I was recently selected as a winner of the NCTE Achievement Award in Writing. It seems like this organization gives out many awards.. should I even bother including the winner's card in my applications?

It may seem as if they give out a lot of awards, but that's not really true if you consider most schools at least nominate the student they consider to be their strongest writer--it's the best of the best. It's definitely considered to be a prestigious award. The cards are a little weird--include them if you have no other way of making the award known, but my D just put it on her list of awards and honors.

chaotic:

Congratulations! I believe the award is very prestigious, but I've never asked an admissions officer if this is the case. But it's hard to believe that it's not prestigious.

First off, you have to be nominated by your school, and there are very few nominations even at very large high schools. Then, you have to compete with the other nominees. In the end, there are an average of 12 or so winners per state. That's not very many.

I wouldn't bother with the card, personally. It seems a little much.

chaotic, when did you find out? my school said that results wouldn't be released until late october.

oh, wait! awesome! i won too!
the website has it...my teachers haven't told me yet though...weird
