NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing 2009

Any other juniors entering this? I completed the impromptu writing last week; now all I have to do is to compile a sample of my best writing. :)

Yay, I won an NCTE award last year! Congrats on being nominated and good luck :)

Thanks! I have a question, though: For the best writing, should I submit one piece of writing <10 pages, or multiple pieces of writing totaling around 10 pages? The NCTE site seems vague about this, and my teacher doesn’t know.

I’m bumping this as the deadline approaches. Anyone?

What is it? I like writing and am relatively good at it.

[Achievement Awards](http://www.ncte.org/awards/student/aa)

It is a program that recognizes high school juniors for their writing. Each year, high school English departments nominate junior students for the program. The students then complete an impromptu essay and compile a sample of their best writing. Unfortunately, if you are a junior, the deadline for nomination has passed.

The impromptu short story I wrote for this contest last year turned into a 95,000 word novel I finished in November.

Good times.

Wow. I miss all the good opportunities. lol Thanks.

damn, you have to be nominated

I was recently nominated as well. Just wondering what were the options for the impromptu writing?

:) Not telling. Sorry. The essay is supposed to be impromptu, so telling you would be unfair.

Look at the essay topics for previous years if you want practice. They’re… interesting to say the least.

i got nominated last year and submitted stuff but didn’t get it

hope this helps

I’ll have to let my English teacher know about this for next year ;)

Ahaha, thanks, Poseur. That’s reassuring. Congrats on Brown anyway!

Okay, thanks. I’ll look into those.
Just hoping that the topics won’t be too obscure.

^Personally, I disliked the topics. Brace yourself.

I’m a rising junior and considering doing this next year. Does the writing sample have to be a work of fiction/a story, or can it be a research paper or nonfiction essay?

I don’t think they take research papers. A non-fiction essay might be okay, depending on the subject. Check the guidelines.
