NCTE achievement award

So i got nominated from my school to enter the ncte achievement award and in the minute event that i win a national medal for the competition, how impressive is that to adcoms?

how prestitigious is the competition..because im terrible at math/science so im trying to win writing/english awards..

thanks!

I was nominated too last year. It's a pretty prestigious thing, i mean only about 500 kids win every year. someone analogized to an easier version of Siemens or Intel. So, definitely note that on your app if you win.

Good Luck!

thanks! what exactly does the 2 hour essay entail? what will i be asked to do

also, can i pick a poem and a prose

and is it judged at state level then national level?

i did this last year -- the two hour essay for me was either write a story containing X words/characters or write an essay discussing (i forget exactly) but i think the role of the media in the current (past) election.
Then you have to submit some of your original writing and I'm pretty positive that you can submit poetry, prose, whatever you want really (as far as I understood it, although I submitted one newspaper article + 3 essays).

Hope this helps!

did u win? like im trying to figure out how difficult/competitive it is at the state and national level

I was a national winner this year--I was the only one from my school, though, and the year before we didn't have one.

It's definitely a nice award to have--I received a letter from one of my top choices congratulating me on it, and I guess we'll see how that pans out in two months or so. I don't know how much it really means to be nominated, though.

thats really awesome that they sent you a letter about that...good luck! :)

by the way, how many writing pieces did you submit
because according to ticktock you can send in as much as you like
what did u do?

I submitted four: one very short short story, two prose poems, and the essay that was used for the qualifying round at my school. It all came out to about seven pages, and I think the two other semifinalists that didn't win submitted ten pages, so don't feel compelled to submit the max amount if you fall under!

I ended up getting the NCTE Award. I submitted about 5 pages of general writing, in addition to the impromptu essay. It shows you're a legit writer, it means you're one of the best in the school and then one of the best in that already pre-selected pool.

Bananafish9, what top college congratulated you? If you want, you can PM me, but obviously you don't have to either way, I am just a random curious fellow 09er.

It probably can help if you win and are actually marketing your skills in English and writing to colleges actively.

I dunno, I was definitely one of the stronger writers at my school, and was nominated. Didn't win anything, and definitely it didn't seem to help me...but that's probably because I am a math major at heart and didn't really market my writing skills + that I didn't actually win the competition.
