 that it’s not just test scores and GPA that are factors in the admission decision; but also rigor of the high school academics, plus many non-academic factors that are “considered.” The combination of the academic rigor of your child’s high school, plus review by the admissions office of the other factors in Part C7 that are “considered,” may have been what resulted in deferral for your child.
Your child still has a chance for admission, so don’t give up hope yet.
My in state white male son, had a 35 ACT. (Not superscored), 1500 SAT (770 math, 730 English) a 3.5 uw GPA and a 4.6 w. GPA. Was deferred. He took the hardest classes his public high school (A good one) had in Charlotte. I think he has at least 11 AP classes. He got into engineering at South Carolina with in state tuition and the honors college. He has another scholarship coming. He got into engineering at UGA with half off in state. He also got into engineering at Alabama with a $27,500 a year scholarship. I think this is social engineering at its worst. He has female classmates getting in with lower scores.
